Pretty straightforward and no-nonsense. Coil select 3-position switch, volume pot, tone pot.

This may seem obvious and a form of excuse, but, good grief, some gear just LOOKS mighty fine and you want it because you want to look at it with pride and joy.

Other than that, GAS comes from compensation of unfulfilled needs and/or lack of actual practice, like many wise Basschaters above mentioned.

Gold on a simple bass (PB, JB) in black or white (especially combined with rosewood, cream bound fretboards with block markers) is the killa. Kinda pimp-ish, but nonetheless classy.
Gold on cherry red also works, especially when it goes old and matte or even slightly corroded.

As long as the "vintage bass" is combined with "Japanese", it works. Don't ask, how or why, it just really works

I feel for you mate.

I know this feeling (but it never happened in front of audience, as I'm a home player): each time I'm given a new bass, I have a hard time adjusting and mess everything up. The only exceptions to this rule are narrow necked (MiJ/CiJ usually) P-Basses/Tele Basses and the late Ibanez JTKB200 which felt like crafted for me.

If they'd do a Jaguar-style bass, I'd be buying one right now.

I cecently looked at Ditto X2 by TC Electronic. That looks very promising.

Unfortunately, in Polish pawn shops they usually only have cr*ppy, finger-hurting basses made by Chinese corporations
I need to take a serious pawn shop stroll, though, maybe I'll get lucky

I usually play with only one (index) finger too and often use the middle finger only to mute the strings. And I play much faster with one finger than with two! But I can play with two, I just find using one finger more comfy. If a master like James Jamerson was playing skillfully with one finger, a peon like me can do it too.

We had a little jam at our workplace (perks of having an recording room) and while I was gone, my colleague recorded the bass.
Plugged into audio interface, picked, both PUs at full, tone fully open. Strung with GHS Precision Flatwounds.
