1. I thought perhaps the variation in tonal quality in the same make and model of instruments were due to the natural differences in every piece of wood (assuming little room for human error on electronics).
2. It's looking fantastic. It really is. It sounds like a great experience and like it's going to be a great bass. What woods are/were available to you? How does the pricing work?
3. That jazz is growing on me.
4. *strokes monitor longingly*
5.
Hmm, hadn't thought of looking at older stuff. Had to do a nearly 3 hour set last gig (to fit in with catering and speeches and goodness knows what else!) and my left arm was going numb by the end. Even tried hanging it on my right shoulder which brought everything closer but felt very strange. Any way thanks for your thoughts.
Perhaps try a violin bass. Very light, lots of character, fat warm tone, 30" scale, cheap to replace if you don't get on with it, huge selection old or new, always [url="http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=1&catref=C6&from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=%28beatle%2C+violin%2C+hofner%29+-%28scales%2C+dvd%29&sacat=4713%26catref%3DC6&a6=-24&a14=-24&a53=-24&a30482=-24&alist=a6%2Ca51%2Ca14%2Ca3801%2Ca53%2Ca30482%2Ca55765&pfmode=1&reqtype=1&gcs=2126&pfid=3128&pf_query=%28beatle%2C+violin%2C+hofner%29+-%28scales%2C+dvd%29&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&sadis=200&fpos=DT4+0NR&sabfmts=1&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&sabdlo=&sabdhi=&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search"]plenty on ebay...
6. Sorry, I haven't read the thread. Aren't these American flats, in short supply in the UK, not grossly more expensive than other flats, are perceived by some as the warmest flats around and should last forever? Shops know how to price things by judging other prices and seeing when stock shifts. If the strings are gathering dust, the shop isn't making any money either. You should have offered twenty. They probably only cost him 10 or so.
7.
Thanx for the welcome. Nice hat by the way
Ta. I dig the handle.
8. The '60s semis produce some of the best tones imo. It's worth bearing in mind strap length/position, neck positioning, nut width. There are also medium scale basses, but aren't common. Aria ProII did a few medium scale models.
9.
and this Antoria Jazz from around 1975, although I'm guessing a refinish http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antoria-Jazz-Bass_W0...1QQcmdZViewItem
pg The Precision's in Japan.
10. Welcome the forum, Zach.
11. Different pups too? I'd rather a classic. Not heard of SD Antiquity II, only the vintage ones modeled on the '57.
12. Cool beans!
13. Welcome to BC. I hope it caters for all your bassy needs.
14. The bassmag review said they can be bowed. I'm also very interested in this. So if anyone's tried it...
15. I think there was one on ebay less than a month or so ago. DiMarzios probably. I think someone on BC has a bass with two P pups. I remember it being mentioned, but I could be wrong.
16. Howdy Longmayyourun. Welcome to't forum
17. I think my small hands is our only difference.
18. I was watching that French guy on youtube play one last night. Very impressive, but I can't understand the appeal over an ordinary cello, myself. Sorry for being no help whatsoever. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bY9CTTeA1oc
19. Welcome to BC Tim! Don't worry, we're ever so gentle.

21.
Shame, I'd love to thank him (and I'm sure the wife would love to kill him for causing us to have a big chunk of wood taking up space!)
I always thought it was bollocks; just selling techniques on ebay when people say the wife wants rid of it etc. I can't think of a more beautiful inanimate thing to have in a home.
22. Welcome Steve. Everyone give Steve a hand for sharing.
