Bassist wanted for Melodic Death metal band in Nottingham
KingBollock replied to Dread Bass's topic in Bassists Wanted
Awww this is just the sort of thing I'd like right now. Why you be so bloody far away? -
One tip is to make a detailed sketch of what wires go to where. Even take photos if you can. If you have that information then as long as you don't destroy anything, then anything you do should be easily reversible. +1 for the leaded solder. I can't stand the lead free stuff, except for mending jewellery.

£1,000 for a Westwood Precision?
KingBollock replied to thebrig's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It looks like they're saying "We don't actually have any at the moment and it would be extremely inconvenient if you bought one right now. But... If you're prepared to pay a grand for it then I'm sure we can manage something...". The other day Johnston said something about it being cheaper for businesses to increase the price to stop people buying them than to take the listing down and re-list it later, or something. -
Dagnamit! If it lasted just 9 days longer I might have been able to convince 'er to let me get some strings (birthday coming up, though, technically, the Warlock was for my birthday) but they're £47. Still, should be able to get the straplocks and picks that I'm after.

The lost lost art of Country Bass CD
KingBollock replied to KingBollock's topic in Theory and Technique
Thank you for your very kind offer but I've actually found it now. I saw your post and started re-thinking about what could have happened to it. Then I remembered that I was using a different PC when I last used the CD, and, after rummaging around in the depths of the spare room, I found that old PC, plugged it in long enough to eject the CD tray and lo and behold there it was in all it's circular glory. Thank you, though, I am very grateful for you offer. People like you are the reason so many people love BassChat and call it home. EDIT: Got a bit gushy there because I'd mis-read your post and thought you'd offered to post it to me, but still, I'm chuffed anyway. -
I didn't know where to bloomin' well put this and this seemed as good a place as any... I have the Lost Art Of Country Bass book by Keith Rosier and reading about peoples practice routines on here made me think of getting it out again. Unfortunately I appear to have lost the CD for it, which is rather unlike me, but I have a feeling it may have gone missing when we last moved house. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew where I might be able to download the CD for free? I was really enjoying using the book and CD but, like I say, moving house got in the way and I lost track. Thanks

Now I really want to crack my Bodhran out again, but even more, my Tin Whistles. I inherited a new Clark Tin Whistle in C recently, which replaces the one I lost. I got a couple of Recorders too but I never learned to play Recorder, it's tempting now though.

I had a Vox Foundation 2x18 when I was a kid. I wish I still had it. I can't remember what it sounded like, and I'd probably refit it with a 15" and a couple of 10s, or something, but it looked lovely. It was the big one from this page: http://www.voxshowroom.com/catalogs/1971_p6.html I paid £20 for it and it came with a 30m lead.

As a bass player you can have one type of guitar- what would it be

I already have an Electric, Acoustic, Electro-Acousitc, Classical and Banjo. So which would I give up? Argh! I don't bloomin know. I suppose, if I'm honest, I use the Electric more than the others and even have plans to buy another. -
Can I just point out that there are a lot of Acronyms flying about here and I don't know any of them! There should be a glossary! TIMMIE!
I can normally work them out but TIM was doing my head in a bit, I figured it was some kind of in-joke and I've almost asked about it myself a few times. Glad Neepheid linked to it's origins. -
clearly a lady of discerning taste did you say cort? cort? what on earth is that ??? surely not in the same sentence as yamaha?
There's nothing wrong with a good Cort!

I don't think mine would be different enough to warrant a second amp, I would merely select a different patch. But then the amp I practice with in my home has a 350w amp (with it's current speaker configuration, it can go up to 500w) and a 4x10 and a 1x15, and an effects unit/amp/speaker modeller. So basically a live rig, even though I don't play live... I have the amp's preamp set the same pretty much all the time and use the effects unit/modeller to change the way it sounds for different styles or situations. It works for me.

I've only got one more to add but as I am happy with what I've got now, and unlikely to be adding to it, I shall put the full list up, as short as it is. [s]Westone Raider I[/s] [s]Satellite P Bass[/s] Westfield Small Body Aria Pro II MAB 20/5 Cort T-35 B.C. Rich Warlock NT -

I never sign up for anything if I can help it. I actually have 3 different email accounts and check them a couple of times a month at most. And then it's just Science Magazine updates that I never bother to read. I'm not the most sociable person on the planet.

I voted for 16khz but then I actually went through them all and realised that after 16khz there's a definite drop but the only one that I can't hear at all is 22khz. Not bad for a 36 year old then.
I had a 5 String Warlock NT and Mockingbird NT from the same series. The neck angles on both were so wrong, couldn't get a low action at all. I had to get the bridges routed into the body to get a decent action. I imagine the guy stripped the nut trying to sort a problem that was the manufacturers in the first place.
The nut isn't stripped, it just looks like it is. It can be turned but it is awkward. I'm going to take it to someone who will hopefully have the right tools to turn it. In this case it isn't the neck angle that is wrong, it's pretty straight, the problem is that the fretboard sits only 5mm proud of the body, where on my other Basses it is 10mm. I fear that there isn't that much relief to be taken out of the neck, though, certainly not enough to fix the problem. I have to say that I don't fancy having the body routed because the bridge isn't all that thick and there would need to be extra space routed behind it to be able to get the strings in easily. Which means refinishing that area or lining it with half a shallow metal dish. If, once the neck has been sorted properly, there is still the same problem, I believe that taking material away from under the sleds (I keep calling them sleds but I don't know what they are actually called, they are the sliders that the saddles sit in) and from under the saddles. I would only need to take a couple of millimeters from under each part, which would compensate for the fretboard's lack of height from the body, and if I were to completely cock it up a replacement bridge is only £20. You would have thought, with it being a neck-through, they would have taken extra care to get this sort of thing right, which is why, along with some of the advice from here, I am doubting myself, so I will take it to someone before I do anything. I have set-up Basses before and have even come across the same problem, where the neck is almost flat and the bridge sits too high and can't be lowered any more, in that case I shimmed the neck and it was fine.

I have tried it but the non bendable part is 2cm too long. Another problem is that I don't have a Hex bit that will fit, I have 5mm or 6mm but not 5.5mm, I only have an allen key in 5.5mm. My current plan is to leave it alone until I can show it to a pro. I have been to Crane's in Swansea before, so if the chap in the shop around the corner can't recommend anyone closer, I shall go there.

Thanks Johnston, the ball ended allen key does seem like the best idea so far. I have normal allen keys but... I have put the truss rod cover back on now (less likely to mess about with it) so I can't take photos, so I've knocked up a crappy little diagram to show my problem: The black lines are the Bass and the outline of the truss rod recess. The red in each diagram is what I can do, the green is what I wish I could do but can't as you can see by the way it clashes with the black lines. Hopefully that will explain things better then I have been able to in just words. Though it's probably just going to add a whole new level of confusion...
