1. Hey guys someone asked me earlier this week about constructing walking bass lines when you've got two chords per bar. So..... here's a tutorial on it! http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-ba...chords-per-bar/ There will also be a tutorial in the next few days covering how to walk on static minor chords. And another thing... if you go to my website http://www.scottsbasslessons.com there's a chance to get a exclusive video lesson from me covering 'How to approach practicing'. All the details are on the website. Hope your all well! Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 2.
Nice work as ever Scott - really enjoy your vids - though the downside I always feel like shedding straight after I watch them! Which right now isn't good as I'm knackered and it'll have to wait until tomorrow - anyway keep posting this stuff - I know it must be helping a lot of players out there - me included Cheers Mike
LOL! Cheers man - appreciated! Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 3. Hey guys, Just uploaded another soloing tutorial up onto youtube. Just demonstrating a simple major 7th type arpeggio lick to give players an insight into how to create lines using chord tones. I also give some tips on how to develop melodies and licks by using different rhythmic values. Tutorial... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO3gZP4s2QE Any questions you know what to do! Easy, Scott. 4.
Hey Scott Talking about soloing more generally – after 30 years of gigging I now find myself for the first time obliged to take a solo in the last song of the night! Bearing in mind that this is in a blues rock band and all I have to do is play something with a bit of impact that can grab people’s attention for 32 bars or so over a simple mid tempo groove in ‘E’ I have no problems at all playing runs or constructing lines, etc and have occasionally played ‘musical interlude’ type solos in the past, but I’m just not used to playing solos as part of a song – it doesn’t help that there two very strong soloists (guitar & keys) in the band! Any hints on how to get started?? Cheers – Pete
Wow, a groove in E... the worlds your oyster lol!!! Not sure where you are as a player but maybe start with a minor pentatonic/blues scale type thing... you'll have heard a lot of these types of melodies before so it should be easier for you to come up with some solo lines through familiarity to that sound. If you can't 'hear it' you'll struggle to play it. Maybe try singing some lines over an E vamp, then work out on the bass what you've been singing. And... don't feel ashamed of working something out to play. After you've done it at a few gigs you can start to alter it 'on the fly' and after a while you'll be improvising!! Good luck man, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 5. Hey guys, finally got around to doing part two of the 'crash course' in walking bass. As i said in the previous post - this is just to get you on your way... but it's a great way to start! *WATCH PART ONE BEFORE PART TWO IF YOU HAVEN"T ALREADY!!!* Part One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzfYIFTHLdo...feature=related Part Two - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm8mpwxGwWc Easy guys, http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 6. Hey guys just did another quick tutorial on Youtube showing a really easy II V I lick. In it i'm discussing the 7th to 3rd resolution over the II V - If you haven't heard of this check the tutorial out as it'll really help you out when making up your own lines. - There's whole books written on using the 7th - 3rd resolution with improvising! Check it out here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BVs6b2F_aY Hope you enjoy it. Easy, Scott. 7. Hey guys I just posted up a new tutorial on how to get 'up and running' with walking bass lines. They can be quite daunting to start with so i've got a few tips on here to help people out without having to get into the theory side too much. This technique works well with certain chord sequences but not so well with others, so i'll cover some other ideas in part 2. This is part 1 of a 2 part series, part 2 will come next week sometime. Part 1... http://scottsbasslessons.com/test-page-1/w...1-crash-course/ Also, it's on my brand lessons new site... hope you like it! I know NOTHING about website programming etc so i've had to bust my balls a little to get this together. There's a lot of new content going be added over the next few months so watch this space! Take it easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 8. Ok, i know this isn't a tutorial, but, thought i'd post it up anyway. It's just a short clip of me messing around over a Bb7 groove. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5dgdhU2RtY I talk about some of the techniques i'm using here... Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4HWd0MK21c Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGwu4Et4sAk...feature=related Part 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihtcJmcJlSQ...feature=related Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 9. Hey guys, this is a clip from one of my correspondence lessons. I was demonstrating using a tonal key centre (Bb) throughout the whole tune but adding in altered dominants and chromatics to spice things up. The tune I'm playing over is Autumn Leaves. Any questions gimme a shout. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNX3ou_rpEc You can use these types of techniques all over the place... the gag is hitting the right chord tones at the right time. If you don't do that it just sounds like your running up and down scales. 'All the things you are' is another great one to try this out on, but, the key centres do change so watch out Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 10. Hi guys, here's a little tutorial showing you a lick/melody that can be integrated into your soloing vocabulary to help you target chord tones. Any questions give me a shout Link... http://scottsbasslessons.co.uk/?page_id=567 Easy, Scott http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 11.
