1. Hey guys, I've put this video lesson together for you and I think you're going to really enjoy it! It's based on a specific bass lesson I took with Gary Willis when I was studying with him some years ago. Within it I discuss the soloing concepts he showed me during this lesson and there applications. This is part 1... part 2 is coming soon so watch out! You can watch it here... http://scottsbasslessons.com/the-gary-willis-approach-1 Ez, Scott.
2. Hey guys just put this new lesson together covering what triads are and how to start using them to create your own bass lines. Using triads is a great start to having a little bit more harmonic freedom on the bass so you're not stuck on the routes all day. Click the link... http://scottsbasslessons.com/using-triads-to-create-bass-lines Hope you like it! Ez, Scott.
3. Hey guys thanks for checking out the clip I posted up! I just checked out guitar players... there's plenty of them I used economy picking during a lot of that recording although I can alternate pick too. If you're not sure what economy picking is check this out...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yCxA4g-pDY I like using economy because it sounds a little smoother and the accents fall in different places than when alternating. The bass was an Overwater acoustic with a piezo, 33" scale and 16mm string spacing at the bridge. The strings are just regular electric strings. There's a pic of the bass below for you... Ez, Scott
4. I love messing around with pick playing... probably because I'm really into Steve swallow, Carles Benavent and Bobby vega lol! Anyway, here's a little demo I did for Overwater basses using a pick... http://snd.sc/x9Hf8X Ez, Scott
5. Hey guys, since the last video tutorial I put up I've had loads of emails asking about a specific lick I used at the end of the tutorial. It's actually something I stole from Gary Willis... yep, it's true, I'm a thief! Anyway, I thought I'd put together a video tutorial showing you guys exactly what the lick/pattern is. Check it out here... http://scottsbassles...pentatonic-lick Ezzzz, Scott.
6. Mate I couldn't find it I must have let a student borrow it... I've lost a lot of books that way lol S. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
7. Hey guys, I used to ask myself this question ALL the time... 'How do the great bassists move up and down the neck so seamlessly throughout the same tonality, groove or solo pattern without getting lost and wondering where the hell they are??? Well for my next lesson in my series of pentatonic tutorials I wanted to cover how to get this happening in your playing. Tip - It's about memorizing multiple positions for each tonality... sound tough but it's easier than you think. In this next tutorial I talk about how to start getting this down within your pentatonic scales... but this can applied to so much more. - Scales, arpeggios etc etc... The outcome.... You start to 'see' all of the options available over your entire fretboard. Check this tutorial out and find out what I'm talking about... http://scottsbassles...atonic-scales-4 Cheers guys! 11. Hi guys... Just recorded this new video lesson covering how you can start using pentatonic scales within your bass lines and runs. I find them really user friendly! Have a go yourself... 12. Hey guys, these are a questions I get asked SO much... What are the modes? How can I practice them? Is it not just the same as a major scale? ... And I can totally relate! They used to confuse me so much when I was younger... then suddenly, like a light switch turning on I was like... Ahhhh, that's what they are - that's how to practice them! So yes, all of the diatonic modes are built from the major scale - BUT each one has it's own sound and characteristics. To realize this and embed the sound within your musical memory you must treat them as there own entity. I've put this video lesson together to show you what I'm talking about. Hopefully you'll have the 'light switch moment' I had. Here's the lesson... http://scottsbasslessons.com/welcome-to-the-shed Thanks for checking it out! Ez, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com

14. Hey Lobematt, I've done three separate tutorials about soloing over static minor chords... Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn1gaK5PkoE Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8mcRHI0WYM Ez, Scott http://www.scottsbasslessons.com
15. Dude... Yep your right... Treat them as dominant 7th chords. Piece a cake! In fact a big problem for bass players while walking is trying to stick to many extensions in. If it's a 9th, 13th, #11 etc etc... don't feel like you need to hit them in your walking lines all the time... They are the extensions, so let the piano/guitar do their job and take care of them. If you were playing in a trio with no other harmony instruments you might want to reference them more often but don't worry about it too much - the soloist could do it Ez man, Scott. 18. Hey guys, It's been a while since I posted any lessons here... Basically because I've been rebuilding my lessons site http://www.scottsbasslessons.com So the good news... It's done, and I think it's WAY better! New navigation, dedicated instruction forum where you can post your own videos for interaction with me and others. I'd love you to check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks again, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
19. "How do I play faster!!!???" - I get asked this question A LOT by students. In these two tutorials I show you an easy exercise to help you start breaking your lines down in to bite size chunks, which in turn helps you learn the right physical movements to get the job done. Remember... The slower you go, the faster your brain will find and assign the correct movement program to your fingers. Slow at first, then little by little crank up the speed. Make sure you are VERY observant of what your right hand is doing. Here they are... http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-bass-lessons/technique/how-to-build-speed-and-accuracy-on-the-bass-part-1/ http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-bass-lessons/technique/how-to-build-speed-and-accuracy-on-the-bass-part-2/ Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
20. Hey Louis... thanks man! Makes it worth while when I know people are getting something from the lessons! Easy man, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
21. Hey guys, Posted a soloing/chord tone exercise last week and a lot of players seemed to get something from it, so.... I decided to do another tutorial based on chord tones. It's not an exercise specifically for soloing... it's for EVERYTHING bass lol! It'll help you with your bass lines, soloing, visualization of harmony on the fingerboard etc etc. Here it is... http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-bass-lessons/creating-bass-lines-and-grooves/chord-tone-exercise/ Thanks again for watching! Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
22. Thanks for checking them out guys! Lots of new ones on there way! Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
23. BottomE... Yeah you have to stick to the chord tones of which ever chord your playing at that moment. Faithless... I love the guide tone exercises, I used them a lot in the past. Philwood... Giant Steps... BOOM! Keep at it man!
24. Hey guys here's a little string skipping exercise to keep your right hand in shape... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga0k46ml5qM Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
