Just want to give an update on this. I bought from GreeneKing one of his Bass Collection basses and all I can say is WOW. A superb bass, in mint condition with incredible sound and beautifully set up. Thanks you GreeneKing . More importantly, my wife adores the bass and keeps picking it up to practice and play. She is pretty shy and would not play infront of me but she picked it up the other day in front of me and started to tinker on it. So her confidence level has increased which is a very good thing. She is also saying that she can do things on it that she was struggling to do on my Fender's like using her little finger to reach frets. Plus she is beginning to rememeber where notes are. Most of all though, she is enjoying learning and playing so a happy ending in the end.

I only have experience of the Bass Centre when it was in Wapping. We are going back about 8 or 9 years but they seemed very helpful and friendly. Not sure who he was but once I went in and there was this american guy with blonde hair. He was ok but very OTT and a bit in your face. Still I had good service back then and it was always fun to venture out to wapping to visit the shop and soak up some bass stuff.

I also agree that Peter is an absolute gentleman. Very helpful, very genuine and very honest. I bought a Bass Collection from him for my wife and the bass is stunning. It is exactly as described. It play beautiful, is in mint condition, setup beautifully and is a true gem. Mt wife, Rebecca who is just starting out on the bass loves this Bass Collection and has not put it down. I thank you very much Peter for such a wonderful bass, a superb service and all the help. A true star you are. Michael

Yep do it. Play as much as you can and the experience of playing with other musicians will do you good and improve you as a player. Experience is experience and you should play as much as you can and you never know what it might lead onto.

For years I have used Elite Stadium's 40 - 105 and found them superb. I used to play with a plectrum playing Indie Guitar Punk Pop and they would last a long time. I used to play maybe a couple of nights a week plus 8 hour rehersals for 3 days a week and they would be good for some months. I used to break the odd one now and again but in terms of playability and tone, nothing beat them. You could also tell when they needed changing as the tone just dropped away and the punch vanished. I now have a Vintage Fretless and going to give their Stainless Steel Flatwound. Not sure to stick with my usual 45 - 105 or try softer and go for 40 - 100.

Thanks The Burpster. Its funny you mention Bartolinis as this is what I put on my ESP Jazz and its sounds fantastic. Its about 20 years old now and not much has beaten it for sound. So don't mind paying a little more for Bartolinis.

Just an update on the outcome of this story. The guy never phoned me back by 11 a.m which then got me starting to worry that maybe I am being scammed. So I sent a text at the end of the day and he phoned me back the next day. Parcel Force claimed that the bass had been sent to me but I was not in so it went back to the depot in Surrey. Makes me wonder why they never left a card to say they tried to deliver Anyway, the bass was then sent back to the depot in Warrington and was sitting there so the other guy was very surprised at this also. He then went to collect it and sent it again. How true this story is i really do not know. Anyway, he said he would sent it on Saturday on Parcel Force 24 hour so i should have it by Monday or Tuesday. So guess what, come the end of Tuesday and no bass. I also asked him to send it to my work address as that is where I will be all week. So end of Tuesday i sent a text to say n bass and on Wednesday he texted back and said sorry for delay but bass has now been sent and I will have it beforwe the weekend. Well guess what, end of Friday and no bass. So I sent a text again saying no bass, where has he sent it home or work and can he chase it up. Got text back saying sent to home and yes he will chase it up. Why he sent it to my home I have no idea as we agreed to send it to my work. Anyway, Saturday morning, knock on the door and low and behold, it arrived by Parcel Force. It came with a hard case which is a bonus and the bass is in mint condition. It plays very nice but feels excatly like its brand new and has not played in at all. The ad on Ebay did say it was bought brand new and has just sat in the hard case for 12 months so this I can believe. It could do with a setup I guess especially as the E string is a lot quiter than the other strings. I may even change the pickup at some point. All in all, very happy. So it all ended well in the end. Not really sure how much truth is in what the seller said and what parcel Force said but at the end of the day I got the bass. Not sure if there is a moral to this story but hopefully it might be intersting to others who may be thinking about buying a bass from Ebay and what they can do if they run into any troubles. Also many thanks to all those that offered help. It really did help me keep on top of this.

Hi The Burpster, Volume seems fine apart from the E string sounding quiet but thats probably just setup. I am after better tone. The original pickup just sounds a bit boxey and flat. When I play my ESP Jazz and even my Squire Vintage Frettless, both sound alive, fresh, punchy and exciting. Both sound different but both sound superb and exciting. They are also both passive. The single coil on the precision just sounds hollow, boxey and thin. Top end sound thin, weak and twangy and bottom end sounds boxey, wooly, muffled and thin. The mids seem pretty non existant. Sorry for being dumb but what are winds?? From what your saying the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Single Coil P-Bass SCPB-3 will just make it louder and more powerful but not necessarily sound any different to the Hot Single Coil P-Bass SCPB-2???

Hi, I have just bought a Fender Precision 51' re-issue bass and I fancy changing its the single coil pickup to something better. The ones I have seen are either the, [b]Seymour Duncan Hot for Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-2 Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound for Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-3[/b] Does anyone know what difference there would be in these two? They also do a, [b]Seymour Duncan Vintage Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-1 [/b] This sounds very much like what I have already but would this be better than the stock Fender one which sounds a bit wooly? Thanks for any advice.

