2. Hey guys, just recorded a brand new video lesson for you! New video lesson >>> Grab your bass now! I really struggled with what to call this lesson... yes, it will improve you're soloing, but it will also enhance your fretboard knowledge, phrasing and a load of other stuff too. This is part 1 of a two part lesson. I'll be posting the part 2 next week so watch out for it! Over and out, Scott. New video lesson >>> Grab your bass now!
3. Lol... yeah... it was Miles D!... I didn't know that!... live and learn Daz... Yeah, if you could hear the chords underneath the tune it would probably a lot easier for you to hear it - maybe I should have done it along with a backing track... i'll keep it in mind for the future. here's Charlie Parker playing it for ya... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hANODMX9c5g Ez, Scott
4. Dudes and dudettes!... >>> New Bass Lesson Here's an awesome subdivision exercise for you. It was shown to me by an ex student of Charlie Haden's. When I started using this exercise within my practice time I found that it really helped me start to develop my internal pulse and time feel. This is part 1... part 2 will be coming soon... so keep a look out for it! Check it out>>> HERE Have a wicked day in the shed! Scott
5. Hey guys, One question I get all the time is 'how can I get great technique'? Obviously there are many different ways of working on your technique but by using 'study pieces' it can make it a little more musical than simply shedding up and down scales (which can also great be the way) So... I've put this lesson together for you where I discuss 'study pieces' and... show you a really cool one too! Check the lesson out by clicking HERE Over and out, Scott
6. Hey guys, It was inevitable lol... After putting nearly a 100 video lessons on Youtube (something like 20hrs worth of tutorials!), none of which covered slap bass at all... I've finally given in to the huge amount emails I've gotten over the last two years asking for some slap action! In this lesson I talk about and demonstrate correct right and left hand technique, and show you a killer groove at the same time. Now, hit this link to check it out!... Brand New Video Lesson. Over and out, Scott.
7. Hey there guys... I've just put a brand new video lesson together for you. In this lesson I demonstrate an absolutely KILLER chromatic style lick... then I show you how you can start to expand on this idea by just moving the shape around in a chromatic fashion. Hope you enjoy it! Check it out here... http://scottsbasslessons.com/awesome-chromatic-lick Over and out, Scott.
8. Hey guys, another lesson for ya! I'm sure you've been in a situation before where the bass your playing might not quite suit the 'vibe' of the song. You know what I mean... you wish you had a super modern tone for some songs and a vintage tone for others... This happens to me all the time... and in the heat of battle - theatre pits etc sometimes there's simply not enough time to start swopping basses etc! Well... In this new lesson I'll show you exactly how I get around this issue with a technique I use ALL the time. Check it out... http://scottsbasslessons.com/get-the-james-jamerson-vintage-bass-tone Over and out, Scott.
9. Hey guys - This is part 2 of my geometric shapes lesson. A couple of weeks ago I told you about a pro bass player I'd been helping out... When we met he was SO frustrated with his bass playing, as although he was a great reader and well-rounded technician, he was finding it really hard to come up with his own bass lines, grooves and runs etc. So, I showed him how you can apply different shapes to different sounds on the fretboard, and almost instantly he was 'cooking on gas'! In the last lesson I posted up, I took you through ALMOST all of what I taught him. However... because I didn't want to overload you with information, I left out what I like to call the 'SEXY' or 'JUICY' notes... I'm sure you've listened to a bass line before and suddenly there is a super 'juicy' note that pops out... and you say 'Wow, what the heck is that?' Well... In this new lesson I'll show you exactly what those notes are, and how you can use them in your own bass lines. Check it out... Brand New Video Lesson. Over and out, Scott.
10. Hey guys, time for another lesson... I'm on a roll at the moment lol! This week I was teaching a guy who was simply AMAZING at reading music... seriously... he could make music by reading the dead flies on your windshield! He's a professional bass player who mostly does theatre shows and musicals where reading music is an essential skill. But... he was really struggling with creating his own bass lines, grooves and fills. I sat down with him and chatted for a while about what the issue could be, and within a few minutes it was obvious... He was making the same old mistake many players do. In fact, in the past this is something I suffered from too. Here's a clue... It's all about geometric shapes... ... Geometric shapes!?? Yep... Take a look at the lesson HERE. PS. Within this new lesson I'm using a funky backing track that you can download from my website... details are on the video. Brand New Video Lesson. Over and out, Scott.
11. Hey guys, here's another video lesson for ya! This week a student came down for a lesson and he happened to be suffering from what SO many players have the same issue with...

