Selling my MXR M81 Bass Preamp. Lovely bit of kit but I used it very rarely; just for some home recording. It’s in excellent condition, good as new really. Has Velcro on the bottom and miraculously I still have the little stick on rubber feet if you like that sort of thing. No box but will be packed safely if you need it posting. Can be collected from Peckham SE15 or happy to post it (UK only) for £10

Seeking a brand new bass, try before I buy.

As many have said here already you’d really need to go to visit either The Gallery or Bass Direct. They’re the only places where you can realistically try a wide variety of instruments at all price points; both new and used. Seeking out various branches of PMT or Guitar Guitar would not prove particularly fruitful as neither of those chains stock that many basses and would only cover and handful of brands. If it were me I’d be straight down to The Gallery. Even all the way from Leicester. It’d be well worth the extra time -
I’d agree with @bremen. Instant extra bite and you don’t have to butcher your bass. Plus you can easily swap back to the flats when you do have your favourite amp setup.

Recommend me some modern (or not) music with upright bass
simonlittle replied to Dazed's topic in General Discussion
This whole album by The Cinematic Orchestra has some amazing upright bass playing by Phil France. Over twenty years ago now but still sounds fresh -
I’ll DM you his number right now 😎

Not sure where you’re based but I’ve been to the guy at JPF Amps in Denmark Street (same workshop as Stairway To Kevin). I can DM you his number if you’re in London. He’s fixed a couple of misbehaving pedals for me in the past.

'Melvin Pierce' - is this real or AI generated ???
simonlittle replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
Following this thread with great interest 🕵🏻♂️ Had a quick Google and it looks like he’s possibly a trumpet player from Atlanta. Why he’s churning out all that tat at such a rate is quite beyond me though. The videos are clearly a load of stock footage clips cobbled together. I’m sure if you really put your mind to it you could run off a stack of tunes exactly like this in a fairly short space of time as they’re all pretty generic, but what would be the end goal? Really not sure who this music is for?? -
@richh I’d imagine most good bows hold their value pretty well as long as they’re well-maintained. Antique bows will only go up in value…

Only happened a couple of times but one of them was quite a big show and it made life rather awkward! 😬

I used to have a PF500 which sounded great. The only issue was if I pushed it too hard it would go into some kind of standby mode, so I’d be a little cautious going with a less powerful version; especially if it’s driving two cabinets.

Having just switched from the CMD121P+NY121 to the newer MB58r cabs I can confirm they are significantly deeper! What used to fit easy in the car behind my upright bass is now a bit of a squeeze… sounds great though

@beanydcThese are the ones I use. Not sure whether they make this version specifically anymore but they’re great https://levysleathers.com/collections/leather-guitar-straps/products/signature-tri-glide-suede-series

I’ve always used all-suede straps on all my basses as it sticks to your clothes and never slips. Also can help with neck dive. Levy’s used to make some great ones.

I’m probably going to regret this, but I think it’s time to let this one go. This is the first Sandberg bass I bought. It was my main bass for a good few years and I did at least two tours with The Divine Comedy on it. It’s a TM4 in a gorgeous blackburst finish, and it’s one of the original jazz bass-style shapes from 2006, before they changed to the current design. It has a pau ferro fingerboard with no inlays, Delano pickups and the original preamp. Comes with the original Sandberg gig bag which is looking a bit tatty on the front (🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛) but is still perfectly serviceable. It sounds absolutely glorious and plays like butter. I usually played it in passive mode but the active preamp is excellent. There is a scratch on the back which you can see in the photos and a little tiny dent in the back of the neck which was never an issue. Apart from that it’s in fantastic condition for an 18 year old bass. The one downside is the weight. It’s pretty hefty. My luggage scales bring it somewhere between 4.75-5kg. Unfortunately my back doesn’t agree with me playing long shows with this bass anymore. My number one bass nowadays is a masterpiece aged TM4 that I had built for me a few years ago and that bass essentially usurped this one when it arrived so sadly it isn’t getting played anymore. You can hear/watch this bass in action! We did a very strange gig on French TV back in 2019 where we played the whole of the (then) new album Office Politics in an office. The bass comes though great in the recording… Not looking for any trades thanks. Collection from Peckham SE15 is preferred so you can try it out. Could also meet up somewhere in London if that helps. I don’t fancy posting it I’m afraid. Cheers! Simon

Selling my trusty JMJ Mustang bass after several years of excellent, if infrequent, service. Bought it used a few years ago from here and mainly used it for recording. It’s in great condition and comes with the extra black scratch plate and tags. Currently strung with some well played-in La Bella 760F-MUS strings and there’s also a set of some used D'Addario nickel rounds in there that I would swap over occasionally depending on the gig. It’s a fantastic sounding bass. Only selling as I’ve just bought a Wilcock bass that will cover the same ground. It’s in the Fender gig bag it came in which is looking rather sorry for itself (thanks to my three cats) but still does the job. Collection from Peckham SE15 preferred or could possibly meet up somewhere in London if necessary. Not after any trades thanks. Simon

Both setups have a good amount of low end punch; the 102 always felt a bit clearer in tone around the upper mids and above than my own setup but I loved the sound of the two 12” cabs together. Plus I play a lot of upright and that sounded better through the 12”s too

I’m not sure whether it’s because the tweeter is angled directly at you in the 102P but I would say it’s noticeably louder. I’m talking specifically about the combos with the Combo II heads here, couldn’t say with the more recent models. I regularly played through two 102P’s at two different venues and the hiss when nobody is playing was just plain annoying. Hence my comment about using it for home practice; that would drive me round the bend. However, once you’re playing the amp sounds fantastic. The CMD121P I had also had the hiss but it didn’t ever bother me to the same extent; but again, it didn’t have the tweeter pointing right in my ear..

I have the exact same bass, except mine is from 2013. One of the nicest basses I’ve ever had. Hope you enjoy it 👍

Hi @Dal I had the CMD121P and extension cab for years until recently and it was a very useful and versatile combination, and it sounds great for electric and upright bass. I’ve also played a lot of shows with the 102P combo as it’s the house amp at a couple of venues I play at regularly. I really do enjoy the sound of the 102P during a gig, but I think the hissy tweeter would get annoying very quickly if you were using it for practice at home. If it’s just for electric bass I’d say the 102P is a good choice. The angled cab means you can always hear yourself clearly on stage without being overly loud. If you also play upright, I’d go the other way with the 121P and extension. Good luck!
