1. I'm assuming this is a more technical question, so hopefully it's in the right section... I'm on the hunt for some fairly decent subs for our PA. We are not a loud band - folk/rock/pop with acoustic instruments (acoustic guitars, uke, mando', banjo, keys), but I'm now going through the PA rather than using my rig for our bass. Our tops are Yammy SV115's, we'll have a couple of Yammy P7000 amps and a DBX X-Over. My question is, Should I be getting 1 or 2 subs? As we don't need gut wrenching bass, would a couple of 15's be better than one (or two) 18's? I've been looking at the matching Yammy 118's and also the Peavey PV118 and the Beringers (both get good reviews). Any advice on anything about size, models, etc, would be gratefully recieved! Cheers. Chris
2. It sure is - just been playing through it about 10 minutes ago!
3. Thanks for giving this your consideration gents. I'll take your advice and run my own mix on Aux 2 and maybe use some sort of mild electrocution system to control keys. If anyone's interested, I have that Adaptear taped to a FiiO E11 headphone amp, so I have a wonderful hifi (wired) bodypack for £150. That drives my Westone UM1's perfectly. IEM on a budget!
4. Good point, yes, I'm using an Adaptear. Good money, works well.
5. I understand what you are saying, but I want to monitor FOH mix so I can poke the keys player when he forgets to turn down at the end of his solos! And because we dont have a sound guy, I like to monitor the FOH mix to make sure nothing has dropped out (we have several acoustic instruments and they can be a pain in the ass). I have a feed from my bass pre running into the IEM mixer so I can turn 'me' up independently of the FOH mix.
6. Quick question... If I wanted to send the FOH mix to Aux 2 so I can tweak the mix from my playing position (via my IEM mixer / headphone amp), should I have Aux 2 Pre Switch off and all the Aux 2 controls set to same levels? I've got a Yammy MG desk. Thanks very much. Chris
7. RMORRIS - this is incredibly helpful and coincidentally was supported by the book I was reading last night (the section was all about input signals and having non-contradictory EQ and gain structures across your gear). I'm going to take some time to carefully experiment with the equipment. Thank you.
8. Thanks gents, I've just found the block diagram and yes, the power amp is indeed after the master volume! You learn somethiong new every day. Cheers Chris
9. I'm trying to use an external preamp with my SVT-4 pro into the 'power amp in' jack. It works, but there is no way to control the volume on the SVT. Shouldnt the master volume control the power section? When I do this, the master volume doesnt do anything at all. Cheers Chris
10. For crying out loud, someone buy this. For the price of a VT Bass, you got the real deal, valves an' all! It sounds absolutely beautiful. Stick it in you amp's FX return for everything from middy clank to country thump.

12. I'm experimenting running my bass directly into the desk, via a DI box. At the desk, should I go into the 'XLR input' or the 'Line input'? Or does the DI box convert the line level to mic level so the XLR input can be used? The attached pic from my Yammy manual has confused me as it has a DI box into the line level input. My DI is a VT Bass Deluxe (from the manual)... XLR Out Pad Switch: -20dB pad to match the output to equipment with different input level requirements. In the line level (up) position, the output is 0dB. In the instrument level (down) position, the output is -20dB. We have a uke, mandolin, banjo and accoustic guitars, all going through DI boxes. Would it be the same for them? Thanks very much, Chris
13. I made my own fret pullers, bought some very cheap end cutters and ground them down to get the sharp edge needed. Took about 20 mins to defret the neck. I bought a feeler gauge and a small steel rule from amazon and some neck radius gauges from ebay. As long as you already have a selection of small screwdrivers and allen keys, you should be alright with that little lot! I do all my setups (and my mate's) with that small tool kit. Add a soldering iron and the world's your oyster! Books: How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great by Dan Erlwine (comes with a good DVD) and Haynes Fender Bass Manual by Paul Balmer have been invaluable.
14.
One benefit of running subs from an Aux send is that you can control which individual signals are sent to the sub and only send the channels that will benefit from that level of low frequency reinforcement. Can achieve a clearer and more focussed bottom end that way.
Very good point, little point sending the mandolin signal to the subs! That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the input everyone - I'll try one sub first too.
15. Good thinking, but no, they don't I'm afraid. We are using a little Yammy Stagepas 500 system as an amp and tops. Enough volume for the gigs we play, We feed that from our desk.
16. We are an acoustic band (3 x vox, acoustic guitars, uke, banjo, keys, un-mic’d drums and me on bass and EUB). We don’t play loud. After sounding a bit thin during our last gig, I’m looking to add some cheap active subs to our PA system. The subs I’m looking at have an adjustable cut off frequency. Could I just run them from a aux from the desk, turn the volumes up on the subs and control their volume from the desk using the aux slider until the right level of bass is achieved? Also, the sub cut off frequency range is 40 - 150Hz, and my tops have a frequency range of 55 Hz-20 kHz. How should I set the sub cut off or is it a ‘try it and see’ thing? Thanks Chris
17. I have a rack based rig – Line6 wireless into an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro. The amp has a GEQ that can be operated by a foot switch, I use this to tweak the EQ when I switch over to EUB for a couple of numbers. I love the amp tone and don’t want to change the character at all. The thing is, I need a couple more options. For half of our set, I drop the mids and for the other half I boost a bit. For both of these settings, I also want a clean boost for intros and solos. I have a programmable VT Bass pedal, but that coloursthings too much for my liking. If I put a programmable EQ pedal between by instrument and my amp, is that the correct place for it? So I’m EQing the signal going into the amp rather than inserting between pre and power stages? I’m looking at the Source Audio EQ pedal. Cheers for any advice, Chris
18. Happy St David's Day - treat yourself to a bunch of daffs, a Welsh Cake and an USA built SVP. Turn you amp into a thick'n'creamy Ampeg.
