Acoustic Image Clarus 1R series ii ... Price reduced to £200 Older model Acoustic Image amp includes: · Single channel but with high/low impedance input for those pesky piezos · Adjustable high pass or notch filter for rumbling feedback avoidance · Selectable reverb/echo effects for..... a slappy atmosphere (tbh works well but I've never used it) · Size around 26cmx23cmx6cm and includes a nice padded roksak bag....for hanging around in bars These have become the standard amp for double bass. In good condition and all working fine Having had some bad courier experiences so I would prefer not post – pickup from North Essex where you can try it out . or I'm happy to drive a bit to make a meet up possible.

For those who have had to use a backup bass, why?
haruki replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
Think the only time I've used the backup was was when a strap button off .... annoying -
fretless precision bitsa with status neck having a lie down....she doesn't get out much.

I got used to using a footstool on left leg when playing classical guitar. I occasionally use it for bass on my right leg when playing bass sitting- down esp for longer gigs - eg playing in a musical or some big band gigs

.. and how about Mikyung Sung.... (one of a number of great female classical double bass players) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_DFlW_AnkY&ab_channel=MikyungSung

Is it *wrong* to swap between French and German bows?
haruki replied to Jakester's topic in EUB and Double Bass
My experience was that when I started bowing I found German easier - it felt a more relaxed hand position and I could hold it for longer. Somebody told me its common for people who migrate from bass guitar to prefer German. My teacher used French bow and we got on fine.... But I kept trying the French bow - as it seemed better for quicker more agile passages- and after about 18m its sort of clicked and I could hold it for longer without it hurting. I now play with French bow in local orchestra and it just seems natural. So I'd say - go with what seems most comfortable to you... -
I did it once - just slapped the strings on and it seemed to work fine to my limited ears. Didn't change the nut. Hardest part was sourcing the right high C.

Alternatives to the Bass Bar (double bass stand)
haruki replied to gapiro's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Don't know if its relevant but that's lower than I normally use .... I have mine so the collar bit is about 10inches off the ground.... ...my issue has been knocking the bass on leg sometimes so I have bodged extra foam padding on two legs- unsightly but it works. -

yes Im surprised too...mine has been in use pretty much every day for past 3-4 years without a problem.... do you tend to (ahem) spread the legs out quite wide?? -

Barefaced Big Baby (Generation 1?) Price DROP £300 This is one of earlier Barefaced cabs – same size as the original 15” Compact but this one has 12” speaker and 6.5” mid-range unit. The nearest I can find on their websites is this for the Big Baby T which also has an additional tweeter. https://barefacedbass.com/product-range/big-baby.htm Size= 25.5" high x 19.5" wide x 13.5" deep (64cm x 48cm x 34cm). Weight = prob a tweeter less than 36 lbs Overall the cab is in good nick no major dents or scratches. Its covered in that bumpy cold scrotum effect paint that Barefaced used on their early cabs – seems to have lasted well. The handle is not in a good shape – still works but the rubber is coning away. I think Barefaced sell a replacement. Also got a roqsolid basic cover Sound wise it’s got a lovely smooth and rich bass and strong mids – IMO much nicer than the original compact that I used to have. It’s a great all round cab. Afraid its pickup only from N Essex – I can drive a bit to meet up if it helps.

I'm in a similar position - just started dabbling in cello - I need to get a few lessons. So far I've found the transition to tuning in fifths less painful than I expected. And those Bach suites that are so hard on the bass are easier on the cello (well left hand anyway). My tip is to buy a mute for practice. I find the cello quite loud and strident and when its played less than perfectly (ahem) it can be a challenge for loved ones , neighbours and the local cat population. I find a practice mute helps take the edge off......a bit...and its cheaper than sound proofing the room.

Just sold my musicman to bassofdeath. Very easy transaction, all went very smoothly good communication before meeting and we had an interesting chat.. Adam is a really nice guy to deal with.
-
Yep this was similar to my experience too except I got a Krivo. Recent post covid rehearsals have been in a boomy empty hall which created lots of feedback problems. But once I fitted the pickup it worked fine - its such a relief to plug in and turn up to a suitable volume. It sounds enough like a db to keep the rest of band happy.

Musicman Stingray 5 Purple and maple neck “Purple ray….Purple ray…” as the artist formerly know as etc might have sung. Having spent too much on a new old double bass I need to recoup some cash so having to let go my faithful Musicman . The serial number dates it to 2000. Its in funky purple with mirrored scratch plate – very disco. Its been a great workhorse – very reliable and good to play. It has a few chips and dings on the sides and the fretboard has the slightly grubby look that old maple boards acquire. But everything works fine and it sounds great. Usual 3 band eq. Comes with suitably well travelled hard case. Pickup from North Essex - I would rather not send but happy to meet up. ..and finally still life with purple bass (back) and letter from the council...
