1.
...then you either need to switch the ground as well as the hot connection...
Thanks so much for this, I've been trying to learn about ground loops all afternoon and what you say makes complete sense. The point you make about switching the ground too is something I considered this weekend, but didnt know if it was technically possible - I'm a total newb at this electronics lark - but learning fast.
2. Thanks gents. Weight is the major thing. A full 8U is a bugger to carry from the car! But I've been trying to solved a buzzing problem ALL weekend. I built a switchbox that lets me connect different pre amps to my poweramp (the power stage of a GB Shuttle 9.2). Pre No.1 is my Ampeg SVP Pro, No.2 is a Pod XT Pro. The Pod is quiet when switched, the SVP buzzes when switched, but stops buzzing if I unplug the Pod. I have both pre's going into my switchbox via a 2 channel hum destroyer. Without the hum destroyer, everything is unusable. The Pod is in its own 2U case, the rest of my gear is in a 6U. Grounding issues are a nightmare - that's a weekend I'll never get back and It's still not solved!
3. Would splitting my rig into a few smaller rack cases cause grounding issues? I'm thinking Furman, wireless in one case, Pre and amp in another, tuner and effects unit in a third. Cheers Chris
4. For sale is my Sansamp PSA 1 (better than the 1.1 apparently, and sought after in studios, before they filled them with cheap components). Made in the USA version No. 84611. Also, it's the very rare red face version - I've read that only 100 were made, but I've no idea if that's true. Hen's teeth 'tastic. This is every overdrive, distortion and fuzz you've ever wanted or will ever need. 100% analogue but with digital knobs with a resolution of 256 incremental steps. Grab a PDF of the manual here for full info. Great for everything, not just bass. You can tweak this for ever. 49 factory presets and 49 for you. Hell, you can even control it using a simple midi footswitch (no time lag) - works a treat live. We've used for bass (including amp modelling - great SVT emulation setting), guitar, crunching up drums and even vocal warming! For guitar, check out the Sansamp YouTube video: Sanasamp wordz... The SansAmp PSA-1 gives you access to specific tone-shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum. Controls of this nature are traditionally inaccessible on stock amps, and adjustments like these can ordinarily be achieved only by permanent professional modification. Tonality, for instance, can be adjusted in a variety of ways. The individual Character Controls, labeled Buzz, Punch, Crunch, and Drive, offer different results than the post EQ section (the controls labeled Low and High). The gain structure can be adjusted via the Pre-Amp control, which results in a different kind of overdrive than the Drive control. Additionally, Buzz, Punch, and Crunch each affect the gain structure within specific frequency bands. [s]£230 (posted), reduced - one just went on ebay for £230 posted![/s] GONE.
5.
Here we go... David
In the little hum reduction doodah [A] in this diagram, does it matter which way round the capacitor goes? Thanks Chris
6. Hmmm, interesting you should say that as I had an electrician in and he said that if I had an isolated spur, with it's own earth for my rig, that would help. Was he fibbing to me?
7. Yes, I think they do, mine hisses too, but not to bad. You'd know if you had a hum problem! As I mentioned, I pretty sure its an environmental thing - I tried mine in our practice room and I'm sure there was much less hum. My house electrics are pretty ancient.

Bought an SKB case from Mark - an absolute gent, great comm's, delivered rapidly - delighted with the case too. Thank you Mark, it's been a pleasure! Chris
9. Hope it works for you. When researching, some people say theirs is dead quiet, some complain - so it could be a 'building' thing? I was going to get an electrician in to put in a dedicated mains spur for my rig, but I think I'll save my money for the moment. I know it's best to fix the problem at source, but we are renovating the house next year anyway. Let us know if it works. It's a fantastic pre' when it's not buzzing!
10. It was some sort of grounding/ transformer hum, reduced a bit if I bypassed the last tube by coming out of the fx send, but then I couldn't use the EQ. It's a very common problem and the subject of many a thread on various sites. God knows I've read every damned one of 'em. Twice. Now I can use the preamp out, use the EQ and turn everything up with the hideous buzzing. Happy days..
11. I've had an SVP Pro for a while and resigned myself to the humming. There are a lot of complaints online about this - blinkin' nightmare. I was on the verge of getting rid of it and investing in an SVT Pro of some sort. I bought a cheap Behringer HD400 Hum Destroyer from Amazon, inserted in between the SVP and amp. It worked! Totally quiet and I mean totally. Just thought I'd share this in case this helps anyone else. I'm very, very happy today! Best 24 quid I've spent in a while.
12. Book (Books 1, 2 and 3 in one volume, comb binding with three CD's) and also DVD, as new, both for £17.00 posted. One page of the book has 2 lines of yellow highlighter pen and 3 letters written in red pen. Cheers Chris
13. [s]Teach me bass guitar - Roy Vogt DVD set Self paced instructional DVD's. 20 lessons over 10 DVD's. 16 hours of tuition. Very high quality production and tuition and a great online community too where Roy Vogt answers questions himself. I imported this from the US, so all the hassle with import duty and international postage is sorted for you. Yours for £80 delivered. 14. Price drop for Christmas Holidays - £200 for both, £165 for the Pod only.
15. Strapping up your stack No affiliation, just a shout out for a good service/product. I wanted a really heavy duty cam buckle strap to stop my rig toppling over when its on wheels (two 12" cabs and a 6U rack case). I searched high and low and found a seller on eBay called vblstitchcrafts who made me a custom length 8 metre long, 2 inch wide strap with a heavy duty cam buckle for £14.00. Great quality (I've bought some real crappy ones in the past). If you are in the market for one, check them out. Hope this helps someone. Cheers Chris
16. Bump for offers ladies and gentlemen? It's almost Christmas... treat yourself! I was playing with the SVT and Fliptop models last night. The SVT is so thick and lush I had to go and sit down and watch Antiques Roadshow.
17. I did the original planned mod today (put a rear input on), and it works without have to put a blank jack in front socket. Is that bad? Does that mean there is something wrong?
18. Amazing instruments - I've toyed with selling mine before in moments of desperation, but it's the one bass that has always been in my collection - and always will be. The neck is absolutely lovely to play. Good luck with the sale.
19. Thanks for that bremen. The guitars have pickups and the sound holes blocked with those rubber bungs - that helps quite a bit.
20. Thanks whizzzy - that looks like it could be the stuff. I'll have a run upto our local TLC now I know what to ask for!
21. What is that really nice, rubbery, heavy duty power flex you get on high quality power tools? I've got some on a blue Bosch jigsaw and I want some for my music gear. Almost feels like silicon and its really flexible with zero memory. Anyone know what it's called?
22. Does anyone have any advice on using the single knob compression on the Yamaha MG desks? Any idea where to start, setting wise, for vox? Also, if an acoustic guitarist isn't too good with dynamics, would it be ok to add some compression to his channel? Thanks Chris
23. Ah. We play folkabilly popgrass. With flatwounds. Does that make a difference ?