Yes, spot on. (I could be wrong but I think) the original line there descends the Dorian (i.e. major 6th), while you had the minor 6th from the Aeolian scale. Listening to the original again, I couldn't swear that they don't mix them up. I really liked your version. I thought the minor 6th was darker and somehow suited the whole thing better (maybe because of Tatiana's voice, maybe just something to do with the whole band sound). But I'm pretty suyre it's not the same as the original. Regards, Nick (Tall thin guy asking lots of questions at the Harrogate bass bash )
Hey Nick, sorry for taking aaaaages to get back to you. Anyhow, yeah your bang on. I just thought it sounded darker so thats why i put it in... no trade secrets lol! Hope your well, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 12.
Hey, Scott, how's MD'ing going, man? Nice to see it happening, I'm sure it's a great experience for ya... Cheers Laimis
MD'ing... Stressful lol! Before i was involved in MD'ing I always thought that it'd all be about the music/arranging etc... it's about SOOOO much more! Negotiating fee's/contracts/studio booking and negotiation/arranging rehearsals (trying to get 7 people in a rehearsal room for 4 days straight is tough when your using the best guys around... coz they're all really busy). I also did all the programming/sequences for this gig which i had to do in an insane amount of time... two weeks worth of work in 3 days basically = NO SLEEP lol! But... don't get me wrong, I absolutely, totally I love it!!! And.. feel so lucky to be involved in music and be able to make a living out of it. I wouldn't change it for the world. 2wheeler... Do you mean the sixth on the Am? Easy, Scott. Gives me a further insight beyond the demo you did at the Bass Bash in Harrogate.
I've got to be be utterly daft sometimes to keep me from going insane lol! A lot of the time things can get quite stressful due to various factors so I've just got keep relaxed and make sure I'm doing a great job and having a great time. Easy, Scott. 15.
Thanks Scott - really interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes. Shame you didn't get more rehearsal footage (the bits you did get sounded great) but I suppose you were meant to be playing rather than videoing! 'Lets dance' cover was spot on - never heard of Tatiana before but will check her website out. Neil
Hey Neil, your bang on! Rehearsals ended up being so intense that there just wasn't anytime to get anything recorded. Thanks for checking it out! Scott. 16. Hi guys, just been doing some rehearsals with platinum selling Polish artist Tatiana Okupnik for a BBC showcase over here in the UK. I recorded the rehearsals... and a lot of messing around to make a video diary type thing and thought you guys might wanna check it out. Here's the link to the video diary... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uaoyPNfcW0 There's also some decent footage of the showcase here, the sound quality is a bit rubbish but you get the idea... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtcopVco1GY...feature=related We also did a little warm up gig in Leeds. One of the tunes we were messing around with was 'Lets Dance' by David Bowie. We ended up putting a crazy latin bit in the middle of it just to break it up a little (3.40mins)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVU9WYzhmFo...feature=related Here's Tatiana doing a wicked version of big spender... 21. Hi guys, sorry its been aaaaages since i last posted, I've had a really heavy work load for the past few months so fitting in everything has been tough. Anyhow, i've just done a new video lesson (with my new camera - yipeeee!) on how to improve your swing feel with your walking bass lines. You can check it out here... http://scottsbasslessons.co.uk/?page_id=561 I've uploaded it onto my new site which at the minute is on http://www.scottsbasslessons.co.uk - *THIS SITE IS NOT FINISHED* (loads of info/pages missing etc) - but i thought i'd let you have a look at it so you can let me know if there's any problems loading it up etc. When it's finished in a few weeks it will be transferred over to http://www.scottsbasslessons.com which is where my old lessons site is at the moment. As always, if you've got any questions fire away! Easy, Scott. 23.
