BottomE... Sorry for not replying mate... didn't see anybody had posted. Anyway... tips for beginning improv... Start with chord tones first because they the 'meat and potatoes' of any sound/harmony. The scale then fills in the missing gaps. For instance a C major 7 chord is C,E,G,B... if we add 3 more notes (D,F,A) we have a major scale. So any arpeggio is only three notes away from being a full scale. That's why it's good to start working on the arpeggio/chord tones first because they're are the 'foundation' notes of any chord. The Dmin/major7th arpeggio on a G7... first of all make sure you can improvise comfortably just using the G7... then try move onto the Dmin/major7th. Try and come up with one lick that really works over the G7... use it over and over until the sound of the substitution gets drilled into your subconscious... for instance when I listen to someone improvising i can hear when they use different substitutions because i've got 'the sound' fully absorbed in my ear. Then when you can 'hear' that one lick you've been playing for a few days start to try and come up with other melodies that work. Over the last few months I've been listening to a lot of solo guitar stuff and it's really inspired me to try and do something similar on bass. I've got so into it that i'm planning on recording and releasing an EP that will be made up entirely of solo arrangements of standards for the bass. This morning I was trying to plan out an arrangement of Autumn Leaves. Pretty much all of it's improvised although I did have an idea of the substitute chords I was going to try and throw in. I put a bit down on video but haven't recorded the entire arrangement... wanna keep it for the EP lol! It's recorded on my custom Overwater bass direct into the desk, no eq at all.