Hi, At Xmas I bought a Squire Vintage Fretless bass which I must say is superb. Ideal for playing around with and to start out with learning the art of fretless. However, some of the fret filler that makes up the lines just crummbled and fell out yesterday leaving a hole. It does not affect the playing but it should not really do this after 4 weeks of owning it. I was going to take it back to the shop today (a well known music shop in Guildford) but I was wondering what I should expect then to do. Will they just send it away for repair or should I expect an exchange or something else. Just wondering what I should expect them to do. Thanks for any advice.

You could do Lotus colours. You have the Type 25 which is Lotus Racing Green with yellow stripe. Type 79 with is the JPS Lotus colours which is black and gold. JPS lotus colours of Black with Gold. The Type 49 which is the Goldleaf Lotus which is Red, White and Gold. You also have the Type 23 which is white with green stripes and the Type 99 which is yellow and blue.

Hi Everyone, Here is a link to my old bands album. We were called Inter and the album is called Got My Nine. It was recorded at the end 1999 and early 2000 at Loco Studios in South Wales. It was produced by a chap called Mark Wallis who was the engineer on U2's Joshua Tree. He has also worked with many more artists including The Smiths and The Wildhearts to name a few. The album was released in June 2000 and 4 singles were released from it. Q magazine gave it 4 out of 5 and compared us to Ash and The Wonder Stuff and said we also sound a bit Radiohead and Green Day. The band went on to have a fair amount of success with lots of radio and TV work including two John Peel sessions for Radio 1. Also one of our singles, Happy Ending was John Peel's favourite song on 1997. Also, our song Boss Grasshopper was used to advertise Casio G Shock watches in cinema's. From a bass playing point of view, I loved every minute of the recording. The studio had a great Washburn fretless acoustic which I used on our track The Great Unknown. Also one of the songs has seven, yes seven bass line. Your never know though :) Anyway, if anyone want some good old catchy guitar punk pop, then feel free to download. I started playing bass back in the late 80's when I was 16 after seeing U2 at Live Aid and thinking Adam Clayton looked so cool. I was also a big fan of The Police and Sting. I had no idea about music but thought the bass was interesting. After playing for a bit I fell in love with it and spent the next two years in my bedroom just playing bass to all my records. I lost all my old friends as I never went out, I just spent every free hour playing bass and reading everything about bass. I sort of formed a band with a friend at college and we wrote some pretty good songs. We split and I ended up joining another band which did lots of gigs including Brixton Academy. That band only lasted about 4 years but it was really good for me to try things out and experiment and gain some experience gigging. I then formed another band with my original friend from college and some other members of local bands. The band was called Inter. The scene around Farnborough was very big in the mid to late 90's with hundreds of bands forming and playing. My goal was always to record a CD, have a song played on the radio and do a gig in Europe. We ended up getting a pretty good record deal, touring the whole of the UK and some of Europe, recording and releasing an album and 4 singles, lots of radio and TV work including two Radio 1 John Peel sessions and Q magazine gave our album 4 out of 5. So all in all, I achieved a lot more that I had ever wished for. However, this all ended in 2000 and I was pretty much sick of the music industry and burnt out from playing. I wrote a lot of the songs and did most of the arrangements and I was honestly sick of it. I loved every minute of it but I had just had enough of it. So I turned my back on it. Sold all but one of my basses and all my equipment, went into hiding and closed that chapter of my life. After playing bass for a living, I did not have the energy to just go and play for fun. I didn't want to go and join a new band with a bunch of strangers as it would be to frustrating and the interest and energy was gone. Going from a band that was so locked together and knew each other inside out to just doing it casual was not for me. I ended up getting married and having a son who is now 5. My wife has been superb but hates me not playing. She's knows I am very creative and have lots of energy and hates me not having a channel to express myself. She has really supported me and has helped me to try and find other ways to express myself but nothing apart from music works for me. The break has done me good and really energised me and despite the break being far to long, I am really raring to start playing again. I started to play a little bit on my old bass but I wanted something new and fresh to play so I bought a Fender Precision 1953 re-issue bass. In the search for a new bass, I came across a beautiful Squire Vintage Jazz Frettless and I fell in love with it but I could not justify buying two basses at this stage plus I could not afford it. However, I came home one day from work and my beautiful wife had secretly bought it for me. So now I am learning to play Frettless and I adore it. Its so much fun but also very challenging which is exactly what I need. My long term plan is still not set. I really want to be very comfortable and confident playing frettless bass. I am even tempted to go for some frettless bass lessons and really develop my ability on the fretless. I would also like to get into a band of some sort just for the fun of playing in a group together. I am not sure what sort of stuff I would like to play but something thats fun. I also plan to get an electric upright double bass. Again, maybe to tinker with and maybe to play in a band. I would love to learn jazz but I have a feeling this might take a lot of effort as I know nothing about jazz and it seems very un-natural style for me to play. So thats my story I guess. coasterbass Yep, already done that. I contacted previous ebay members who he had dealt with and got the address from them. I also got his mobile phone number. So I have all his details. Fingers crossed it won't have to come to anything and the bass will turn up.

Right, a break through. I tried the mobile number that Ebay sent me and I got through to the chap. He was very surprised that I had not received the bass but said that he will chase it up with Parcel Force. He had his apendix out which is why he had been in hospital and he hardly ever goes online which is why he does not check his emails. He said he will phone me tomorrow by 11.am so fingers crossed I might get this sorted. I will keep you posted.

Paul Webb of Talk talk was an excellent bass player. Also a second vote for Derek Forbes from the early Simple Minds stuff.
