1. I know how you feel (lying on the floor trying to straighten my back as I read about yours) except I haven't got any gigs coming up, never mind one tonight! I fully recommend a pocketful of Tramadol and a nice light Hofner as the way forward! Best of luck with the gig man and who cares if you play it sat down? I say you're totally rock'n'roll for actually turning up in your condition! Respec'!
2.
Hello Si. Thanks for starting this thread! .. I found myself in a similar situation to you about 12-months ago. I also have young children (three under 10) and I don't have any interest or spare time for egos/bands/jam nights etc I decided to go down the 'Soundcloud' route and for the most part have enjoyed the whole experience of writing & producing my own tunes. At first, it can appear to be very daunting.. about 10-years ago I was using clunky ADAT/Portastudio/Outboard racks and making CD's, but since making the move over to the laptop, I've found it so much easier and believe me, it's addictive! The best advert for getting people on board to collaborate is YOU and YOUR music.. I found a guy on 'Soundcloud' in Seoul, South Korea who plays Drums (I liked some of his tracks and asked him - via Google translator - if he would play on an instrumental I was working on called 'Retro Harmonics'. He liked the track, and added some drums.. which was really great! I've also linked up with an old friend of mine, who played in a band with me when we first started out 20-years ago, who lives 190 miles away, and we're recording together again via 'Souncloud' and using Dropbox to share WAV files over the internet. Anyway, hope all goes well and I wish you all the best with your music! because it's all about the music!! Thanks also to all for sharing their thoughts.. very interesting thread!
Thank you Simon, it's really great to hear how you managed to do it. Great advice! Cheers also to everyone else for your suggestions, much appreciated!
3. Wow that looks amazing! Graffiti paint - what a discovery! I have actually just spent this evening sanding OFF some nitrocellulose vintage amber tint on my jazz neck. It looked horrible just yellow and cheesy. Cost me £12 too. That shock orange looks just like fiesta red and the finish looks very pro too. Congratulations! I wonder if they do anything like surf green. What kind of clear coat did you use?
4.
Didnt realise sound cloud did collaboration, sorry
Me neither, hence this thread I've always gone out and made music the old fashioned way I don't have a soundcloud account and I've only been on there to listen to mate's tunes and BC's monthly composition competition so I'll certainly be checking this new info out cheers. Just out of interest, do any of you new fangled types know if there are any alternatives or is SoundCloud so good at this kind of thing that it has the monopoly? Thanks for the help peeps.
5. Hey everybody. Ok, so I'm not playing in a band anymore and I'm not able to get out to jam nights for the foreseeable due to having little ones. Can any of you recommend anywhere online where it's good to meet other musicians of the world and collectively lay down tracks with each other to create new music? Anyone here had success with this kind of thing (as in have you done this and been pleased with the tunes you've made with strangers?) Seems like it's the way forward with my current situation. Cheers, Si.
6.
This neat as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kw0ltIsRvI
Oooh I really liked that!
7. What a great chap to deal with! I sold a set of Hipshot Ultralights to Gary and he paid instantly whist reassuring me he was in no hurry, so a very nice chilled deal indeed with great communication throughout. I actually dropped them off at his place when I discovered how close by we live, but alas we missed each other this time. Gary, I hope we do cross paths eventually just so I can pick your brains about your cars I saw today, before we even get started on basses! Deal with utter confidence here people, Gary's a genuine top bloke.
8. Ah mate your Wal is beautiful! Congrats! If Chris W has set it up it will play like a dream. He used to set up my basses at the original London Bass Centre, best I've ever had.
9. Check out this first part of the Chili Peppers 'Funky Monks' doc. At 6.51 Flea and Anthony are working on Sir Psycho Sexy acoustically and Flea's Wal still sounds like a Wal UNPLUGGED! All that brass hardware must really play its part too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hubUewYfGQ
10. Easy this one... If you have the funds and the time, be open to owning any Stingray from any time period. Get out there and try out as many as you possibly can, having lots of fun doing so. Buy the first one that you really can't imagine being without. Own an amazing bass with no regrets.
