This is for the Warlock. The Cort isn't properly black, it has green, copper and red flecks in it. Should take one of the Warlock without the finger marks...

This is where having no money actually comes in handy, you really do have to make the most of what you have. I'm not saying I never get GAS but it's a limp thing with no teeth.

instrument cables all snarled up, any tips?
KingBollock replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
Something I like to do is dangle my cables from a height to allow them to untwist unimpeded. I'm fortunate enough to have a long drop, straight down, above our stairs that I use. But you could always hang them out a window, let them untwist and loop them as you gather them back up. If your cables are really bad and need to be warmed up, you could hang them out of the window in the sun for a few minutes before looping them back up. -
"Hey man, can you send me the tabs of this?"
Ha..! Just as I thought..! I can read the top stave, but not the lower section..! It must be me, I suppose; too old. I'll be keeping the pencil. (Thanks, just the same, I appreciate the effort...)
Yeah, when I used it I had to make a list of the drums that the numbers represent. But you get used to it pretty quickly. Shame I never actually got around to finishing what I was doing with it. -
Hmmm... Just wondering where drums comes into this. Not much tab available, as far as I know. If you want it transcribed (and it's very often necessary...), you plug in your ears and sharpen a pencil. Of course, playing it oneself after transcription is yet another phase, but tab is definitely not an option for drummers. Are we too musical..? Too 'classical'..? Just lucky..? No, we just learn to read drum scores, and that's it. No debate, really.
Drum score? I remember my brother's drum teacher using something that looked like tab, using different letters to represent each drum and cymbal. Last year I used the drum section of GuitarPro to get the drums from a track onto a drum machine, it used numbers to represent each drum. It was really handy. -
Yes. I very much have an attitude of "If you're going to do it, do it right". No half assed "There's a few mistakes in there, oh well ". You're playing somebody else's tune, dude, play it right, note for note, or add your own thing to it and make it better, but there's no point in leaving mistakes in it. I did it once, and i heard the mistake that many times, that when i listened to the song afterwards, for about a month, i expected to hear the mistake in the actual song.
Looks like I'm just going to have to accept that I'm not a proper bass player... However, I notice that some of those advocating only learning by ear are also those that say you don't have to play the tune as it is on the record, just play something close and it's good enough, the audience won't be able to tell anyway... So, are those people actually learning the tunes or not? -

I am terribly guilty I am afraid. Though not of actually asking anyone for tab. I remember in music class at school, I had been playing about 6 months and had only just switched from Art to Music. The teacher hit a note on the piano and asked me to play it. I said I couldn't, so he told me it was an F, and I looked at him blankly. He asked "How the bloody hell do you play all the stuff you do if you don't know the notes?" and I honestly couldn't tell him. Even now I struggle with working things out by ear. I usually start out with a tab and I know when a tab is wrong, but even then, if some of it is close, I can still get it. And while noodling about if I accidentally play something I recognise I can usually work the rest of the tune out without even having to listen to it. But if I sit down to work a tune out just by listening to it I really struggle, even after all these years. As for playing in bands. Throughout the time I did play with bands, I played a lot of songs that I had never even heard of, let alone taken the time to listen to them. The first proper band I was in the lead guitarist came to my house and spent an evening showing me the tunes they played, we went through about 15, including originals. I can still play most of them, 24 years later, even though I never even knew what some of them were called or who they were by. Fortunately most of the bands I played in subsequently played the same covers and wrote their own originals, so I managed to blag it. -

Perhaps he is perfectly happy with his business as it is? People have different ideas of what constitutes success, some people don't want to own all the money in the world, I can't imagine that he's poor. And perhaps he's just the kind of person that takes offence at people making inferior copies of his special and unique product and isn't the kind of person to just let it go and has enough money to throw at lawyers to make litigation his hobby? Probably because he can't get anyone to play golf with him. Perhaps he's just a bit of a knob, or wasn't breast fed or something? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps!

For the first 6 years I played in bands and loved it. Then things went tits up and for the last 19 years I have played on my own. I practice scales a bit and play along to music sometimes, but mostly I just make it up as I go along, occasionally with a drum machine. I love playing and don't need a band, though if the right band situation were to come up I would love to do it again.

If you like your pick ups to sit quite high you need very long springs, else they will rattle. I need to get around to replacing the springs in my Cort Flying V for that same reason.

