1. Friday night bump boys and girls! Go on, make me an offer!
2.
Hi all, Just a quick question! Looking for recommendations for an electric/acoustic bass with an upright sound. Been looking at those Kala U-Basses although open to options. Would something like a fretless Hofner do the job? Not really interested in an EUB as such - just trying to get some options Thanks in advance for advice or opinions Danny
As it goes I do have an acoustic bass up for sale on here at the moment. It's a lovely Breedlove and it sounds great. I use phosfor bronze strings for a zingy piano-like sound but apparently they sound quite uprighty with those Pyramid tape- wound strings on. Seen some nice videos on YouTube where people have gone in that direction. PM me if you're interested...
3. I sold a bass to Keith this week and he was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Makes a very nice cup of tea too!
4. Hi there. I both both basses all the time so I've often tried to get a convincing upright sound from the electric when I just have the one bass on a gig. No electric bass will sound like an acoustic upright unfortunately. Fretless basses sound even less like an upright. You can achieve a vague approximation with mist basses by adjusting your right hand technique and playing with the sides of your fingers right over the fingerboard (gives that slight growly sound). Especially with flatwound strings- Thomastiks are best for this. I've tried every electric upright around and the only one that gets close is the Yamaha SLB200. A fantastic instrument that has a rich upright bass tone and sounds beautiful with a bow too. Which is über-rare! I've been hankered after a Kala U-bass for a while now. The mahogany fretted version (typically, the most expensive one at around £495) is the most convincing and is lovely to play. Oddly, the fretless version sounds mirr like a fretless bass than an upright. So if you want a new instrument, go Kala or Yamaha depending on what you want to spend. But I'd recommend trying a set of Thomastik Jazz Flats http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/bass-guitar-strings-sets-c34/thomastik-infeld-thomastik-jf344-4-string-jazz-flatwound-43-100-bass-guitar-strings-p842/s884?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=thomastik-infeld-thomastik-jf344-4-string-jazz-flatwound-43-100-bass-g-thomjf344&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=CNLNwOucw8QCFVDHtAod7ncA7A first with the wonky right hand trick!
5. Tuesday afternoon bump! Just bought a new bass so pretty keen to sell. Any sensible offers? You know you want to...
6.
Owning a Breedlove acoustic bass myself, albeit a different model in fretless guise, I too spent an age before plumping for the Breedlove. I can attest to the quality tone both plugged in and as a pure acoustic and the quality of fit and finish for its price point. GLWTS!
They are great instruments and in my opinion sound much better than the majority of higher priced ABG's...
7. Sunday morning bump boys and girls! Grab yourselves a lovely piece of kit. Spent ages researching acoustic bass guitars (there are numerous duffers out there) and this was the daddy...
8. Oh my god!! I'm in bass heaven!!
9.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tUTsZ78xIw Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly - Flora Purim
Wow! Beautiful song. Never heard this before. Thanks for sharing
10. Friday night bump! Posted this at a stupid time yesterday so hardly anybody saw it. In fact I could barely find it myself just now it was sofa down the list. Really hoping for an Infinity NT V trade so if you've got one and fancy a change; now's your chance! Otherwise as close to the asking price as you can folks; have had some offers already but not quite in the right ballpark. Thanks!
11. I also rest my thumb on the E string and hop about or sometimes at the end of the fingerboard if I need to bottom string a lot. Nice round tones available in the fingerboard position...
12. I recently tried Belcantos and found them way too taut. I usually play Thomastik Weichs though which are very light. I wanted something that bowed better but it all felt too much like hard work with the Belcantos. Back on the old Weichs now!
13. Hi folks I really should have posted about this record when it came out just over two years ago but there you go... I recorded an album of trio improvisations with pianist Jez Carr (who you might know from his duo record with Steve Lawson) and saxophonist Mike Haughton (from Iona). We recorded the whole album in one day and at the time it got a lovely response. I used my trusty Warwick Triumph upright for the whole album which was a joy. Of all the basses I've owned over the years, that is my favourite and nothing really sounds like it. You can check out the record on Bandcamp at http://music.simonlittlebass.com We called it Foreground Music, Vol. I. We haven't made volume II yet, but I'm sure one day we will! Hope you like it
14. Aww thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it sir!
15. Hi there Just thought I'd add that I'd be willing to trade this bass for an Aguilar SL112 cab if it's in very good condition. Just throwing that out there...
