What's the difference between the Sub Ray 4 and the Ray 4? Is the Sub an old model that's been replaced by the Ray 4?

They haven't made them for ages, they churn out the same as this thread shows. When did Fender last release an unlined fretless standard Jazz or Precision let alone a fretless maple necked bass. An American stack knob Jazz or American 51 Precision as well, it's been donkeys years.

I so despair at Fender and I love them, its all I play but why oh why do they not do anything different or exciting. If this was me, I would be releasing the following, An American Vintage 51 Precision in some nice retro pastel colours An American Vintage Stack Knob 60's Jazz A Mexican or Japanese FSR unlined fretless Vintage 70's Precision in natural with maple board A Mexican or Japanese FSR Vintage 70's Telecaster bass An unlined fretless modern Precision with rosewood board. An unlined fretless modern Jazz with rosewood board

I have a very similar bass minus the fretless maple board. One day I will get a fretless maple board for mine.

This is my CIJ 62 reissue Jazz. It was bought brand new in 89 from Nova Guitar Centre in Guildford and has seen 30 years of hard gigging including TV, tours, radio sessions etc. Pickups are changed to Barts and the pickguard has been changed from white to the black but apart from that it is all original. It is the best sounding and playing bass I have ever had and will never leave me. It has been with me for my entire music career and has been my main working bass. All the mojo is genuine wear and tear apart from the two engravements. The GB is my dads initials who bought the bass for me and who died a couple of months before I signed my record deal. The MB 4 LG is my initials and the initials of Lisa Germano, the violinist who I fancied when I was younger.

Just as a side question, if I'd bought a fretless Fender Precision bass in the 70's, what strings would Fender have fitted to it, flats or rounds?

Yeah, to me its like a Precision with the tone in the center. Not clanky and not thumpy, just a very rounded bass tone. Generic sounding even.

Quite possibly although my Limelight Fretless Jazz is currently in production so I might be getting no.2. I might ask Mark how many hes made.
