What are you listening to right now?
KingBollock replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
http://youtu.be/VZ2CgqaMJK8 I can't wait for the album! There's a proper video for it in this page. http://www.metal-hammer.de/video-audio/premieren/article470501/seht-das-neue-the-vision-bleak-video-the-wood-hag-zuerst-bei-uns.html -
I was working in a guitar shop right at the back end of the 80s, everyone banged on about how Trace Elliot stuff was the ultimate gear for a Bass player. Oddly the only Bass player working there was me and I had never tried any to have an opinion either way. The only good thing I can say about my hated Carlsboro Stingray head is that I swapped it with a mate for my first ever PC, a 286 that couldn't even do colour.

How dare people like a different kind of music than me!? It's disgraceful!

I really like the look of that. I'm glad they don't do it as fretless because then I'd be very, very tempted.
The neighbour whose lounge I can see usually has gentleman's fine art movies on
That reminds me of when I lived in a bedsit. The couple living in the room nextdoor knocked on my door, very excited to show me something... I got in there and there's porn on the telly... Turns out they were picking it up from the telly of the weird bloke who lived downstairs. I know that things that receive can often become low power repeat transmitters but I'd never seen it happen like that from a video player.

I must admit that on the rare occasions I actually see it I do get a bit caught up in the pointing and laughing at the crap ones that get angry when they're told they're crap. Mind you, they probably have a right to be kind of angry because they will have already passed an audition to even get to that point. Imagine finding out that the only reason they let you through to the live auditions is so that people can point and laugh at you.

What? No mention of Laney? Also, another vote for the dreaded (in the case of the Stingray at least) Carlsboro.
King bollocks. 90% of my bass playing (a percentage that increases annually) is testament to the fact that it worked for me.
I didn't say it wouldn't work, there's a very well recognised mechanism behind the way it works when it does. But there are other, cheaper/free, treatments that work using the same mechanism.
Think I might try acupuncture actually. It's the only thing barring steroid injection or surgery that I've not tried.
Save your money. I'm sure you can find other imaginary treatments for free that would be just as effective.

I almost suggested them but I am biased because just looking at one makes me be a little bit sick in the back of my mouth.

I had one of these for my first bass, got it in 1987. I loved that thing more than my own family, it was a very, very sad day when I had to sell it. It just screams 80s.
Isn't this the the dorkiest, most f***ing vile thing you've ever seen? Like a hippo with leprosy.
I always thought they were called whalebacks. I like the look of some of them, but not that one.

I'm going to have to go for a fender jazzes and those Pedulla (is that right?) ones that look like they were really expensively designed by an artist who just dropped globs of paint from a height. Oh and Ritters, even though I think they're lovely, they're still dorky.

PAT Testing. Why pay a certified professional?
KingBollock replied to coffee_king's topic in Repairs and Technical
I am in no way considering this, I'm just curious. I have some certificates in electronics from a 2 year college course I did 20 years ago. I can't remember what they were all for now, one of them was fault diagnosis and repair and another was for digital design, there were at least a couple of others, one of which I got a credit for, the others only had pass or fail options. I know to work on household electrics you're supposed to be qualified or something, whenever I am asked to do something for someone else I always just think if I ever got challenged I could just whip out my certificates to at least prove I'm not clueless. Would those qualifications be enough to do my own PAT testing? Assuming I did enough research to find out exactly what it involves. I remember my mate doing a 10 day course to learn how to repair washing machines and fridges and stuff, the electronics theory for it was very, very basic (and thanks to a teacher with a very thick Yorkshire accent my mate still pronounces ohms as orms), and he ended up setting himself up in business doing it. -
Does it really matter? Just because something is popular it doesn't automatically mean it is bad or lacking in any way. I like listening to early 90s "Pop" music, but since it is no longer popular can it still be considered "Pop"? Or is the title transient?

You couldn't sell many of these in East London. . .

I think the action might be buggered on mine, the frets are queefing. -
Modding -- Which Worked? Which Didn't?
KingBollock replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
The best mod I've ever done was splitting the coils in the humbuckers of my Dean Cadillac, massively increased the range of sounds I can get out of it. Other than that I only really "upgrade" anything if it needs replacing, and if I'm changing out the pots I replace the cap with an Orange Drop and add shielding. My Warlock, however, as soon as I pull my finger out I will be replacing the nut with a stainless steel one, though purely for aesthetics. And over the next couple of years I hope to add a J U Retro and replace the pick ups with DiMarzio DP127s, I have to confess to not being overly happy with the sound I get from the Warlock, the bridge pick up is particularly weak sounding, and I really like the look of the twin rail pick ups. -
I take it you have seen the rather horrible looking tear in the top right speaker cone?

Just played with a pick for the first time!
KingBollock replied to lefrash's topic in General Discussion
But surely a 3mm pick doesn't flex? Or does it? What I like about .50mm picks is the flexibility.
No, they don't. But the shape of the tip makes up for it. It makes them very versatile, from thumping along, with an almost finger style sound, to very, very fast to very delicate but without that scratchy sound you can get from a stiff, thinner pick that doesn't have a graduated tip. It's because you can hit the string with a thickness from almost zero to 3mm and anywhere inbetween. -

KingBollock replied to lefrash's topic in General Discussion
which (along with a twisted picking hand) is precisely why I use a pick instead of fingers 99% of the time. I always have, and while I do try to use fingers at times (with a sort of claw picking thumb & first two finger thing) moreoften than not I switch back because I have been using a pick so long I am just more fluent with it. Neither is right or wrong, but for me the pick is easier, so ... 3 mm Dunlop Big Stubbies for me, though I did pick up some Primetones at LBGS13 and really like the slightly softer tone they give.
Those Primetones look very interesting, I shall have to give them a try. I used the normal, lexan, 3mm Big Stubbies for many years, but I switched to the nylon version last year. The main thing I like about them over the lexan is that they last longer. -
How true. I use a pick exclusively. I just can't get the same level of accuracy, speed, control and dynamics playing fingerstyle.
Me too. I had only been playing for a year when I started playing with a pick. I did it mostly out of necessity from injury, I was a 13 year old lad and teaching myself to solder... Unfortunately, all these years later, I struggle a bit with traditional finger style on anything that isn't slow, which is a shame. So when I do choose to use my fingers I play it as I do a Banjo, I'm a lot quicker that way. If I had one piece of advice for people starting to use a pick, it would be: Don't forget how to use your fingers! -
I'm not a big vinyl fan, so don't have much and what I do have is mostly Motörhead. So I'm going to have to go for Motorhead's No Remorse with the leather sleeve, which I have on my wall, next to a 10" St Valentine's Day Massacre (I have the 7, 10 and 12 inch versions of that). My Motörhead Bomber album with the blue vinyl is pretty cool, too, and I'm quite fond of my white vinyl Iron Fist single. I don't think coloured vinyl is cool anymore, is it?

The Thirteen Dumbest Band Names in Rock History
KingBollock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I saw them a couple of times. Most memorable gig was them supporting Godflesh at the General Wolfe.
I don't suppose you remember a Coventry band called Sunset Rose? They were very different to Dirtbox, being more Hair Metal. I used to work with their guitarist and got on well with the rest of the band, yet I can't remember any of their surnames and I would love to see if I could find out what happened to them, especially the guitarist, Graham, he was incredibly talented.