16. Hi there I'm looking to sell my 2006 Warwick Thumb Bass NT VI or trade for a Warwick Infinity NT V string. This is the bass I recorded my first two solo records on so hopefully some of you will already know what it sounds like (or not; I used an awful lot of effects on those records!) It's a beautiful German made 2006 model. All standard except Schaller strap locks replacing the slightly dodgy Warwick ones. Here's the bumpf from the Warwick website. Machineheads: Warwick Machine Heads Nut: Just-A-Nut III Brass Neck Wood: Wenge neck, 5 laminations Fretboard: Tigerstripe Ebony fingerboard Inlay: --- Fluorescent Side Dot: lluminated Side-Dots Fingerboard Radius: 47" Scale length: 34" (long scale) Fret quantity material and size: 26 Jumbo Bronze (extra hard) frets (width: 2.9 mm / height: 1.3 mm) Frets: IFT - Invisible Fretwork Technology Body Shape: Curved Body Shape Bodywood (Topwood / Backwood): Bubinga Pommelé body Pickups: Active MEC Soapbar H/H Electronics: Active MEC 3-way electronics Pot layout: Volume P/P & Balance stacked / Mid / Treble & Bass stacked Switch: --- Function of switch: --- Pickguard: --- Bridge system: 2-piece solid Brass Warwick Bridge Strap system: Warwick security locks Construction: Hidden neck Left Righthand: right-handed or left-handed Colour possibilities: Natural Oil Finish, Coloured Oil Finish or High Polish Finish Hardware colour: Black, Chrome or Gold hardware String label / gauges: Warwick EMP-strings 025" - 135" (38401M) Weight: 5.3 kg I'm selling as I hardly ever need to play a six-string and would really like to get another good Warwick 5. So if anyone has an Infinity NT 5 (a German one) or possibly a Streamer Stage II 5 I'd be interested in a straight trade. I'd have to play the bass first though to make sure it's right. I'm located in Peckham SE London so if you want to come try the bass out drop me a line. It is the Warwick flagship bass. There's really nothing like this instrument. Here are a few pics. I bought it second hand but it's in great condition and has been very looked after by your's truly with setups by Martin at The Gallery. The current list price from Warwick is just over £4000 (€5,652.90 to be precise!!). Eek... Posting two for sale ads today and this is the first time I've done that on here so apologies if I'm doing it wrong...
17. Up for grabs is my beautiful Breedlove B350CB4 acoustic bass guitar. Bought in 2011 for a recording project but has had very little use ever since so it's time to move on... I spent an incredible amount of time researching all the various acoustic bass guitars out there and tried every one I could feasibly get my hands on before settling for this bass. It has a gorgeous piano-like tone when plugged in and unlike a lot of these instruments sounds pretty good acoustically with good projection. It has a lovely preamp with a handy built in tuner. It's a very well-constructed instrument and feels very sturdy. It's pretty much in the same condition as I bought it new with no dings or scratches. I'm including a decent gigabit and TWO spare sets of D'Addario Phosphor Bronze strings (worth at least £40 on their own) This is the first time I've posted in the classifieds so hopefully I've done it right and the pictures have uploaded properly! Am based in Peckham if you want to try it out. No trades on this one; need the cash to fund more gear! If you want to hear the bass in action, here's the solo album I made with it which features just this bass looped up http://music.simonli...lbum/un-plugged
18. Alphonso is such an underrated player. Have you heard the stuff he did with George Duke? Check out The Aura Will Prevail.. So funky!
19. I agree with the comment about making sure your strap is a comfortable length. If it's too high and you find your forearm resting along the edge of the bass too hard you are restricting the blood flow to your right hand. Your wrist will also be at an awkward angle which worsens the effects. Continuing playing like that can lead to carpel tunnel or tendinitis which is frankly no fun for anybody. Definitely worth getting a lesson to focus on technique before you do yourself a mischief...
20. I've got exactly the same problem with my Marcus Jazz Bass. In fact it is at The Gallery as I type getting a fretstone from Martin. A regular setup just wasn't cutting in and I was getting a lot of fret noise; especially up the dusty end as you described. I'm guessing we 're not the only ones having these issues..
21.
Fretboard comparison Maple VS rosewood https://youtu.be/cYhzjrRxAFU
These videos are fantastic! Great job guys The rosewood sounds so much better in this video but for some reason it's the opposite when I play myself. Got 3 Fenders, all with maple boards!
22. The vast majority of the effects have their own mix control within their own settings so it's rarely an issue. The overdrives can be a bit trickier but then the same usually applies with most overdrive pedals. The overdrives and distortions all have a 3-band EQ so you can make up some of the low end dropout there too...
23. I've recently ditched virtually all my individual pedals (I had a massive pedalboard for live!) and bought a Line 6 M9. I absolutely love it. It's the slightly scaled down version of the M13 which is massive and you can use three effects simultaneously, with two options set for each pedal (like having six pedals on a board with three available at once once). It's dead easy to use and saving scenes is so straightforward. The built in looper is also pretty nifty and runs alongside the effect bank although it is a faff switching between fx/loop modes if you want to change sounds whilst love looping. Quite happy to put up with that as the selection of sounds is just immense with loads of really useable combinations. It means that my big hefty pedalboard could be retired and replaced with a nifty little box that fits in my gig bag. Joy... I highly recommend trying these out if you see one...
