1.
Sorry, mate. One thing: you can rest assured that a different speaker lead wouldn't have helped. Wish I could have been there with you. I always see a faulty valve amp as a glorious opportunity to nab a bargain - but obviously that's easy for me to say, 'cos I can usually fix 'em! How much was he asking, BTW? Oh yes: was the hum there all the time, regardless of what you did with the controls, or was it affected by them?
It was on ebay - but has now been taken off. Although I have no idea what it's worth and I doubt I'd have the money spare to fix it. I hate not knowing if it would be a £20 job or a £200 job - besides the fact I haven't heard it yet The hum was almost silent on stand by, but when it was switched on it was very loud - and increasingly so as the Master was turned up. It's a real shame, it was nice looking and the grill hadn't gone brown. But after some bad experiences in the past, I tend to run a mile from anything that isn't working right. Here's a picture of a Bassman (this isn't it, this is a 50 and a dif' cab): Although after seeing the blonde blackfaced ones, I'd be left GASsing and feeling second place: fwar.
 2. Cheers Oxblood! I read that over many times on the way up to the guy's house. Unfortunately, the amp didn't work. It was very faint at full volume and the hum was really quite loud. The valves looked good and the plates weren't red. He even had some spare German valves. I didn't think to try a different lead to the cab until I got home though - I'm really hoping that that wouldn't have solved the problem. He said he'd tried it the previous night and it worked fine, although he hadn't played it regularly for 3 years. It was a Fender Bassman 100 with its 4x12 cab, circa 1976. ...A bit of a shame - although he prefers the sound of his ABM500, 115+210.
 3. Hello all, I'm trying out an old head and cab tonight. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any checks that should be performed, just anything that should be looked/listened out for when buying gear. I was told over the phone that the amp had some hum - which would be fixed by a re-valve. Also, one of the four speakers in the cab is mismatched and has a different sized dust-cover (I don't know the implications sound wise of this). Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, paul.
 4. Hi MoJoke, It's good to see someone who isn't a million miles from me. That is all. paul. (From Weymouth, Dorset)
 5. Johnny Cash - Marshall Grant. Starsailor - James Stelfox. Billie Holiday - unknown - possibly Chuck Israels
 6. How long do you guys leave the valves to warm up, if at all?
 7. It seems that if you get a good'ne, they're great. Other wise, you better be cucking fareful. Just get it replaced/refunded and give a bad HC review. If I ever purchase Ashdown equipment; it'll be s/h, tried and tested on ebay or Basschat. paul.
 8. I was thinking of bidding on that - 157 right? People seem to like them more for guitar than bass, but it's the same with a lot of valve bass amps (eg bassman). I bet it's great though. There's a head on ebay at the mo' which I might go for as I have a 16 ohm cab.
Does anyone have any thoughts on WEM gear? I've seen the dominator head - it's only 20 watts so it could be quite nice at home.

everything I have experienced and discussed with others relating to the dominator is - incredibly awesome! fantastic valve heads/amps that are far louder than their 20 watt rating....
9. A good, well written description goes a long way. I'd buy it if I were interested. The body and neck are probably dated differently though. - you could always ask for the p-neck date and pot codes.
 10.
hey paul used to have an swr 750x with the preamp valve.. what an amp, articulation of sound was supreme but unfortunately forme it was problematic from the moment I got it! so it went back and I got the ampeg svt 3pro and I love that soooo much it has 3 preamp vales, 2 drive valves and solid state power section... everything I have experienced and discussed with others relating to the dominator is - incredibly awesome! fantastic valve heads/amps that are far louder than their 20 watt rating....
That's really helpful, thank you!
