1. I would really like to get a Status Fretless neck for my Stingray someday.
2. I have 5 and they are all for a reason. 1. My Fender Japan Jazz 66 Reissue is pretty my daily these days. It's what I would use pretty much for most things apart from fretless. I just feel the most comfortable playing it. 2. My ESP 400 Series Jazz used to be my main workhorse for the last 25 years and has toured and recorded everywhere. It's pretty beaten up now, sounds amazing, has sentimental value to me and is now fretless. My main fretless work horse. 3. My Stingray was always my dream bass and when I signed my record deal and got my advance I bought one. It's what I had always worked towards getting as a bass player. 4. My Fender Japan 51 Precision is a new addition but something that I wanted as a collectors item for some Motown retro fun. It's very beaten up but looks and sounds great. 5. My Warwick Streamer Jazzman fretless was the fretless bass I wanted to get when learning very much like the Stingray was. It's a great bass but I am a Fender man and not for me so will be sold/traded at some point.
3. I can't think of anything original these days, its all been done before. Its how you present it and the different use of tone that makes it different.
4. Really enjoyed that and I loved how it effortlessly blended into new directions by just changing something simple. I also found it interesting how the bass took the role and tone of a guitar and for me it worked. I agree that it could had been played on a guitar but I think some of the tone and personally would had been lost. What I would had liked would be some soft keys. Either way, totally loved it.
5. Thanks Beedster. The purpose is to just add one to my collection rather than try and get the best fretless MIJ Precision. I have a very limited edition 2013 Fender Japan Jazz 66 Reissue which is the nicest bass I have ever played. It is white with matching headstock, blocks, binding etc. I have always wanted one after seeing them on the Fender Japan website. Never thought I would get one but then a very limited quantity were imported in to the UK (around 50 I think) and so I bought one and couldn't be happier. I also have a very rare Fender Japan 51' Precision from the early/mid 90's. It's not one of the later reissues from early 2000 that came in sunburst and butterscotch. I first played one when recording an album in 1998 and fell in love with it. They made it in a very pale yellow lemon colour but I never ever saw one. I have been hunting for one in this colour for 17 years and this year one came up for the first time ever and so I bought it. Its pretty beaten up but that is part of the charm and it is amazing. I already have the most amazing fretless Jazz in the shape of an ESP 66 reissue Jazz as well as a Warwick Streamer Jazzman fretless. I just fancy adding a Fender Jap fretless Precision to my collection. I shall keep looking but I may need to build my own as you suggest.
6. Cheers everyone. I will just keep looking. The two Jap Fenders I currently have I never ever thought I would own, especially one of them so I am hopeful something will turn up
7.
I'd have thought your best bet is to buy one of the numerous USA Precision FLs on here at the moment, by the time you've paid for an MIJ Precision, and then defretted (and devalued) it, it might be that the USA route will be equally economic.
I may have to do that but I love Jap Fenders and all things Japanese so want to at least try and get one
8. I am a big fan of Fender Japan basses, having a few in my collection but one bass eludes me, a Fender Japan Precision Fretless. Do they actually exist? I've seen lots Fender Japan Jazz Fretless basses for sale but not any Precision Fretless. I'm wondering if my best option is to get a Japanese fretted Precision and get it professionally deforested.
9.
Very nice...but where's the Natalie Imbruglia profile pic gone??????????
Haha you have such a good memory. Either that or you just have this association of my name with Natalie Imbruglia Either way, I've traded her in now for someone new. My new virtual girlfriend is Gal Gadot
10. Link worked for me. Nice effort and lovely bass.
11. Finally took a trip to Bass Direct to trade in my EBS Classic 60 combo and pick up a MarkBass MiniMark 802 combo. Walked in and wow, walls and walls of amazing basses. It was like an Aladdin's cave I was greeted by a very helpful young guy (Markus??) who setup the 802 combo for me and offered to get me any bass I wanted. At the same time he was serving a guy from Manchester who was playing through a Sandberg California fretless and Roscoe fretless which both sounded amazing. We got chatting and I ended up playing them both as well. Not so keen on the Roscoe but the Sandberg was lovely. I have never played a Sandberg before but it was very nice indeed. The guy then went on to try a Roscoe Century 6 stringer which I think he ended up buying I got to try a Kala UBass which I really didn't like. I own a Kala Sub bass which is incredible but the UBass felt cheap and did not sound too good. I also tried a classic Stingray and a Spector Euro 4. The Stingray was very heavy and didn't seem any different to a normal Stingray but the Spector sounded awesome. Really fell in love with it and the tone was to die for. Really had to hold back on taking the plunge Anyway, the MarkBass sounded amazing and really impressed with the tone considering it only has a volume, VLE and VPF. All my basses (Stingray, Fender 66 Jazz, ESP fretless, Warwick Streamer fretless, Fender Telebass and Kala Sub) sound amazing through it. I'm half tempted to trade in my EBS Reidmar and Classic 112 and get a MarkBass Little Mark and New York cab. Many thanks to Mark and Markus as Bass Direct. Extreme helpful and such a wonderful shop. I think I will be making the trip up from Surrey again. 12.
Waterfront has a very nice bass tone, I must say. It gets the spotlight at the start of the song, too.
