Everyone judges everything. It's human nature to be analytical. I think the skill is in judging what you really need. And by acknowledging this, setting aside unnecessary wants and GAS and things that look purdy or what adverts/idols suggest you ought to own. I personally have a tone in my mind that I aim for, then over time try to achieve it. Snobbery aside, this could cost me a few grand or four hundred quid. As long as you consume what you need, manufacturers shouldn't over-compensate, people wont collect too much stuff and gear wont be wasted. If someone needs to have a nice bass to get the tone they desire and/or the playability required to express themselves, then I respect it if they have the means. I wont judge if it's well thought out and sincerely desired. People probably just ignorantly presume that it's a fad buy, like a runner with new trainers. Bassists just earn my respect though, we are the rational (generally)

I congratulate you sir, your cabs look very smart. The hard work shows. You should definitely be making and selling these.
We could begin our tour by a gig in your bathroom ?
The acoustics in my bathroom are excellent. My father's flatulence has proved this on many an occasion.

I like to buy a brand for nostalgia or for having a reliable reputation. I love the way when I think of Fender; I conjure up images of an old artisan in a little southern state woodshop creating tangible magic. This is unrealistic of course, but it's nice to kid myself when I look at the logo. You don't get that anymore with industrial style set ups where there is no culture captured within the brand; just science, sterility, cost cutting and an emotionally uninvolved work-force (presumably). To be honest, I find it difficult to think of a manufacturer that creates or markets towards my interests, which is a crying shame. Can you think of a brand that is humble, ethical, honest, reliable, creates an instrument with a quality tone, doesn't add ridiculous mark-up based on reputation and is affordable to the gigging bassist? I'm probably typing in ideals as per usual. Although, it's the customer who dictates price, obviously there's enough demand for the different price brackets. Ironically, the idea of far east production has probably forced competition on unreasonable retail prices thanks to our stingey human nature. Otherwise, value for money comes first. So long as they're being produced I'd much rather have a Cardinal Series Aria Pro than a vintage Fender Precision. A Toby Pro, Mania or SUB than an expensive active equivalent. I think it's unnecessary to pine for the wrong reasons when there is such good quality and good value instruments available. There are other things involved of course like how ethical a company is regarding to labor, tree felling etc.. but my pet peeve is the rock bottom Staggs and Encores amongst others I've had the misfortune of playing, who's only aim it seems is to trick naive parents in to buying them for Christmas presents. Rant rant rant. Amps are a problem though, I have expensive tastes....valves. Unfortunately, I'll probably always feel a slight nagging disappointment in my tone, but that's just tough cheese until I'm earning some serious moneys. It's all bollocks really though, I have a friend that used gig with a £80 Hofner copy and an 18" HH combo his uncle gave him. It was awesome tone wise and was a good work out lifting the amp out of the boot. This all said, I'd still really like a vintage Gibson EB-3l - but only because I haven't seen a good enough equivalent.
I certainly hope so. Time will tell. Thankfully no if that was for a raiding party to relieve me If its for a try out well my son is due to move down to Blandford in November so no doubt we shall be heading that way on occasion Hadn't even thought or considered that one and looking at it now it could have been a contender, but its too late now the deed is done
I think I was nodding towards that, subconsciously at least. Although, I know that if I tried it out, I would immediately fall in love with it. And 'though my GAS is as fit as a fiddle, my wallet would have a stroke. The H&K is a funny amp, I don't think there's an extension cab that matches it and I don't think you can run another cab in parallel, suggesting the original twelve wouldn't be driven as its intention when using an extension or not at all. This is just my naive observation though. I think you've made the best choice IMO. If I had the money, this would be my choice of combo. looking forward to the meatier review, paul.
So why not buy a P, or an active P or a custom P? Butchering a poor defensive 'Ray like that. It's inhuman.
Rays are great quality and hang less on reputation and more on merit. They also have quite a different neck, quite. And he likes the P pickup, like me

Sounds like a great buy to me, are you in pillaging distance of me? Had you tried the Hughes and Kettner(sp?) QC 412 or whatever it's called? Would love to compare those two.

I'm sure he has good reason. He's clued up in audio engineering. He invented the Copperphone. He did an interview with Bass Player, I'll see if I can find an article, or anything online.

I wasn't paying attention but I thought it was just a P without a pg. The spree have sold out though - short hair, black suits with pink punk patches. *cries*

Best of luck Yves! I'd definitely go and see an afro-funk band from France, sounds like a great night out. paul.

I really can't think of one. All the best used a normal jazz or Precision. I'd like to have a go on Jack Bruce's Warwick. What players ought to have one?
You could walk out of Bass Day UK with a free one http://www.bassday.co.uk/news.html
I'd totally take an Italia over an MM copy. A very revealing contrast. Separate draws presumably?

Welcome to Basschat Fusionbassist1! I am happy for your arrival, largely.

Harley Benton?

That made me cringe all over.

The best rhythm sections are when the bass and drums are interdependent. You know that feeling you get where the drummer starts off and then the bass joins and complements it perfectly. Magic.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=i6kUm6NksKA I really like the tone here and the finish of the bass. It seems to lack depth on the low end though. is this the £1800 version?
