1. Headstock pic of a Squier that I pimped up for my daughter 003 (2) by gem5819, on Flickr
2. A spray up with some proper switch cleaner can work wonders. Worth trying before going for replacement of the pot.

4. Thanks to Elaine from the customer service office of D'Addario Strings, I have ended up with a surplus set of strings. Instead of sending me a long scale set these were sent in error. I didn't notice they were medium scale length until I had started to wind the G onto my P bass. One of those DOH moments. Anyway, Instead of making me feel like a right plonker, she kindly sent me a long scale set. All of my basses are long scale so these won't get used. I have spoken to Elaine today about sending them back but as I've opened them, she didn't want them back. So I asked if she would be happy for me to sell them on Bass Chat and to donate the proceeds to a charity of my choice. She is happy with this arrangement, so here they are. ECB81M Chromes, Regular Light Gauge .045/.065/.080/.100 MEDIUM SCALE LENGTH I looked on the strings direct site today and they are priced at £32.95. So I think a fair price would be [s]£22.00[/s] £20.00 inc p&p. Would rather not incur pay pal fees, so bank transfer would be ideal. CHARITY OF CHOICE: A good friend of mine died a few years back after a horrendous time with Pancreatic cancer. His daughter is running the London Marathon this year to raise funds for the Pancreatic Cancer Charity. So if these strings sell I will add the money to what we have already donated.
5. Got to agree with all of the above. Sometimes though you have to steel yourself and just jump in at the deep end. It's easy to fall in to the trap of thinking you are not good enough, every other player is better etc. and to just keep on practicing on your own. One of the problems then is, unless your practicing is very structured, you will tend to play what you already know over and over. If you know your way around the instrument and you want to play in a band, go for it. Good luck with it
6. I'm so glad I opted to watch a recording of the Compleat Angler instead. Don't even like watching Paul Weller these days, ever since the night he managed to spill his bottle of beer all over my brand new suede clogs, gone right off him.

8. Hi Ian. Sorry, I didn't realise they were out of phase. Just thought it was quite an interesting and useful setting. Hope someone comes up with an answer for you. Maybe worth a google. Let me know if it's a problem, dont want you to be unhappy with your purchase.
9. An obvious point that some punters seem to conveniently forget is that although it's "only" two x 45 min sets and therefore only 1.5 hours work, with travelling, set up, hanging about prior to playing, first set, break, second set, pack down and travelling home, unloading etc. Being realistic it's probably more like 5 or six hours work.
10. So on the third attempt and after much help, patience and support from Elaine at D'Addarioin, I have finally succeeded in fitting the strings, thankfully it was worth persevering. They not only do they sound damn fine, they feel so silky smooth to the touch. I know that a lot of players beliieve that flats are only good for thud and thump but that is certainly not the case with these, there is brilliant definition, plenty of oomph and enough brightness to make me very happy (not a very technical appraisal, sorry) . Looking forward to gigging them in the not too distant.
11. The replacement set for the replacement set arrived this morning. It was about 3.30 yesterday afternoon when I emailed Elaine about the problem. How's that for service?
12.
That's yet another example of great service! Seems to be a lot of it about recently What a massive pain about the replacement set being Medium gauge! I'd feel so awkward informing them of the mistake!
Yes I was a bit . But instead of making me feel like a prize pillock, Elaine at D'addario apologised for the mistake and has sent me out another set.
13. Same for me Higgie, I've been using DR strings for the last couple of years. This is my first purchase of flats, although one of my P basses came with flats on. Update Still haven't got the new flats on< I didnt notice until I had trimmed the G and started winding it on that I hsve been sent a medium scale set.
14. Think I enjoyed it but had more than enough of widdlywiddlysiddly guitar solos by the time I went to bed. Could have been worse though at least no drum solos
15. A pleasant and hassle free transaction with Ian. Excellent comms and true to his word with payment. Trade with confidence fellow BC'ers.
16. Last week I mentioned in someone elses thread about a problem I had experienced when fitting a set of D'Addario flatwounds. All was going well until attempting to tune the G. It just wouldn't tune up, kept slipping and eventually after a few atttempst the last 20 mm or so snappped. I was feeling quite glum about it, because my girls had got them for me as a birthday pressie and at £30, not cheap. Another BC'er suggested that I contact D'Addario, which I did via e mail. Anyway Elaine Smith from sales/marketing replied in double quick time, informing me that they couldnt supply me with a single string but would I be happy with a replacement set and a T shirt for my inconvenience. The Bass world does seemed to be blessed with some very good companies, who seem to excell at customer care. If there is a Bass Chat list of companies that have shown great customer care, then I nominate D'Addario to be added.
17. I think if I were you and given the lack of a decent shop/luthier, I would be determined to go down the DIY route. There are plenty of resources available to you, along with a lot of knowledgable, helpful people on this site. It's well worth learning a few basics. Being able to carry out running repairs and set ups can be very satisfying and save a whole load of dosh. Maybe it would be worth considering buying a cheapo instrument to act as your guinea pig, rather than risking your p bass project. You never know you might become the luthier that your neck of the woods is lacking
18. The one that gets me all riled up is "It's a simple repair, only take five mins and a 50p part" also "it could do with a polish".
19. .Good news indeed, let's hope it is all ok
20. Wouldn't you think that local guitar shops would be offering a better level of service? what with the internet competion and so on. I do like the idea of supporting the local high street establishments but have to draw the line when they are staffed/owned by total knobs who dish out that kind of advice. Very short sighted to lie to your potential customers. Or did he think you might be a danger to yourself wielding a soldering iron
21. Thought I would bump this up again and then decide whether to Ebay it in a few days time.
22. Cracking gig last night at The George in Hoddesdon, Herts. Not a huge crowd but friendly and they enjoyed our set. Good guvernor, bought us a drink as soon as we arrived, happily paid us at the end and invited us back.
23. Got to agree with Discreet. On the plus side though, he at least had the decency to give you the dosh for the re listing but that doesn't make it right.