The main bass line that goes through the whole song is a sequencer although Derek did play it on early version of the song. The bass parts now are the little runs that play over the sequenced bass line.
13.
Linus27 did an interview with Derek Forbes for Basschat, a few years back: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/94210-basschat-derek-forbes-interview/
Thank you, I was going to search for the link to my interview to post here
14. I have one of these also and they are simply amazing. Super rare and sounds incredible. I will never sell mine. Good luck with your sale.
15. Sold my Streamer LX to Mark. Totally smooth transaction with great communication all the way and quick payment. Total hassle free and pleasure to deal with as well as a great guy so buy/sell with confidence. Thanks again Mark.
16. Really enjoyed that. Brought back so many good memories of going on tour, especially as Inwas the one who owned the tour van and did most of the driving
17. Price or Trade Value: £900 I am selling my German made November 2011 Warwick Streamer LX4. I bought it brand new and is in mint condition. It has never left the house, been gigged or generally played that much so is in immaculate condition. Details are as follows, Model: Warwick Streamer LX 4 String Pickups: MEC act. P/J Finish: Natural Oil Fingerboard: Fretted Wenge Hardware: Chrome Electronics: MEC act. 2-way Body Wood: Coloured Flamed Maple AAA Neck Wood: Ovangkol Bridge Type: Warwick 2-piece Bridge Machine Heads: Warwick Bass Machine Heads The bass comes complete with Warwick padded gig bag, also in mint condition, user manual which contains tools, manual, wax, polishing cloth, strap, strap locks etc. As I say, this bass is in mint condition and sounds fantastic. It has a lovely thin neck and only weights 3.9kg I am in no rush to sell as I am just slimming down some of my collection. I would prefer a sale but would be interested in a trade for a Fender Tony Franklin Fretless Precision. I am in Surrey but happy to post or collection if preferred. 18. Really enjoyed that and just an amazing tone. Sade has the most seductive eyes ever.
19.
I think my muscle memory would be ok - I'm even more sold on the idea now
Do it then. I put it off for too long and regretted not doing it sooner. You could start cheap and buy a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz and then flog it for something better if you find it is for you.
20. I adore playing fretless. I would say go for it. As already said, you will either take to it or find its not for you. For me it's boils down to two things, your technique and your ear. If your technique/muscle memory is very good and you can place you fretting hand pretty much spot on every time, then that's half the battle. If you have a very good ear, then you will then be able to make the minor adjustments to improve which in turn will improve your muscle memory. When I first started playing bass, I got a fretless and I could not play for toffee. Everything was out of tune and all over the shop. Twenty years of playing later, tried again and it was no different than playing a fretted. Ended up just playing fretless all the time. Twenty years of technique and muscle memory paid off. I will also add that being comfortable with a neck makes a difference. My Warwick it so easy to play and I can hit the notes right first time. My ESP Jazz is nearly the same. However, a had a fretless stingray and it was a real slog to hit the notes on the first fret perfectly. This in turn would mean my hand would be in the wrong position for other notes. I was always having to adjust to be in tune. These are my current two fretless basses. A Warwick Streamer Jazzman and an ESP 400 Series Jazz. I am still on the hunt for my dream fretless so the Warwick might be for sale at some point. I do love it so I may just keep it and get another fretless
21. Thank you for all your advise and guidance. Really do appreciate it. I have bought the Kala Sub bass that was for sale on here so that's sorted. Keeping it fun is key at this stage so thanks for mentioning that. In my head it's lets do it properly which is wrong so I must avoid falling in to that trap. I'll see how it goes for 6 months of just having fun and noodling and if going well, then maybe I'll look into finding a suitable teacher who can start to add some structure and learning.
22. Hi, I'm just after some advice and guidance on the best approach to help my daughter learn to play bass. She is only 6 but is starting to show interest and from time to time asks to play one of my basses. The first thing I will do is to get her a Kala bass so she has something that will suit her size. I also have a really nice EBS Classic combo which she can have as well. My concern is the best approach for her to learn. I am self taught, started at 16 and just locked myself away in my bedroom for 2 years and then went out and joined a band. Not really ideal for my daughter. My son started drums at around 8 and did have lessons but to be fair, him and I clashed whenever I got involved, helping him practise and offering advice. As soon as I stepped away, he started to blossom and now at 12, has passed grade 2 drums and has now moved on to Violin and is working towards his grade 3, then 5 and then grade 8. His Violin teacher says he is amazing and he will eventually move to Viola. He also plays Piano and started composing. So, I would like to distance myself from my daughters learning and just be there for any questions, technical problems and support. The last thing I want to do is to start teaching her and getting into arguments and eventually putting her off. Hopefully in time, she would feel confident to play and chat, be it in 2 years, 5 years or 20 years time. If she went for lessons, I would also ask my wife to take her. It was bad enough taking my son to drum lessons in terms of chatting music and understanding everything he was being taught so going to bass lessons would be a nightmare for her The obvious option is get her a teacher but my concern is she will get bogged down with learning to read music at this stage, become bored and uninterested rather than just enjoying making a noise and learning the basics. Learning to read will be an eventual goal but is 6 just a bit young and should I just let her noodle in her bedroom for a few years and see where it leads? Just not sure what the next step would be as well keeping myself distanced so to not put her off.
