Chris Squires telecaster bass?
stevebasshead replied to beerdragon's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The bass has changed a bit since the included photo of him playing it !!! I can't imagine Mr Squire is short of a bob or two so can only think he flogged it because he thought it was crap! It's always a prudent thought when browsing ex-name basses!
Ah but he didn't sell it, it was stolen from him and he wants it back. He talks about it on the commentary he did for the re-release of his solo album Fish Out of Water. The RickResource forum have been discussing the apparent re-emergence of the bass.
Chris Squire is the only original member? Loose talk for a band that hasn't played live together in four years and even so, wasn't Jon Anderson still fronting them then? That said, the last Yes incarnation featured a line up that you can date back nearly forty years. Personally, I've never seen him with anything other than a Rickenbacker. P
"Original" is probably a bad choice of words, he's the only member who's been in all the incarnations over the years. Yes are still active and were even due to tour this year for their 40th anniversary but had to cancel when Jon Anderson fell ill. Almost the classic lineup but with (IIRC) Adam Wakeman on keys instead of Rick. Chris also records with and often plays live with a Lakland JB, a P, an 8-string Ranney and a short scale Electra plus a few others including a couple of Mike Tobias basses, a 5-er and an extended scale 4. I know what you mean about seeing him with Rick's mostly but he's used various basses on recordings pretty much since day 1. He just sounds like him no matter what he plays. Steve. -
Hummmmn not thought of PTFE --- Might work.... Certainly worth a try if you have some lying around.
Worked a treat on my strap button that otherwise worked loose at every gig. OK, that was metal into wood whereas the saddle will be metal into metal but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't provide enough resistance either through friction or extra diameter. Easiest fix in the world

Buying From somenone new to the Forum
stevebasshead replied to PauBass's topic in General Discussion
I think the eBay idea sounds good - stick it on with a BIN and a bizarre description that no one else could find (so that no one else beats you to the item!!) and then you've got a decent amount of protection. Alternatively, is there a Glasgow music shop who could act as middleman on the offchance the seller isn't comfortable with a BCer in that capacity? OK, they might want a small cut but it would be safe for both parties and worth a few quid to be safe. <edited for spelling> -
We've played two Christenings (who books an indie-rock band for Christenings?) both of which went down a storm. We got the 2nd one as a result of the 1st and it looks like we'll get at least a wedding booking as a result of the 2nd one. There was also a gig which I should probably explain! We set up in a larg-ish, smart-ish pub and thought nothing of the crowd off to the left who were well dressed. Played the first set and ended with one of our own songs in which we encourage the audience to sing along to the chorus line "Burn them and spit upon the ashes".... You've probably guessed that the well dressed crowd were a funeral party just back from a cremation! We honestly didn't know and they took it remarkably well and were up dancing for the entire 2nd set. They asked us to dedicate a song to the recently departed lady too, so we did Time of Your Life and changed the words to Time of HER Life which had all the girls bubbling (in a good way) as you might expect.

Wow, nope never had anything like this. I wonder if it's randomly generated of if it's a reward for more regular users?

Best Live vocal mic for NOT picking up the backline
stevebasshead replied to stevebasshead's topic in Accessories and Misc
Did you ever settle on one Steve? What was the outcome?
Aye well, there I was gathering info from all you good people so I could give him some options and in the meantime he went and bought an SM58 beta wireless. It's a good mic and supercardioid (I think) and he seems happy with it. Thanks again for all your suggestions. Steve. -
I too can get frustrated by people's gullibility but nonetheless, we're a better community/society/species if we help when we can and hopefully make it less worthwhile for certain elements to attempt to rip others off. The sooner dubious listings get queried with eBay the sooner they can investigate and where necessary pull auctions which can only benefit eBay AND genuine buyers and sellers.

Could be worth getting this moved to the Repairs and Technical Issues forum? Or drop a PM to Dave Hall (DHA) and ask where he gets his etched?

You fools!!! You shoulda clicked buy-it-now when you had the chance, now it's £70,000. Kicking yourselves now, aren't you? How high to tune before risking breaking a string?
stevebasshead replied to stevebasshead's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cheers, I should be fine as it's just now and again for one particular song. -
I think most people on here would recommend Bassic Cables (made by our very own OBBM). They're handmade to your specifications and are extremely reliable. As for headphones - I've been using AKG K-55s to practice with now for over a year and they've been consistently great. The low frequencies don't lose any oomph which is a definite necessity for most bassists I'd imagine! Hope this helps, Danny
+1. Dave (OBBM) got a great write up in the current issue of Bass Guitar Magazine too. I've already got 2 speaker and 2 instrument cables from him and can say from experience they're well made from top quality components and very fairly priced. The speaker cables in particular were a definite step up sound-wise from the shop bought ones I'd been using. Buy with confidence