 11. I swear I find out about a new brand of bass every day. Congrats Andy, she's a beaut'.
 12. I've been doing some homework on available modern valve gear. The reoccurring manufacturers are: Hartke, EBS, Ashdown, Eden, and some TE and Peavey - which all seem to emulate or have 'valve sound'. A brand that keeps popping up that I wasn't expecting is SWR - often fitted with valve pramps. I know valves are beneficial in different ways but I didn't think SWR were associated with warm tubey loveliness. Is is my misconception that SWR gear is clean, clinical or angry? Oh, this one looks like a nice little, reasonably priced setup: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peavey-T-Max-500watt...1QQcmdZViewItem Only a pre-amp though. --- Does anyone have any thoughts on WEM gear? I've seen the dominator head - it's only 20 watts so it could be quite nice at home.
 13. I have a P-special (jazz neck, jazz pup, gold pg, vintage pups). I'm going to fit covers, thumb rest and re-paint it in either a dark chocolate brown or vintage white. That should make it look pretty old-school.
 14. As for brains this object does in order to pledge is not the good people should diddle, stupid, it is the string cable 程数.
 15. 99ster comes with my full recommendation. I bought a couple of things at a fantastic price and received them very quickly. Great comms too! Cheers Jim, paul.
 16. Despite the SG being one of the most iconic and styalised shapes in modern music, yours looks very unique. Well done sir.

I'll PM you with info... Cheers Jim
Paid for. It's about time my bass got sexay
 19. Hey Will - It's great to see an old Peavey cab. The silver dust caps make me weak at the knees paul.
 20. Hello BCers, I've only had three transactions as of this post so I don't expect it to be overflowing with attention - but I figured it's best to start early. Anyhow, tell me if it was a buy or a sale and if you think I did a good job...(or didn't) Cheers, paul.
 21. I'll admit to not knowing either - this might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweeter#Types_of_tweeters --- I always figured bass bins are bass cabs designed for PA systems. Am I right? Can you just use them for bass? paul.
 22.
A Shaftesbury: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 Apparently the fact it's been touched by some talentless oxygen thieves is a point of interest. J.
Oh! That one's near me. Makes a change.
 23.
Did the bass have a reserve? This is why I originally asked if anyone had any experience of how a bidder could bid himself up! I've watched enough eBay sales to think that this one is fishy. As has been pointed out it could be an inexperienced eBayer or someone bidding post drinky-poos. At the end of the day if it is shill bidding and that's the way that the seller wants to market his bass then that's up to him. Though £800 isn't an unreasonable amount, I won't be taking the bidding up higher.
If it had a reserve it would say 'reserve met'. Perhaps he took it off after bids were placed - although I'm not sure you can do this. - But I suspect this is what he's done. That way you can reach a price of £800 with only one bidder when the reserve may have been about £810
That's a beaut' of a bass from a 'wat of a seller. He's not good enough for your money. I've seen a few of those basses, another will come up soon.
And I stick by it.
 24.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...hlink:middle:uk Just wonderin how much this bass is worth he doesn't give the letters at the start of the serial number so unsure how old it is, looks good tho!
Well 'worth' can be very subjective. But if you want an idea of how much you should expect to pay for this bass; here's one that sold recently: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Precision-Bas...1QQcmdZViewItem So on that and that alone the starting bid wouldn't be a bad price. Although there are things to keep in mind with the bass that I've linked to: 'pickup only' and the mind numbing appearance of the description.
At the moment, IMHO it's worth nothing. The serial number doesn't look right - a bit blurry and fuzzy? Ask the seller for a close-up of the serial number. It's just a bit toooo clean for a 16+ year old bass that's been gigged for 10 years. Hamster
Hah, yea. Assuming it's genuine. But it looks good to me.
 25.
When I've wanted to increase my max bid (when I can't be near a pc at the end of the auction), the actual bid doesn't increase until someone else bids - have you any info about this validated bid malarky? I'd have expected it to sit at £5.50 until someone else put in a higher and pushed up the price. I've never seen someone (like bidder 2) be able to outbid themselves - increase their max bid but not force the actual price up.
Oh yea. - I'm confused then, I don't have much experience with private bidding so I'm too ignorant to debate. Was there a reserve that he took off after bidding?
