1. OK I took the plate off and all the wires were still intact. i gave them a wiggle and also this green thing which I am assuming is the capacitor. The tone seemed to work a little after that. So its either this green thing which is soldered to the pot or one of the wires.
2. Yes its passive. So its something I can't fix myself then?? What would need replacing. Just the capacitor or more than that? Sorry not really electrically minded.
3. I have a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless and it seems my tone control is doing nothing at all. Turn it full one way and and full the other and no difference in the tone at all. What would be the cause of this?? Easy fix or would something need replacing?? Thanks for any help.
4. Hey Maxcat, can you post a couple more pictures of the stand, especially how it sits near the bottom of the stand. I can't see if you have the end pin extended or not. Thanks
5.
I love reading these threads- every time I end up having to say the same thing. Not bad that it wasn't until the 5th reply that we got the compliment with the mandatory "but.." attached to it. And not bad to have only 2 criticisms on 1 page. "he's not bad.." ???!!! "he's kinda sloppy.."??!! "There's no groove.."??!! "play stuff slower and grow up..??!! Come on- he's 15 and very good for his age. When he's 35 he may be a monster or conversely he may not groove at all. But at least at 15 he was way, way, way ahead of me and many others at 15. He's on track. Let's see some love for the young 'uns
Well I am more than happy to say I think he/she is an amazing player.
6.
Hi Rainbass. It is indeed the Lion Brewery every Thursday night. We host every 5th week and our next one is 5th June. I dont tend to bring the Stagg to the jams unless we are hosting cos it probably wont get used. Saying that we could defo sort something out in advance if you fancy a tinkle. The first proper outing for the beast is next Saturday 24th at the Crown and Cushion Haslemere with my band Six Miles Away if youre around. Look forward to meeting you.
Bugger. If I wasn't in Kent that weekend, I would come down and see you play. I might try and make the Lion Brewery on the 5th if you have the Stagg with you.
7. Thats excellent. I will pass this info on. Thanks for the help.
8. OK, thank you for your help.
9. I was looking at getting a metronome to use as practise to play along to as I learn to play double bass. I have been doing this with my teacher and it has been a good thing. Then, I downloaded some of the loops that Ped had posted and they gave me some inspiration to make some bass lines up to play on my fretless. So I then got thinking that it would be cool to get a drum machine so I then can chuck out some random drum beats so I can play along to. I seem to be able to make up bass lines up on the hop from just hearing drums playing. The sort of thing I would be after is jazz beats, hip hop, slow groove type stuff. Certainly not rock, metal or funk. So, is a drum machine the right sort of thing I am looking for? Ideally, I don't want to get bogged down with programming my own beats so lots of pre-sets would be great. I don't wanted to be to limited with only 5 or so pre-sets. Also, any recommended drum machines if this is the right sort of direction to head in? The Zoom SB223 Street box Drum machine looks pretty cool. Any help would be really appreciated.
10. Thats either Mark King's love child or programmable robotic children are now available. Either way, one of my theory's is right and I claim my £5.
11.
It means vibrato.
Is that serious??
12. Hi, Somebody sent me an email asking me what this symbol ~ mean when reading TAB. Not being a TAB reader, I have no idea. I have searched the internet and found some great explanations on reading TAB but none of them explain what the ~ symbol means. Does anyone know what it means?? Thanks for any help.
13. Yeah Stingrays are more like £650 - £750. SUB's are more like £350.
14.
Thanks for all your replies, I appreciate your input!! I think I might have tracked an elusive Stagg down, been doing a bit of deer stalking I'm not going to say where but the price is £349, (which I can't really afford at the moment!!), and I was wondering if this was a good price?? Oh and it's a violin burst one too!!!
£349 I think is about £100 over priced. However. Supply is short so you may have to wait a little to get it for about £250 http://www.zingsmusic.com/product_info.php?products_id=5176 http://www.normans.co.uk/Items/Item.aspx?SKU=edb-3/4mbk I think you can buy them at other places also.
15. Does anyone have any pictures of the early Warwick Streamers that came out I think aound 1987. They had Ying and Yang fret markers. Loved that bass and not seen any around or pictures for years.
16. I can't believe this has not been sold at this price. Amazing basses these are. My wife has one and loves it.
17.
I've had a Squier VMJ & they're a great bass, but the pickups are a little weak. (Don't forget that I tend to compare every bass output-wise to a biblical Status preamp!) Same with many passive Fenders/Squiers, you'll have seen a lot of owners on this server swapping out pickups & adding preamps, etc. On the plus side of this point, I played Terry K's Fender Geddy Lee which has an Audere Pre & pickups the other week. What a great sounding bass! I played an OLP MM22 (the active twin humbucker one) several times at a friend's shop & that was biblical. Best sounding bass in the shop! (And one of the cheapest.) I had a pupil who had one of the MM Subs. It was a great bass to play, great sounding preamp & a very fast neck. I know which was I'd go, but as usual in these things, I'd find a good example of each & try them for yourself if you can.
Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.
18.
i personally cant get along with stingray style basses, i just dont like where the pickups are situated, to far back for my liking, i bought one last year when i first started learning and at first it was ok but i soon got p**sed off with it, i still have it but it doesnt get used anymore, i much prefer precision style basses. i would personally go with the modified jazz as i nearly bought one a few weeks ago but ended up with a mex precision. Its up to you really, just go with what feels right for you, try something different, you never know you might like it.
