My bass just won't cut through off the E string :(
bertbass replied to nickhuge's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had this problem with a new bass that I bought and whatever I tried, different amp, cabs, strings, graphic eqs, infact everything I could think of, it didn't make any difference. I went back to the old bass and it was all there again. I'm assuming that it was the light weight body of the new bass that was the problem. Can you try a different bass and see if it's still the same? Good luck. -
That's Corsa's half empty.

I've noticed that after a few years of being stored cone up, that'll come in handy one day, speaker cones do tend to sag downwards.

Difference between J & P chrome pup cover
bertbass replied to Roland Rock's topic in Accessories and Misc
I thought that the first thing bass players did when they got a new P or J bass was to take the ashtrays off, put them in a drawer and then lose them. I know I did. -
Neither have mine and they're coming to Hastings.

That's not right, there must still be something wrong with the speaker or the way it's mounted. If it was alright before and isn't now I'd take it back again.

Tried some of these, http://www.hotroxuk.com/matched-valves-links-page-12ax7-6l6-909-0/preamp-valves-12ax7-ecc82jj-groove-tube-12ax7m-1885-0/tung-sol-re-issue-12ax7-set-of-5-mesa-boogie-triaxis.html in my Mywatt 200. I did notice a difference. Not quite as much middle as the JJ ECC83s that it came with and I like that. Try this for NOS or new valves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMqJeIukXtE It's guitar but I could certainly hear the difference in tone and I guessed correctly.

Postman came and went, no strings yet. Oh well.

Identify this lump of cack - Never seen one of these before
bertbass replied to far0n's topic in Bass Guitars
My first bass was a Vox Clubman only a single pickup though and that had been changed to a Burns Trisonic pickup. Trouble was that the Burns was deeper than the Vox pickup and it passed right through the body so the previous owner had glued a bowl of wood on the back to cover up the hole. http://www.vintagegu...ass/Clubman.php The bass, a Linear 30 and a 2 x 12 home made cab with only one speaker working cost me £5 in 1964. -

Never had any problems with Gator Cases, it must be the luck of the draw. -
Valve Amp (Orange/Matamp) into a Barefaced Compact
bertbass replied to danweb22's topic in Amps and Cabs
Just to confuse you a bit more. Mywatt 200, It's a Hiwatt clone and seriously good. http://weber-amps.de/en/index.html -
Sorry, Been at the hospital since 07.45 with my lady who was having an op today. discreet, I have e-mailed you. What a jolly nice man Mr How is. I use Rotosounds on my 8 string bass but I have to be honest and say that this is because they are the only company I can find that sell an 8 string set although to be fair I have no complaint with them at all but I also have nothing to compare them with. I think a fair and honest appraisal is the least we can offer after such a generous offer

I've used Hiwatt 100s in the past and they're fantastic. I've just bought a Mywatt 200, http://weber-amps.de/en/index.html It's a Hiwatt DR201 replica. It uses 4 x KT88s and has a sound that is pure heaven. Very well made and from ordering to delivery was only 2 weeks and it's only half the price of a Hiwatt. Check out the link and have a look. There's also a lot of talk about them on the talkbass forums.

Reissue Mullards - Any one know / have experience of these?
bertbass replied to mattjones_81's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well the gig was not the greatest trial for and amp, community centre, high ceiling, wood floor and no sound absorbsion at all. I expect the echo is still going a day later. Audience loved it though and that's what matters. Did I forget to mention the neighbour in her bungalow next door who complained repeatedly about the volume and this was before we'd even set up or played anything and as usual people do what the one wants and not the 150 or so people who are there to enjoy themselves. Back to the new pre-amp valves. Took out the JJ ecc83s's and replaced them with the new Tung Sol re-issue 12AX7's. In the garage my amp, Mywatt 200, did sound slightly different in a nice way. At the start of the gig it was a bit difficult to tell if there was any difference at all. However, by the second set the sound was noticably improved, not that the sound was bad in the first place. Tighter bass and treble and less mid. I guess the valves needed to be played in. I'm looking forward to playing an acoustically better venue without a whinging neighbour. I began playing in the 60s and valve amps were all there were. Valves were only changed when they died and were replaced with whatever you could get your hands on. It never occured to anyone that valves had a 'sound' even if we did know about the sound of valves I certainly couldn't afford to experiment so it comes as a bit of a revelation that you can change the sound of an amp by just changing the valves but then again, all the valves back then were what is described as NOS today so perhaps there wasn't a difference after all as we used the best there were anyway. -

bertbass replied to mattjones_81's topic in Amps and Cabs
The valves turned up this morning, quick delivery as I only ordered them yesterday and I'm going to mess about in a bit in the garage changing valves and gig tonight. I'll post what I think tomorrow. -
Turn it down? Blasphemy!!! Why do you think Volume control to 11 was invented.

I'm awaiting delivery of some of these, http://www.hotroxuk.com/matched-valves-links-page-12ax7-6l6-909-0/preamp-valves-12ax7-ecc82jj-groove-tube-12ax7m-1885-0/tung-sol-re-issue-12ax7-set-of-5-mesa-boogie-triaxis.html They're supposed to be the dogs, I'll report what I think when I've tried them. I'm not sure about the 3D sound though. I wonder if they'll send me a free pair of special glasses, or should that be ears, to appreciate it. -
I've used these before, http://www.ernieball.co.uk/products/productdetail/Amp+Caster+Set+Deluxe+Pop-in+Socket/part_number=6102/574.1.4.3.56.23624.0.0.0?pp=8& and they work well. pull the castors out to use the cab, push them back in to move it.

I just use a normal, square, unshaped case and have done so for 40 odd years and never had a problem regardless of the shape of the bass. If you're worried about the bass moving around inside the case just use some foam. Our guitarist uses Hiscox shaped cases, he's lefthanded as well, and his cases are always falling over.

The December issue of BassGuitar Magazine had a review of a Hiwatt B150 and raved over it.

Do we convince ourselves that expensive strings sound better?
bertbass replied to morsefull's topic in Accessories and Misc
Apparently, there are only half a dozen or so string manufacturers in the whole world and they make all the different brandes of strings. -
Used to use RS66 but found the E a bit floppy and had an excess of overtones. I now use Elite Stadiums and am more than happy.