How high to tune before risking breaking a string?
stevebasshead replied to stevebasshead's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sounds like I'll be OK as I'm only going up a whole tone. Thanks for the replies all, much appreciated. My mind is now officially at rest -_- -
How high to tune before risking breaking a string?
stevebasshead replied to stevebasshead's topic in Repairs and Technical
The G is a 45 (it's the only string I'll be tuning upwards, so the only one I'm worried about) Cheers -
I need to use a different tuning on a song and it means I need to tune the G string up a whole tone to get one particular note. I don't think just one tone's worth of extra tension will cause the string problems but does anyone know for sure? I don't slap'n'pop, and for the song in question I'll be playing fingerstyle so the string won't be under severe stress from a playing perspective. I'm only worrying because one of only two times I've ever snapped a string was when I was restringing and tuned the G by ear and, unusually for me/my ears, was way off and --poing-- Thing is, I don't know how far off I was 'cos it had snapped so it was too late to find out! Thanks in advance.
The Hercules stands are excellent and because they grab under the headstock and hang the guitar on the stand, you don't have to be too concerned about body shape. Cheap? Depends on what you call cheap - 20 quid should get you one from most guitar shops
+1 for Hercules. Properly good stands. One caveat though - don't let anyone else put your bass on the stand, or at least watch them like a hawk!! Two different people have picked my bass up off one and when they put it back they've balanced it precariously against the grabber instead of slotting the headstock end of the neck into it. First time was in a recording studio - we'd gone for lunch and when I came back there it was perched and waiting for the tiniest of nudges. The studio engineer had obviously had a go on my bass while I was at lunch and the numpty had obviously thought that some sort of magical field held the bass on it. You'd think someone in a studio would be a bit more clued up in handling instruments
actually, you don't need to replace it entirely. take out all the other boards so you can get to the circuit board with the switch on it, and IIRC you just need to pop open the top of the switch, clean the contacts, and bend out the little springy bit so it presses more firmly against the contacts. i did it about 3 years ago though so that may be a little off......
Brilliant, I'll give that a try first. Thanks!
-
You probably know already but just to cover it, you'll need to tweak the truss rod as well because the overall tension on the neck will change when you use the B-E-A-D strings from a 5-string set.
i think he means the footswitch, they're sometimes pretty dodgy unless you clean them out like i did on the one i just sold.
Yep, the microswitch can glitch out. They've sorted it on the recent models but older one's can suffer. I bought mine in 2001 or 02 and the switch is knackered. One of these days I'll get round to replacing it. Decent pedal.
Haha well I think I will try this new approach next time. Now what can I sell? I found the box for the keyboard the other day if you would like it, plenty of room in that for filthy unmentionables.
Let me think about it
-
Offering used undergarments as a free giveaway is obviously a new sales ploy that works. Not sure I like this new development though and I'm really glad I bought your midi keyboard from you before this practice became widespread!!

I was searching for Boss fx when I found this quite by accident. The last line of her description is a killer! mini-micro Geordie bass bash postponed
stevebasshead replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
...BTW I hear you are helping the lads out and filling in for the gig I couldn't do, nice one...
Hi John, yep I'm depping at the Fat Ox gig on the 23rd, I hope I can do you and the lads justice! I'm looking forward to it, some of the set is the same as Diablo's, others I've played a few years back and the grey matter still has tenuous links to them, and the rest are new to me. RHCP's "By The Way" intro will be an interesting test for my fingers up the dusty end of my bass! Got it all worked out, no probs, even the odd tuning to get that very last chord but 10% of the time I get my fingers on top of each other More practice...
...Are you gigging with Diablo this week/weekend?...
Not this weekend, we had to cancel unfortunately for an operation at short notice - health comes first of course. We'll be back on the 9th at The Star on Westgate Rd. Great place, even though the parking/unloading is such a pain! When's your new duo gigging and what sort of material are you doing? -
mini-micro Geordie bass bash postponed
stevebasshead replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
I'd be up for this assuming I'm free on whatever day you settle on. I can bring a Tech Soundsystems 2x12, Ampeg SVP-Pro, DHA Dual Rackmount, Ric 4003 (stock), Ric 4003 (w/60s pickups/electronics) and a TE T-Bass (w/Seymour Duncan Jazz and MM pickups/preamp). I'm also waiting on Dave Hall to finish off my all-valve VT5 amp (12AX7's plus an EL90 power valve) so if that comes in time I can bring that too, would be a great opportunity to put it through it's paces. Regards, Steve. -
Recommendations for a mini-mixer
stevebasshead replied to warwickhunt's topic in Accessories and Misc
I use one of these to mix the output from two preamps before sending to a poweramp (for my Ric which I run in stereo) http://www.hartnollguitars.co.uk/products.asp?id=1699 It's about as basic as it gets but the sound quality is fine and it does the job for very simple mixing. I don't know if it'll be too simple for what you describe but as a 4-channel submixer it's excellent vfm. Regards, Steve.