Is that because you play with a pick. When I owned a Stingray (why did I sell it gggrrr) back in 2000 I think when i played with a pick, the pickup used to get in the way. Playing with fingers was great as you could rest your thumb between the two bumps on the top of the pickup. The Squire is top of my list as I love Jazz basses.
19. Having decided to not need a bass and selling my old Fender, I have now decided I am going to need one as I am going to retire my trusty 20 year old ESP. I really want a 2 eq Musicman Stingray but funds really will not stretch that far. So, rather than waste to much money on something good, I want to get something that will just keep me going, do a good solid job, sound half decent, play well, not fall apart and keep me going until I get my Musicman. I may pass it onto my son when he's a bit older and may be interested in playing. So the short list is, Squire Vintage Modified Jazz - £215 OLP Musicman Copy - £199 Musicman SUB - £300 - £350 secondhand I have a Squire Vintage Jazz Fretless and its superb and I love the look of the Vintage Jazz model. I have heard the OLP Musicman copy is pretty good but really not sure if its better or worse than the Squire. The Musicman SUB is a bit of a long shot as they are hard to find. Also, not sure if I want to spend that much and if I should just hold out until I can get the Stingray. They are also slab bodies which is a worry. Any kind of opinions would be most helpfull.
20.
Here goes. Hope I get it right... Stingray 4 Available with 2 or 3 band Eq. No coil switching. Stingray 5 All have 3 band Eq. Coil switching for series, parallel and single coil operation. Sterling Dinkier body than the 'Ray 4. 3 Band Eq. controls are mounted from rear, not on the scratchplate (as Ray5) or control plate (as Ray 4) 3 band Eq. Coil switching as per Ray 5 S.U.B. "Sports utility bass" As previously mentioned, a cut-price variant, disguising cheaper cuts of wood with solid finishes. Painted finish on necks. Same hardware as more expensive models, so the potential's there. All 2 band Eq (IIRC) No coil switching, which some prefer. Cutlass Not currently produced. Simply a Stingray 4 with a Graphite Neck. May crop up second hand Sabre Old-school 2 pick-up variant of Ray 4 (HH/HH) Quite rare. No longer in production Newer additions Most Stingray models now available with other pick-up configurations to rival the Bongo (but not the 4 band Eq!) Piezo Bridges also an option. General notes Bodies mainly from Ash (trans finishes) Alder or Poplar (solid finishes) Status make Graphite necks of you want your own "home-brew" Cutlass. (which isn't a million miles from a Modulus Flea sig when all's said and done!) The General consensus is that the 2-Band eq Ray 4 epitomises the "Stingray Sound". The 3 Band isn't quite the same. I've liked all the Sterlings I've played. They feel more manoeuverable due to their reduced bulk. I own a 1990 Poplar bodied Fretless 5 (unlined). It's a super instrument.
Its quit interesting that you say the 2-Band eq Ray 4 epitomises the "Stingray Sound". The 3 Band isn't quite the same. I had a 3 band eq Stingray and I was never happy with the sound. It seemed to thin and twangy for me. I wanted something with some drive and balls and it never gave me it. It had a superb sound and the nicest bass I played but the sound was to weak. I wonder if the 2 band eq would had been fatter.
21.
I used to own a Dean Pace which I enjoyed playing fingerstyle but it isn't designed to be bowed as others pointed. I currently have an NS Design CR5M. If your funds can stretch to an NS-Design Bass Cello. Don't let the word cello put you off - it is a bass. It has the same scale as a Bass guitar (like the Pace) but can be bowed and can be played upright on a stand or horizontally on a strap.
Is the NS-Design Bass Cello tuned the same as a bass, E, A, D and G???
22.
Hi Wooks. I would say that whilst its not impossible to lay it over your lap, the sheer size, balance point ,neck dimensions along with the scale length (approx 44 inches) would prevent you doing much . You can however play it seated on a bar stool or kitchen stool with the bass upright. All you need to do is adjust the end pin to the height you need when sitting. I believe lots of DB players play sitting down. The Dean Pace has a tripod that again you should be able to adjust to the required height and Stagg apparently are R&D ing a similar stand. Give it a try. PS You should be able to bow a Stagg (I dont) but Jakesbass will be able to tell you better than I. I believe that the Pace is not bowable due to the lack of curvature on the fingerboard. Hope this helps.
How did you find out that Stagg are working on a tripod?? Any more info??
23.
How much do the NS' go for roughly and any ideas where I might be able to get one? I'm located near to Portsmouth
The NS Wav 4 is around £750 and you can buy them from here, http://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=NS+Wav+4 You can also get them in the UK but they are harder to find and with Thomann, you get a 30 day return with no questions asked. I also have a Stagg and having lessons with jakesbass and its the perfect instrument to enter the world of EUB. If you do get one, you have to get it in translucent red and join us reds. Its currently 4 to the reds and 1 to the blacks at the moment I think
24. Have to agree with the above. Please cancel the next lesson and don't waste any more money or damage with that guy. 27 is certainly not to old to learn and the small hands comment is rubbish. I am sure somebody on here will be able to find you a decent and proper tutor.
25.
Plays an upright eh? Probably jazzcakes then
Well today, he taught me Cmaj7, Dmin7 and G7 but not a sausage about Jazzcakes. How does he expect me to improve if he does not teach me about jazzcakes. I think i'm going to have to have a word with our jakesbass.
