  1. The one i have hankered after since first seeing it in the 90's yet only seen a couple and always in photos, never in the flesh.. the Peavey b quad 4. Never played one but just wow...what a bass. Rare as heck, mad and unreliable electronics.....maybe its a never meet your hero's moment bass wise..
  2. So, who out there bought into the signature bass market? and how did it work out. My stories 1. Billy Sheehan Guitar 1. A Yamaha ltd pacifica, budget friendly "single out with a guitar hum bucker at the neck" version. Needed a fret job to prevent blood loss, in the end. Swapped out the bucker for a real Dimarzio, good sounding bass. also added a d-tuner that never got used. Looked the part though. Guitar 2. A proper £1000+ Mk1 Billy Sheehan Pacifica. Huge in every way, sound neck. Beast of a bass. Conclusion: The proper one sounded great ...as long as you wanted 'that Billy' sound. seems like a dumb thing to expect it to be all things to all men...but its was brilliant at its job but nothing outside (cue: howls of Pacifica owner rage comments..) 2. Geddy Lee Bought in early to this and got a CIJ Jazz. What a bass..loved it.clanky and very Geddy like. Terrible machine heads... Conclusion: More like a Jazz than a 'Geddy only' bass. Great neck (marmite comment I know some people dont like thin necks). A mate of mine owned a twin neck Wal for a spell (he collected Wal's..) apparently the number 2 of 2 originally designed for Jonas Hellborg, midi, fretless huge. In the end a novelty coffee table sized bass. So who else...Macca hofner, the fella from the foo's p bass, more exotic one off's . Interested how people have get on trying to swim in the same pool as their hero's...Was it worth it?
  3. I don't know what it is they do at Sandberg to 'age' their rather nice guitars but this is a corker. I am generally not a fan of the road worn look but this is just lovely. Looks and feels genuine. The dinks and rash etc are tasteful without utterly trashing the bass. Cool as a four letter word. feel, not so 'aged' as to look like its been attacked by a rather dirty handed nutter with a belt sander. A fantastic brute of a bass. Great tonal range from the single coil and MMan style Delano pickups and pre amp. Bass can be run passive or active (pull/push on the volume) the bridge humbucker can be run full on or single coil, giving you a single coils jazz pickup option. I am pretty sure Sandberg don't do this pickup configuration anymore or use Delano so if this is your thing then....Tonally just great. My first ever Sandberg and impressive isn't an adequate description, these are great. Sporting a relatively recent set of round wounds, fretboard and fret polish. Many bills to pay so downsizing is a must.....I know I will miss it..
  4. Have owned a bunch over the years but cream of the crop have been Yamaha 425x Sire V3 (astonishing value for money). I have one for sale but even new they are in your price range Sire V7, secondhand they are a good buy Ibanez BTB - fancy woods big and chunky bass, monorail bridge. Nice all round bass
  5. Me too ..well sort of G & L jazz bass (if I can nail the bass lines off of Riot by Ricthcie Kotzen then its worth the outlay) on order, making more room in general 2 basses sold, this and another up for sale. so hopefully 4 out 1 in...for the time being of course ..lol
  6. He we have a gear4music round back electro acoustic bass very much in the style of an ovation autumn leaves round back guitar. Its basically new, and has the bonus of a decent setup, oiled fretboard, new strings and fret polish. Changing the strings has been a major boost to its sound quality and I have been amazed by its quality considering its price point. On board tuner and eq. For this money you won't find better. Bought for a project that never happened, so what you have here is a guitar set up and ready to gig, basically new, new strings and £30 cheaper than a new one. NOW SOLD
  7. Here we have the almost legendary USA musicman SUB (Sport Utility Bass) 5 string. So no, its not made in Indonesia or china or whatever... In the early 2000’s, Musicman wanted to produce a financially accessible stingray range. So they built the S.U.B range out of the same factory as the main production line, same hardware, alnico pickup, same pre amp, poplar body, slab cut, hard wearing finished and black painted neck, budget (as in crappy) tin scratchplate. Make no mistake this is a proper job (not a sub standard line as one seller of one of these thought..) ‘cept maybe the scratchplate. . They didn’t make these for long is this is an end of production 2007 model, probably one of the last one off the line. Great condition, plays great look most excellent sporting a stingray classic scratchplate (which is a direct fit no re-drilling btw). Comes with a serviceable flight case. No issues, no dings to the body, minimal wear to the finish on the neck, truss rod works perfectly, restrung, recently cleaned and oiled fretboard, intonation checked and set, no fret wear to speak of. Plug in and play. As the latter day USA builds get really quite eye waveringly expensive, this is Champagne for lemonade money imho. Beautiful and very, very cool.
