1. It depends on what is your perception or philosophy of what is musical. I could argue for the essential minimalism of punk being the pinnacle style for bass but a jazz afficionado claiming wise and latent musical nuance is the key to bassy nirvana is never going to agree. If someone can draw out beauty and expression from a piece of music then I think it's worth having. However, I can't help but think some peoples' connection with their instrument is blinding their judgment.
2. Updated Although I wish APC would make their minds up about insurance.
3. White or a sanding in my opinion. A nice grain looks great with black.
4. Always planned to start a band called Kurt's choice. I think it could work - jazzy drummer and some bongos.
5. mmm Rics make me feel all warm inside. Like a trusted friend. Love the British weather too. Bo-lakes to the nay-sayers.
6. I'm trying. I'm really trying. (My sense of humour was removed at birth) Welcome The BBC.
7. +1 to the first few posts and anyone who agrees with them
What really impresses me though is when the bass player is playing melodically, yet it makes the song. For instance a lot of James Jamerson's playing is almost like a bass solo all the way through the song, but it never sounds like overplaying.
Same here. That's the absolute pinnacle, in my opinion. Players like Jamerson, Bakithi Khumalo and the best jazzers that manage to hold a tasteful groove whilst playing a musically and technically complex melodic lines that add to the musicality of the song. I can count the number of electric bassists that have mastered that on one hand.
8. Love that flat bridge pup tone.
9. Only the slap clip seems to be working, the rest are 404s. - Sounds good though.
10. Shamelessly bumping this so I remember to read it tomorrow.
11.
Tony Kanal from No Doubt. I just love playing 'Spiderwebs' and 'Different People'. Tragic Kingdom has a perfect mix of funk/ska/pop/rock/punk/reggae/disco playing Even 'Don't Speak' has got a pretty good melodic line too. Jon
+1 "It's My Life" Great line.
12. Oh and with an anti-slapper!
13. **** me, Vintage are stepping it up. Great review. --- I really didn't like that cheap fretless they did but I always felt their guitars were of excellent playability. I'll check out the sound clips tomorrow. I've never seen such a beautiful instrument for such a great price. How do you feel it compares, tonal quality wise, to your jazz and stingray?
14. Welcome, Gary! We're all still learning, though not very long for me. Great influences btw!
15.
1978 supplied from new with a jazz neck.
Oh would you look at that. (just in case you missed it)
16.
My first bass was a Kay bass, similar to the one you've described.. Cost £22 from Woolies in 1975 (I think) and it was pretty awful, but it got me started. Then I persuaded my Mum to buy me this Hondo Ricky from a catalogue, which I still have! This year, I've done a bit of work on it; replaced the tuners which had broken, had the neck sorted out etc, so it's vaguely playable again.. But really it's there as a memento of my first years in a proper gigging band and, more importantly, of my Mum.
I had one of these. I've heard them bashed on BC but I loved mine. Haven't been able to play My Generation as perfectly since.
17. The first bass I played was a pretty floral acoustic. The problem was that I was a tiny, sh*tty teenager and ended up with an SG copy (Kay). Not a bad bass, though. Would love to hunt down that acoustic.
18. This is getting silly. Would I be able to recycle unwanted abstract emotions?
19. mmm, the most attractive build so far me thinks. Are you going to put the little tuners on like the original? That makes the whole look in my opinion. I couldn't work out what was wrong with the cheap modern versions and the. bam. it's the tuners.
20.
Dude, that sh*t's vintage: Music Man Stingray 1977. or is it? - how old does a guitar have to be to be considered 'vintage'? he's got Loads of really nice guitars - check out the list on the left hand side of his page; http://www.youtube.com/user/MarloweDK mmmm....
Thought as much. 'Tis an expensive pass time we have. Modern Stingrays do nothing for me but that one is draw dropping. I went through a few of his vids. Loved the marcus miller bass muted groove. That Stingray still has the best tone in my opinion, though. Cheers for introducing me.
21. +1. Maybe it's just the angle but I wouldn't go near it at a tenth of that price.
22. It doesn't detract from the ones for sale but I can certainly see why you're keeping the ones you're keeping. ohh, I've come over all dizzy.
23.
Yeh thanks Paul the. Like I said to fleamail, I'm very lucky to own it. I don't rekon it looks as 'beautiful' as some other guitars but it's definitely the most honest peice of wood i'd ever want to own! you can really see it in the shot of the shot of the headstock rear - it's just a 'plank'! - the instrument in it's most simplest form. anyway, enough about my guitar; i've recently been taking a more serious interest in learning how to play it!!! wanted to learn the bass part for the stevie wonder song 'do i do' so tried to google the transcript (there's only so much i'm able to do by ear - it's all the fast stuff in the 4th bar of each phrase that gets me).. anyway, couldn't find the notes so thought i'd try YouTube - searched for 'Nathan Watts, Do I Do' and didn't find any footage of the man himself, but instead, came accross this guy - you heard of him? MarloweDK... german dude - frickin' awesome. here's the link of the Do I Do 'playalong': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyTQzA8_kI8
Oh my. How much would a bass like that set me back? I'm not normally attracted to MMs and the tone is so warm and gentle despite being active. Is there anything MMs can't do?
24. Number 2 sounds like flats to me. Which ever it is, the modern+pod settings are very impressive. What sort of POD settings are we talking here? (I've never used one). Do you know what brand of rounds he used?
25.
it's an 'Artisan'. found it at my local market music shop place. i think it comes from the same factory that pumps out Shine, Wulf, Harley Benton, Holland & Barret, you know the ones. it's a 1 piece mould, some sorta plastiky stuff. very very bright and harsh sounding, but with the right eq-ing does a very nice upright sound. just watch out for the feedback!
Cheers! Love the classic styling.