11. My favourite track with Jaco wearing his sideman cap. This is one sweet groove The outro is pure Jaco. You can almost see the mischievous grin on his face, knowing that it's going down on a track hoping to be a top 40 single http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgGjg9FLq74
12. This is me and my two best mates who I only get to see once a year since I moved to Cardiff from North Wales. We have an annual jam where we hire out the local village hall and play all day. We called ourselves The Motherload when we were kids (there's another band called this now I believe) We just jammed a couple of bits then recorded them live into a 16 track, with me given the 'nod' duties. A great lesson learned on this day - when improvising instrumentally, don't worry about counting how many times to this bit or that bit (everyone always counts things a bit different anyway ) Give someone the 'nod' duties and follow their cues. Everyone can just focus on playing the music then instead of counting! Anyways this is us following our noses, making it up as we go. I hope you enjoy, we did! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-DFf1jH7zQ
13. Marc bought some Fender tuners off me today. Great swift deal with instant payment and nice comms. Great chap to deal with. Many thanks Marc!
14. I've just sold some Roto strings to Pete and the deal was done super quick and easy. Top bloke. Cheers Pete!
15.
Just to let you all know there is a pleasant, attractive girl that works in PMT in Leeds This thread is getting all a bit 70's sitcom now
Well to bring it back to 2013, (which is also the title of the great track that opens the new album ), I will say that it's a shame we won't hear her own creative voice for a while as she joined the band to tour the new album after More Light was completed. She can definitely rock live so it will be interesting to see what she comes up with in the studio. I just hope they don't leave it five years again between albums!
16. SOLD Set of 4 Hipshot Ultralight HB6C tuners (satin finish) for Fender style basses. I've had them on my bass for two years and they work perfectly. When I bought them from Bassdirect the chappie there forgot to send me the 4 fixing screws at first so I drilled the fixing hole on one of them a tad wider to incorporate some slightly bigger screws I had. Unfortunately I not only drilled through the tuner hole but the headstock and the edge of the front washer too -See photo below. (I was working some pretty hardcore night shifts at the time so my judgement wasn't at it's best shall we say! ) Following this, I got the proper Hipshot screws sent to me and the slightly wider hole does not in anyway affect the tuner and the Hipshot screw holds it fine as it should. **Edit**: this only happened to the one tuner and just to make very clear - it works perfectly and once fitted, it stays in place rock solid, same as the other three. The nick in the front washer is less noticeable when the locking nut/ferrule is in place or indeed a different front washer could easily be used from another tuner. There are some small marks on each string post which have been left by strings but of course when they are re-strung they won't be seen. They have been fantastic tuners that are very accurate and hold their tuning better than any I have ever owned. Nice ratio with a lovely smooth action. Also, they remove 1/2 a pound of weight from the headstock compared to regular Fender tuners - very bad back friendly! *** Price dropped to £45 posted for a quick sale *** An absolute bargain for such quality tuners. Bassdirect are still selling these Hipshots for £26 A PIECE! Cheers, Si.
17. Rotosound Rotobass 45-105 nickel on steel strings (same as the Swingbass 66 nickels but without the blue silks - these have no silks) Unused set still in their box, never will get used by me as I just use flats now. £10 posted.
18. SOLD Set of 4 Fender bass tuners (11/16) that came with my Fender American Special Jazz neck. They are the ones that also came on the USA Highway One basses and also the Mexican standards. They are in new condition, never been used as I installed Hipshot lightweight tuners as soon as my jazz neck arrived. They come with their bushings and screws. £35 posted
19.
To go along with her talent she's also much easier on the eye than Mani *sorry Mani if you're reading
Aw, poor Mani. You'll have him sobbing into his toby jugs with that one. (Doubt he'd argue with you there though!)
20. A series/parallel switch is an absolute must for all Jazz bass heads imho. Why compromise? Be both. In a band setting a Jazz in series gets there imo (Precision like, beefy) The Jazz tone isn't for me personally, so I solely play soul-y P-bass now
21. Fair play to her then, what a gig to walk into eh? I've read that she worked in the past with Scream's guitarist Barrie Cadogan at Vintage and Rare Guitars on Denmark St, so there's her in. (Wonder if she got her stunning vintage P-bass working there - perks of the job? )
22. Just been watching Primal Scream's full Glastonbury set which I thought was great, Simone Butler is doing a brill job at filling Mani's shoes full time. She a good fit for the band and seems to be taking it all in her stride, very pro. But where has she come from? Anyone know of any other bands she's been in or work she's done? She's also been gigging one of the coolest looking Precisions I've ever seen. Here's the Glasto set... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0dFLjWJnr0