He new his scales
He new his arpeggios
He practiced on a regular basis
So... everything should be plane sailing right?... Wrong! He just couldn't seem to use the information he'd practiced and learnt within a practical setting... a gig! You'd be surprised how many bass players suffer from the exact same problem... so you are not alone! To point you in the right direction I've put together a brand new video lesson... Check it out now by clicking 'HERE' Hope you enjoying it! Over and out, Scott.
12. Hey guys, This brand new video tutorial is probably 'THE' most important lesson I ever give to my students... I'm sure you've felt completely overwelmed by the amount of information you have to learn to become a great bass player... licks, scales, chords, grooves, soloing techniques etc etc... there seems to be SO much to learn and so little time to do it in... In the past I've definately suffered from this feeling. It felt like I was drowning in a huge sea of information and just couldn't figure out how I could learn everything I needed to. In this brand new video tutorial I tell you exactly how to stop this happening... You can check out the lesson... HERE. Over and out, Scott.
13. Hey guys, I had such a fantastic response, and more thank you emails than I could handle following my last 'Deconstructing The Groove' video tutorial that I decided to do another one! In this new video lesson I demonstrate a super funky groove that incorporates...

Root note displacement.
Use of the dominant 7th arpeggio within a groove.
Use on the Minor Pentatonic scale.
Use of hammer-ons and pull-offs.
It also has two great bass runs within the groove for you get into your own vocabulary... I deconstruct the entire bass line/groove and teach it to you step by step so you can get it under your fingers. Check it out by hitting the link... http://scottsbassles...ng-the-groove-2 Cheers Scott.
14. Hey guys, just did a tutorial on a funky bass groove over a C7 tonality. I demonstrate the groove and then deconstruct it into smaller parts to discuss exactly how I'm playing it. Check it out here... http://scottsbasslessons.com/bass-li...groove-c7.html Ezzzz, Scott
15. Nah - rest assured, it wasn't a plug Just wanted to give an example of what I was talking about. @faithless - Yeah it does sound a little synthy but within the mix I think you can kinda get away with it... also - I'm sucka for synth bass lol... I love it! Ez man, Scott
16. Hey guys, This isn't exactly an instructional lesson, it's more of a 'trick of the trade' kinda thing... but I wish someone had shown it to me years ago which I why I've put it under 'general instruction'. It's basically a little trick that will get you those low B's, C's and D's you've been lusting after even if you use a 4 string... with no D-tuner! Hope it helps... Check it out here... http://www.scottdevinemusic.com/how-to-make-your-4-string-sound-like-a-5-string Cheers, Scott
17. Hey guys, Dynamics a SOOO critical to the sound and feel of any bass line or solo. But - unfortunately it seems a lot of players out there just don't take it into consideration. In the past it's something I definitely suffered with! I've put this video lesson together to show you a great exercise I use with my own students. Check it here!... http://scottsbassles...t-hand-dynamics Hope you like it! Scott
18. Mike - awesome topic! Yeah it's a tough one... I'm gonna give it some thought and put it into a video lesson! Gonna have to hook up for that jam soon man! I REALLY wanna check your looping set up out! EZZZZZZ Scott

21. Hey guys, Loads of students that come through my doors want to play blazing solos up and down the neck. They know a good amount of scales and arpeggios but still, it seems like there's something not 'happening' when they try and use them in a soloing context. If you have ever felt like you have the same problem I really think this video tutorial I've put together will help you iron out some of those issues. Check it out here... http://scottsbassles...tance-of-melody Cheers, Scott.

24. Hey guys I just put up part 2 of the lesson. Check it out here - http://scottsbasslessons.com/walking-bass-beginner-lesson-2 Cheers, Scott.
25. Hi guys... it's been a while because I've had a heap of crap going on. Anyway - thought I better get back on it! Walking bass is something SOOO many bass players have difficulty with. But - It's really a lot easier than you think. Through years of teaching and experimenting with different methods I've come up with my own pretty much 'fool proof' method of getting students well on their way to becoming great at creating their own walking bass lines. In this walking bass lesson I show you how I actually teach my own personal students using this method and why they seem to be able to start creating there own walking bass lines much faster than most other students. That's why this lesson is great not only for student bassists but also bass teachers too. Try using this method with your students and you'll get great results. Also, I'm interested in hearing how other people teach walking bass, so please if you have any good exercises, ideas etc up your sleeve please share! This is 'Part 1' of a two part lesson so watch out for the next one in a couple of days http://scottsbasslessons.com/walking-bass-beginner-lesson-1 Cheers, Scott.