Hi Scott, First I'd like to say that I really like your video tutorials (I watch some again every so often in the hope that something will sink in,ha). Your structure for the new site is most what I would want, ie. technique/rhythm/improvisation/licks and language. I had started a thread earlier this year on how I should go about learning and that was basically what was touched on. But...for me while I can learn all these various 'concepts' and ideas, I have trouble making the step of how to make practical use of them, and make use of them 'musically'. For a beginner like myself, I know I need to know all these building blocks, but I can't make the mental connection of how to then build something worthwhile with them. Maybe I'm just daft and don't have an ounce of musical ability in my little toe. If I start out at point A, whats the next baby step to get to B and then C? As a novice all these concepts just exist in a vacuum and I can't connect them. Why is it for example that when I see a video of someone demonstrating the Dorian scale and soloing with it sounds 'musical', but when I try it sounds crap and just like random notes that 'fall' on a scale. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your efforts, appreciated.
Awesome Tandro - this is the kind of info i'm after! I can completely relate to what your saying. I can still remember learning a major scale myself and wondering how the hell to actually turn it into anything musical. This the kind of thing I'm going to be addressing within my 'licks and language' section of the website. Unfortunately the word or phrase 'licks' has a lot of bad press. A 'lick' in its simplest form is simply a musical phrase made up of connected notes just the same as a spoken word is made out of letters. Now, if I give a young child the alphabet they won't be able to construct words and sentences, it is simply 26 random letters - exactly the same as the major scale is to many people - 8 random notes. By demonstrating some standard 'licks' I will discuss how they are actually formed from the different scales or arpeggios and demonstrate how melodies are made from them. It is an essential part of learning an instrument to be able to play and understand other peoples 'licks' and melodies as in turn you will start to understand how the scale notes are used to make music. When we were infants we learned a language by listening to our parents. We then imitated them using maybe one or two words... mummy or mummy food. These words are just like 'licks'. Fast forward a few years and the child has a few hundred words which he/she can use to create sentences that help them connect, communicate and interact with others. If you apply the same principle to notes, scales and arpeggios it'll help you get a better understanding of what you need to work on to progress as a musician. Thanks for the interesting mail Tandro. JPS - I'll check out the Chuck Rainey thing for you. See if I can work it into anything. Cheers guys, Scott http://www.scottsbasslessosns.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 24. Hi guys, As you may or may not know I'm in the middle of a re-design and large expansion of my completely free bass lessons site (if you haven't seen it before - the old one is here for you to check out... http://www.scottsbasslessons.com). There's going to loads more tutorials for you to get your teeth into that I'm super excited about. At the moment I'm compiling lesson ideas that I'm about to get started (these will be better quality than the last ones - HD etc). There will be four distinct tutorial areas on the website... technique/rhythm/improvisation/licks and language. Basically i'd really like your input too. If you could post on here what you'd really like me to cover within the lessons and/or you feel what is missing out their or could be explained a little better it'll help me get an insight into what people are wanting. For instance i've had a few requests already for tune analysis, discussing how to approach certain standards etc. I'm not going to be demonstrating how to play certain bass lines from other peoples tunes, for that you need to check out http://www.playbassnow.com ... really really cool website! So don't ask me to do a video for the bass line from shaft ! Anyhoooo, as I said, your input would be great. Thanks in advance!! Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 25. Yeah, are you interested in splitting them? I'd be interested in the cab. Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
