1.
Lovely interview, thanks for that. I once met Mo at the old Bass Centre in Wapping, a genuinely nice man, great to talk to.
I met him once too when he came to give us a lesson at the M.I. above the old Bass Centre in Wapping ('95 or '96) he was great, showing up at 9am on a freezing morning full of enthusiasm and happy to share his knowledge with us. He had his trusty P bass and fretless jazz with him. After he had floored us all with his fretless playing (so melodic, so beautiful - it did sound like singing) I was so amazed that I just blurted out, " OH MY GOD, IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A KEYBOARD!!" (I was young and had never seen or heard anyone play a fretless in 'real life' never mind a player as accomplished as Mo) I will never forget the look he gave me. He looked quite miffed and speechless in a 'the youth of today - we're doomed' kind of way. He didn't say a word though and was brilliant for the rest of the lesson. Sorry about that Mo, and thank you.
2. I know that both Bruce Thomas and Andy Rourke used original pre-CBS Precisions to record with (yes A Rourke also used a Yamaha BB sometimes) so my vote goes to the Fender Original P pickup. Sounds amazing and won't break the bank. Class tone that will make you smile whatever style you're playing.
3. SOLD ~ TECH 21 SANSAMP BASS DRIVER DI pedal in very good condition. Light useage, home recording mostly plus a couple of gigs. Not seen any use at all for 18 months since I became a dad again. *Edit: comes with the original Tech 21 instruction booklet which contains all the great sample settings (SVT, Bassman, Fat tube etc..) £110 posted Cheers, Simon.

5. Kind of an aside but I came across this on the 'tube the other day. A great live radio broadcast from '71 called "Meddled", hosted by John Peel. Check it out if you have time.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bw9eiYF6CXk
6. Live Underslunky is my favourite. Roly was amazing but I do prefer Zia's live interpretations on this album. A bit faster and better for it imo. Soundtrack to my misspent youth, saw them live many times in the 90's. Cracking live band Played on the same bill as them at a festival in Cardiff about 6 years ago. They were down to playing as a 4 piece with Ed Wynne's wife on bass. She was pretty awesome too.
7. The bottom line is that a '60s Jazz can sound like pretty much anything, that's why they're still being played and reissued today. Good luck finding your sound from it! Edit: for a 'general' 60's Jazz tone you could try and cop the bass tone on Lenny Kravitz's debut album. Ok, of course it's not from the 60's but he certainly did his homework and it works a treat for that vibe.
8. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214975-my-fenders-greatest-hits-project-help-me-decide-on-what-finish-please/page__pid__2191173#entry2191173 You can see my P body on this thread in build diaries. Nice grain for alder, top quality wood from Simms. They are great to chat to on the phone too, really helpful. (No affiliation by the way)
9. http://www.simscustom.com/html/00bodyshop.htm Simms custom shop gets my vote. I ordered a lightweight alder P bass body from them. It's a cnc clone of a genuine '64 P and my Precision now weighs in at 8.3lbs which my bad back likes alot. Pricey though as I think it was 240 for the body which was just the bare wood. Another 200 for any colour. They did have even lighter weight swamp ash at the time too. I did my body natural myself and boy is it resonant, a pleasure to play even acoustically.
10. http://www.carolkaye.com/www/education/index.htm No, just gets your chords down, learn how they cycle and be both creative and musical from the start. Check out the Carol Kaye method. She's one of the most recorded bassists ever and for good reason.
11. Yes, a 4005 for around 500 quid would make me a very happy camper indeed.
12. Congrats man, that does sound good for a second practice. And personally I'm loving the über-grind!
13. Brilliant! Thanks for posting that. I love his basswork on the Doors L.A. Woman album. He must've reverted to his 'shotgun' approach for the title track though, can't see anyone pumping that for six minutes on just the one finger! Interesting he used rounds too. I always did wonder.
14. If you like Mingus then The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 by the Bill Evans Trio is a winner. Scott Lafaro on upright bass, bringing it. Massively.
15. Show him this.
16. Old carpet attached to the walls and floor works well as an insulator, meaning your radiator will be more effective. Helps soundproofing a bit too. Defo insulate the roof space as a priority. Heat rises and all that.
17. Gold hardware on a Stingray looks nice.
18. Getting stoned off my tits everyday. Bridge pickups.
19. I'd start at the Squier Classic Vibe jazz in OW. It may surprise you.
20.
Yes. As shown in this clip... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb-MwVUUy3g
That was great, thanks for posting! I really love Counterparts as it was the first new Rush album to come out after I had discovered them. Felt like it was 'mine' if you know what I mean. The stripped back approach worked great ( a perfect situation for the jazz bass to make it's big comeback). I hope they record like that again one day.
21. This is the Pink Floyd I love. Rog's tone at around the 11 minute mark is fab. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x62NxxQis3o
