1.
Well, that stops me thinking about it!
+1 add me to the list!
 2.
Colin Greenwood of Radiohead anyone?
+1 big fan of Colin.
 3.
Thanks man. Best place to get him is to PM him on SOS forums. I'd have to speak to him before giving out his personal details (and he's like bloody Willo the Wisp!) I know he is very busy at the moment so make sure you book early. (though as you know he is also in Oxford so he may squeeze in a 'homer'!)
Many thanks for the info - I'll seek him out on SOS... Yes - it's ideal that he's an Oxford dude.
 4. I know there's someone out there who can make this into a very cool amp! Having the voltage conversion to UK mains done properly by Steve Rowse (brand new power supply, transformer, etc) + expert restoration work on the pre-amp cost me £150. So that's all I'm after for the amp - £150 (or that approximate value against a trade/px). I think that's very fair. As you'd then be getting the amp itself for FREE!
 5.
I wish (as that would have saved me a fortune! ) Max Hodges is the designer and project manager.
Thanks for the great posting - looking forward to watching this as it progresses... And could you please PM with contact details for Max Hodges as I'm looking to build my own studio at home later in the year? Thanks!
 6. PM replied to Sean...
 7. Really need this to go - just because I desperately need the space (house move on the cards soon) - willing to listen to any offers at all...! Thanks!
 8.
Why the FLIP do I have GAS for a Jazz???
That's got to be the nicest looking Mocha Jazz I've ever seen! Maybe that's why? It's certainly got my GAS going as well - & I've already got 3 Jazz basses...!
 9.
if it still will be here any chance you could send the CD's? Regards
If I bin the mags & you'll pay the postage then I could that. BUt I may possibly be going mountain biking in Cwmcarn again sometime soon (go past Cardiff on way) - if there's room in the motor I'll see if I can sort something out. Would be a shame to bin them all...
 10.
Chester at the moment, when at uni I am in Sheffield though, not exactly close.
What a shame. If I am going in that direction in the next few weeks (& they haven't gone to the tip) then I'll try & sort something out...
 11.
Ooooh, how does the Kern sound?
It totally lives up to it's mythical reputation - gives a huge ear full of fat valve tone & harmonics. From vintage Fender through to high-end modern stuff - it just sounds stunning. I took mine along for a demo of Berg cabs & all sorts of basses at Bass Direct (a great place) & Mark was freaked out by it. He's been trying to get them to make some more for him for some time now - but I think he's given up as the guy has retired I think(?). There will be no more made... I use it for recording mostly (it's all hand made & very quiet) - but have been known to run it out into my vintage Ampeg B-15 for an orgy of valve goodness!
 12.
If only I lived nearer!
Where do you live? Would be a shame to see them all go to waste - but they're on the verge of going to the tip for recycling as I need to free up some storage space...
 13.
Seems on the low side of normal @ £430. I'd have bid but no gear fund at all atm
Yes that looked like a good price - & I was so VERY tempted to jump in at the end... But as I already have an Kern IP-777 (and an Avalon U5) it would have been a bit mad to have got yet another high-end pre-amp. I need to sell some bits before I keeping on buying more gear!
 14.
That post by Teej is about the most sensible thing I've read this year. Kudos to him.
+100 on that. Excellent post by Teej.
 15. BUMP for offers & trades... Anything & everything considered! Thanks.
 16.
To be fair, the current 'DIY, shop it around' approach isn't entirely new / revolutionary. In 1968, Jimmy Page and Peter Grant put up about £2,500 of their own cash to record the first Zep album while touring the outfit as 'The New Yardbirds'. Grant used the tapes to close a five album, £200,000 deal with Atlantic at a previously unheard of royalty rate, while retaining complete artistic control, including album covers and marketing approval. That would be about £25k and £2,056,000 today. Either way, the old adage holds true. Find out what people want then sell it to them on your terms. Long live the independent approach
One of the best/most successful examples of the DIY approach is Marillion.
 17.
Too true. A guy I know's band got offered a deal a while ago and apparently it broke down to something like this: They give you so many thousand for equipment and recording etc as a loan They do this with about 10 bands Once the records are made they'll promote maybe 1 or 2 of them and do nothing for the others They drop whoever doesn't come up with the goods This then leaves the majority in the position of no record deal and thousands of pounds worth of debt. Not to mention the whole idea of pay to play. I was reading an interview which said back in the day you used to pay $150K to get onto the Ozzfest tour. Crazy amount of money. It seems it isn't worth being in a major nowadays unless you're already in a well established and big band (U2, Coldplay etc). Bah. That said though, does anyone have info on how the indie labels operate?
This is an infamous article by Steve Albini on the debt that can so easily pile up- makes very interesting/depressing reading...
 18.
No. Bands are a pain to the music business because they have to talk to, and get agreement from, several people. As a general rule the labels only want to deal with one person. If you have a singer with a good voice who writes he'll get signed and you won't. Your P45 will be in the post. But if he doesn't fit the current look or "shape" he won't get signed either. Of course some bands do get signed but most do not! Read this. It sheds some light on how the Arctic Monkeys "made it"; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Monkeys
+1000 I used to work in 'The Business' in a past-life. Labels have little interest in signing bands & never really have. Very, very few bands get signed as 'a band'. Many bands where it looks like the individual band members are all happily signed on equal terms are nothing of the sort. It's the song writer(s) in the band who are signed to the recording & publishing deals - & they are the only ones who ever make any real money. Everyone else is disposable. I have a good mate who plays bass in an very famous british band (multiple platinum LP's - headlining Glastonbury, etc...) - he's very far from being poor - but compared to the millionaire lead singer/song-writer...no comparison. He only really makes decent money when they tour.
 19.
I have recently been in a situation where my services were not required. The bandleader split the band, then re-engaged everyone but me - and I would much have preferred him to be straight up about it. Mind you, when you join a band whose two keyboard players both own more expensive basses/rigs than you, maybe you should expect these things!
Two keyboard players? Shudder. You're better off out of that I'd say!
 20.
is it just me that thinks it sounds like he got burnt on a deal for some studio "inspiration"?
Yep - that'll be a very likely explanation....why else would they be carrying $3,000? But they're hardly going to tell that to the police are they?
 21. PM sent re: Neumann TLM 103 mic
 22. Glyn is a top guy. Highly recommended!
 23.
Got any steak? Yeah, I know what you mean. This one just looks right. Can you fake dirt like that?
From the pictures that's definitely 100% original & very lovely (& the dirt certainly looks genuine as well!). Looks very much like my '62 Precision...
 24.

Especially if you think back to when this was done & everyone had black & white tellys - with (compared to now) poor picture quality & small screen size - the subtle silver / gold logos that were on Fender headstocks would have been really difficult to see clearly...