  8. Here we have a Sire V3, its about 6 months old so pretty much new, intonation, truss rod etc all perfect, action is excellent, fret finish and rolled edge fretboard are superb. As opposed to the v7 (Ash, Poplar) the v3 is a mahogany bodied take of the very successful v7, slightly more trad voicing with different pickups than the v7. This makes this a good all rounder and has the advantage of the excellent Marcus miller pre amp. Through body or top mount through bridge stringing, absolutely nothing to do except play it I guess. As an added bonus I am including a pair of the version 1 5 string pickups from a v7, so a few minutes soldering and you can have that full on Marcus miller vibe going on if that's you thing… Excellent bass but it’s a spare to my sandberg and needs must. The vinyl sticker has only been on there a short time and will come off with ease or leave it on, it makes people smile. Selling because my car has needed a new clutch and MOT work this month and no one wants my body so selling this instead. £280 with pickups £250 without. Now on auction, will be removed if bids received.
  9. I traded recently a 5 string bass for a Sandberg 'aged' 5 string. Very impressed. The aging on the bass isn't just beat the crap out of it, the basses do have a great played in vibe. Not actually being a fan of the road worn thing before I can get it now that I have tried one done well, and the Sandberg folk seem to have it down....GLWTS
  10. the whole 'what wood from where' debate is another level of confusion. I asked a question about what companies were the most environmentally aware in a letter to bass player magazine years ago. The answers were really interesting. Yamaha were amazing in that they manage their own wood supply from land they own, any off cuts are used to generate power etc. other side of the coin Mr Peavey referred to me as a tree hugger and the last time he flew over the amazon there seemed to be a lot of trees....that aside its actually a really murky business as illegally logged tree look just like managed one when cut up into guitar shapes. Going back to the thread i do hope that things like roast maple is an alternative to quickly vanished tropical hardwoods and that we start valuing the latter more so than we do. (step down off high horse...and relax).
  11. Maybe we will be seeing standard maple necks with roasted boards as well..
  12. I have seen that Sire are already offering it on the v10 series and have seen a Chinese make that is on the up called Shijie and they aren't boutique prices (not cheap though so I guess prices are still going to come down..)
  13. As a veteran of owning many basses, with Maple on maple, rosewood on maple, even ebony on mahogany necks...whats the deal with roasted maple, its right up there with the worlds new obsession with gin and IPA beer ( I challenge you to find a non Guinness stout in a supermarket...). Saw Ernie Ball mentioning that it crystallises the resin structure or the like. Is it a reaction to the lockdown on rosewood? Its was nowhere a couple of years ago and its blooming all over the place. And whilst we're at it why isn't mahogany controlled more tightly....it aint planted its just cut down, yet guitar company's are now selling models in their ranges which are mahogany bodied cheaper than the ash or whatever versions (sire v3 vs Sire v7 for example).
  14. The Spector coda 4 aren't that common, but lovely basses, narrow string spacing, lovely quilt maple cap under translucent red finish. Black hardware. This isn't the mega expensive US version..I think this is the more accessible Korean pro version, although I cant find a 'made in' label anywhere. The pickups are EMG hz. The bass comes with the black pickup guard option on the neck position, I am not a great fan personally, so I leave it off with the screws in to block the holes (see pic) also supplied in sale. Lovely playing guitar bright and punchy, narrow J type neck, narrow string spacing. A very nicely put together, playing and visually excellent bass. Price droppped as bass now returned to original, and still great btw..pickup spec. Now on auction, will be removed if bids received £275
  15. I'll take it, I am in Rochester will pm you for pickup
  16. These HK basses (and guitars) were a thing about 10 years ago. Something to do with a German importer if memory serves.. Nice build quality with usable hardware...and you have upgraded, Nice. If I hadn't just pull the trigger on a 5 string I'd be interested...GLWTS
  17. hi, slight correction if I may. The SUB series was brought out as an initial attempt to produce a cheaper US built alternative, same factory, same hardware (although not stamped) 2 band EQ from the stingray and a body made from Poplar. So what you really have here is a Stingray classic, |(the scratcplate from a classic actually fits these, I know because I changed it out) before they actually made one, poplar body, painted neck (saved money) and hard wearing tough as old boots paint job (also cheaper as it didn't require polishing or the wood to look fancy) slab cut body (saved on body finishing). I have this exact model (and have owned a few other from the same era..). A classic Musicman bass, don't be fooled by the SUB label or associate it with the later SUB models built outside the USA. So, there is nothing SUB standard (sic) these are excellent basses and well worth the money GLWTS! (apologies is this sounded like a soapbox rant or whatever lol)
  18. Played it some more and decided not to sell it.. The pickups upgrade is to the most excellent Dimarzio DP123 Jazz pickups from the EMG hz original. I fitted them to open up the voicing a bit. Can be returned to stock and price adjusted accordingly, happy to be flexible. Originals EMG Hz will be included in the sale. The bass comes with the pickup guard option on the neck position, I am not a great fan personally, so I leave it off with the screws in to block the holes (see pic) also supplied in sale. Lovely playing guitar bright and punchy (both types of pickups slightly more lower mids with the dimarzio's) , narrow J type neck, narrow string spacing. All round an excellent thing, selling due to pulling the trigger on a(nother) Musician SUB US version and the bank computer says no. (btw the pics mostly show the EMG's on board...The dimarzio's have adjustable pole pieces in black). Can revert to stock and drop price to £325ono Interested I P bass trades of similar value with cash adjustment etc.