I am a sucker for pretty, sparkly lights! I have all my gear set up in my music/computer room, so it is always there, ready to be played. The one thing that truly takes my breath away, still, is my BC Rich Warlock. I'd wanted one for over 20 years and was actually worried that I wouldn't like it once I got one, especially as I got it off EBay having never actually played one. But it is beautiful. Unfortunately the only stand that I have that it fits in, has the nasty habit of folding over forwards and smacking whatever it's holding into the ground, so it is hidden behind a guitar amp so that it can't fall forwards. Such a shame to hide such a lovely thing, but better than letting any damage come to it.

I think all those people, and there are many, that refuse to listen to Motorhead "because they have spent the last 30 years sounding exactly like their Ace of Spades era", because they have never actually listened to anything since then, would be surprised at what they have been doing and just how heavy they are. http://youtu.be/HXPHuT22yH4
How much heat are we talking? Use a soldering iron on frets to get them out, and the wood is happy enough.
Not sure to be honest, I shall have to check. One of the techniques involves an actual soldering iron with a metal pad where the bit should be. The other technique uses a heat gun like a hair drier.

LED side Fret Markers for dark stages .....??
KingBollock replied to Mark_ii's topic in General Discussion
Right, thank you. Can't even afford that right now, I've just learned that we need to replace our car's windscreen. As I don't play live at the moment (still love to believe that I might again one day) they aren't essencial. I have plans for the front of the fretboards on a couple of my Basses. I started a thread asking for advice, here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/201421-fretboard-decoration Any advice on those questions would be ace. -
For my Cort 5 string I am planning on getting some fretboard marker stickers. These ones: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PLAYING-CARD-WS-Fret-Markers-Inlay-Sticker-BASS-/150889397661?pt=Guitar&hash=item2321b57d9d Has anyone had any experience with them? Will they last or wear off really quickly? Also, the Cort is 35" scale, so they won't fit perfectly, would it be noticeable? Would it be a good idea to cover them with some kind of varnish? Which brings me onto my next thing... I want to do something on the fretboard of my Warlock. The first thing I need to do is get rid of all the current markers, but I don't want to cause any damage. I noticed that some stick on markers come with a pen to colour over the existing spots, I was thinking of using a CD pen because nothing will get that stuff off. My wife does a lot of crafty stuff... Erm, stuff with crafts, I mean. Including using foils. Most of the techniques involve heat, though, I imagine this would be a bad idea on a fretboard? She thinks she might have something that can do it cold, though. I was thinking of some kind of sexy girl silhouette in shiny silver on the 12th fret. But I know this stuff would come off easily. I know some people paint their fretboards, they must cover the paint with something, but what? What could I cover it with that would be perfectly clear, thin and hard wearing? Some kind of varnish or maybe epoxy? Any ideas would be ace, thanks.
Yep, I bought some from the seller in Japan 2 weeks ago and it also arrived in 4 days. Jas
Cool. How much did they cost? My brain is a bit addled lately and I haven't the wherewithal to work it out for myself. -
LED side Fret Markers for dark stages .....??
KingBollock replied to Mark_ii's topic in General Discussion
I am looking at getting some vinyl stickers for a couple of my Basses. One set will cover all the original dots, so they won't be a problem, but the other one I only want on the 12th fret and I'd like to black out the other dots so only the 12th fret is visible. What is the best way to get rid of them? The fretboard is ebony. I don't want to do anything that will damage the fretboard. I am considering just colouring them in with a permanent CD pen. Might try it with something less permanent to start with. Is it possible to get that Luminlay stuff from the UK? -

So the curse of the Bass player is to repeat the same thing over and over again...?

LED side Fret Markers for dark stages .....??
KingBollock replied to Mark_ii's topic in General Discussion
I think LEDS look ace and I would love to be able to afford to get them fitted to all my Basses, though only side markers, not on the front. I like the look of them on the from of others, I personally, like either a blank fretboard or a really fancy one. I am considering getting some vinyl markers, either playing card suits or mudflap girls. I am considering the FretFX, in blue, for my Warlock and Luminlay, in green, for my Cort. I didn't realise quite how much I relied on the side markers until I got my Aria and found myself struggling a bit when moving around a lot because the markers are tiny and barely stand out from the colour of the fretboard. If you're playing live and you ain't posing a bit, you probably ain't doing it properly...
