You seem to be concentrating on VOLUME in order to be heard in your band. Any amp of 200+ Watts into a 4 ohm cab. will give you volume. Different sized drivers will affect the tone and "punchiness" of delivery. Too much bass lacks definition. Too much top end lacks weight. Balance is required, which is why people combine 2x10 or 4x10 plus 1x15 cabinets. Have you considered tone and clarity as aids to being heard? Apart from choice of gear, EQ settings have a massive influence on your ability to hear and be heard. I have a Peavey 210TX cabinet for sale on this board (£90) that has been used, on its own, with either a Peavey TMAX (350W) or a Hartke 3500 (350W) head, neither of which was ever cranked above 3/10. Always perfectly loud and clear (with appropriate EQ) with a very loud drummer, guitarist, and vocalist. Also, you will often be listening to yourself off-axis in relation to the speakers if you are close to the boxes, so the audience will hear a different sound to the one you hear. You need to experiment when sound-checking. Buying suitable gear off spec. is very difficult. As many others here have told (will tell) you, use your ears to decide what to buy.

Hello, Going by the name of JontyP. I'm originally from Lancashire, from Lancastrian/Irish/Yorkshire parents, but now live in t'yarkshire 'ills. Shhhhhh! Don't tell the neighbours, they haven't forgotten about the Wars of The Roses. Was seduced over the border by Timothy Taylor many years ago. I play acoustic and electric upright basses, also a good old Fender P, in two gigging trios. Preferences are original blues/jazz/rock, but happy to play other styles; except slap, 'cos I can't. Different bands require different kit; so, like many, I'm prone to the occasional attack of GAS (maybe that's down to Tim Taylor too?) in efforts to improve the quality of my sound - tone, headroom, tone, control & tone.
