You seem to be concentrating on VOLUME in order to be heard in your band. Any amp of 200+ Watts into a 4 ohm cab. will give you volume. Different sized drivers will affect the tone and "punchiness" of delivery. Too much bass lacks definition. Too much top end lacks weight. Balance is required, which is why people combine 2x10 or 4x10 plus 1x15 cabinets. Have you considered tone and clarity as aids to being heard? Apart from choice of gear, EQ settings have a massive influence on your ability to hear and be heard. I have a Peavey 210TX cabinet for sale on this board (£90) that has been used, on its own, with either a Peavey TMAX (350W) or a Hartke 3500 (350W) head, neither of which was ever cranked above 3/10. Always perfectly loud and clear (with appropriate EQ) with a very loud drummer, guitarist, and vocalist. Also, you will often be listening to yourself off-axis in relation to the speakers if you are close to the boxes, so the audience will hear a different sound to the one you hear. You need to experiment when sound-checking. Buying suitable gear off spec. is very difficult. As many others here have told (will tell) you, use your ears to decide what to buy.
i sent you a private message
Hello HiperiOn, I've PM'd you - nothing to do with Gordon Brown BTW. As several people have expressed interest, I'm dealing with them on a first come, first served basis. Rest assured that I will not disclose any information regarding anyone who may be interested. I will update the post as soon as the bass acquires a new owner. Regards, JP
Very tempted by this, to keep my fretted wal company. Will have a divorce to deal with if I don't sell some other gear first to finance it. Are you willing to indicate a ball park figure, so that I can enter negotiations with the wife. All the best Gary
Hello Gary, How are your negotiations proceeding? Regards, JP

JontyP replied to yorks5stringer's topic in Gigs
Hi Keith, Thanks for the invite, however I will be working on new material I need to learn for the trios I play with. Have a good 'un. Cheers, JP -
Mornin' Keith, I'm about half an hour north of Harrogate, 20 mins. sw of Ripon. Yes, TT's is from Keighley, cracking beer IMHO. Mr Bassman brought his Little Mark II when he came to look at my 4-string WAL; extraordinary little amp. Aren't trios are great for space? Thanks for the welcome. Cheers, JP

Hello, Going by the name of JontyP. I'm originally from Lancashire, from Lancastrian/Irish/Yorkshire parents, but now live in t'yarkshire 'ills. Shhhhhh! Don't tell the neighbours, they haven't forgotten about the Wars of The Roses. Was seduced over the border by Timothy Taylor many years ago. I play acoustic and electric upright basses, also a good old Fender P, in two gigging trios. Preferences are original blues/jazz/rock, but happy to play other styles; except slap, 'cos I can't. Different bands require different kit; so, like many, I'm prone to the occasional attack of GAS (maybe that's down to Tim Taylor too?) in efforts to improve the quality of my sound - tone, headroom, tone, control & tone. Anyway enough for the moment; glad to be here. Cheers, JP
Would be interested in the 2x10 cab if you would be willing to sell it seperately. Let me know of a price and if that would be ok. Easily pick up from yorkshire, im based in Liverpool, and could have it out of your hair by the weekend.
Thanks for the enquiry Steve, but I'd rather sell the gear as a job lot.
I'm a very indecisive person, I can't decide on an acoustic or an EUB, so I'm probably going to go for both, an acoustic now, and put a deposit on an EUB. EUB wise I'm going to go for either a Shuker http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/eub.htm or a Clifton http://www.cliftonbasses.co.uk/contact.html Acoustic wise I don't know, I seem to be spoiled for choice, but I know nothing really about them. Which of this bunch would be a good buy, I'm after one to learn on, but I don't really want to upgrade, so I'm after one that'll last me, I am and always will be primarily an electric bassist. http://www.djmmusic.com/items.asp?Cc=Doubl...tatus=1&Tp= Budget wise I don't really want to go above about £800. Thanks for your time.
Hi, As others have advised, £800 will not get a decent upright. I have a German carved double bass that cost £3500 plus another £800 to get sorted - new fingerboard, sound-post & tail-piece. I also play an early version of an English Paulman "Regia" EUB. Expect to pay around £2200. Hand-made by a double-bass luthier in Huddersfield. Web link:Paulman It plays exactly like a double bass, albeit with easier action, but identical strings & scale length. Sound-wise it's better amplified than the DB, much higher feedback threshold for example, easier to EQ. Records great. More robust than DB. Shorter (by about a foot). Less bulky. No sound post to fall down! Always admired - visually and sonically. HTH. JP
