Stingrays improve my playing...well they feel like they do.
gary mac replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Its all swings and roundabouts. A Stingray makes you play better, a Jazz improves your IQ and a Precision increasres penis length
I played a guest slot at a gig last night on a Ric, that's one bass that certainly doesn't make me play better. I had to dumb down with my playing and keep it very simple. Love the look but just find them so uncomfortable and awkward. So yes: I feel that some basses certainly make me play better and some, not. -
It's a technique/sound that I think suits some numbers very well, so yes I play that way ocassionally.

Did a depp saturday night for Mice With Glasses, a band that I really enjoy playing with. A private function/garden party in a very plush pile in the sticks. We got fed and watered and then played a set that went down very well. Because there were a lot of party goers dancing, the break was abandoned and we played right through the set and then a half hour encore as requested. The only mistake I made was putting my ear plugs in my jacket pocket prior to playing and then taking it off and sticking it behind my rig as we went on. The pace didn't let up and with no breaks I couldn't retrieve them. So seriously buzzy ears for the last couple of days. My bitsa P bass sounded pretty fine.
Pretty fantastic, despite the major setback of the guitarist breaking a string and not having any spares on him ¬¬ It took him ten minutes to track down another guitar to lend, during which time me and the drummer jammed our way through various genres of music - improv being something we've never done before - in the middle of a punk set That said, apparently one person told my friend that the guitarist ought to go offstage more often, so I'm not sure how to take that feedback
A guitarist without spare strings? you most certainly need to have a word.

Nice job, that looks pretty damn tasty.

Anyone know where to get cheap nitro lacquer?
gary mac replied to Soloshchenko's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've used this seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nitrocellulose-Lacqu...=item2c5a545adc Don't know it it's what you would call cheap but the service and products are excellent. -
Angie, that's the same supplier that I used for the pickguard. I guess I was just lucky in that the fit was very good, no filing/sanding necessary. I did have to fill most of the existing screw holes and re-drill though.

Thoroughly recommended. Simon took the worry, and hassle out of finding a lovely 75 Fender P. Answered all my questions and always replied promptly to pms/emails. Sourced it, got it imported and delivered to my door in very quick time. Great Bass Chatter to deal with.
Thanks for all the thoughts guys. I'm kind of surprised that the bias seems to be toward keeping it at the moment! The trouble is I can't really afford to keep it if it's not earning its keep! I still have my first bass, a crappy squier P which I painted metallic purple! That's worth about 1% of piss-all so I'll never sell it. My jazz would hopefully be worth at least £600 - £650, so I could really use that money to buy something else. I guess I've got lots and lots of fond memories of my jazz, and they'll stay with me forever. Do I need to look at it now and then too? I don't know..... Gwilym - I'm very interested to hear that about the Ken Taylor! I've never come across one in the flesh, but my Basic is AWESOME and the mass of extra tones on offer would be great. Plus, I'm a sucker for the Virgin White one with black hardware..........
Think you've supplied the answer in your third sentence, no sentimentality going on there

I had the same problem in my younger days, although I didn't have to pay for my strings so it wasn't too much of a worry. I always had a can of anti perspirant in the gig bag and would give the fingers a blast just prior to playing. Worked a treat but I'm betting someone will be along to say that it's probably not a good idea
If you saw the set list I have for a Dep gig next sat I guess you could call that a low point, i'm doing it to help out friends
Had a few of those over the years. But the set list for the dep next week is one I'm really looking forward to. All I need to do now is learn it.
I've just left my regular band due to musical differences. But now joined up with a couple of new guys, but only at the jamming stage at the moment. So it will probably be a little while yet before I get gigging again. Maybe I will have to try a open mic session, just to see what the basses are like in a live situation.
I've just been asked to stand in for a departed bass player, wonder if its the same band? Yet another set list for me to learn. There is a well run open mic night at the white swan in hoddesdon, not sure when the next one is but I can find out, if you are interested.

They both look lovely Brig, really impressive. Maybe I'll get to hear them at some point as we are both in the same county Let me know where/when you are gigging

The link doesn't work for me

Looking forward to seeing the finished job. Love Candy Apple Red, what about pickguard, staying as is or being changed? -
Not a full gig but a half hour or so set at an open mic night in The Gate pub in North London. Didn't fancy doing this one much and my mood didn't improve when as I walking in, a huge menacing looking blighter told me "you'd better be good mate". Against my expectations it turned out to be a good evening, very well run, decent P.A. , good audience and some decent muscianship. Think we went down well, after a slightly shakey start due to our illustrious leader kicking off with Proud Mary although he told us it was to be Midnight Hour. We finished with Whole Lotta Rosie. As I was leaving, the menacing blighter, told me "I was proper", which I guess I should accept as a compliment
Most tab is not accurate, but if your in a rush it can speed things up but you still have to listen to fill in the blanks and make judgements on what is wrong I find when I'm time pushed that chord charts are more useful for speeding up the process, you still have to learn the line by ear but at least you have a reference for roots and structure
Yes that's what I tend to do, chord charts that is.

Thanks Jakester but thing I've got it now. Much appreciated though.
I`ve I had lots of P basses over theyears, US ones, Jap ones but have always got shot of them because I get bored with them quickly. But I am of the opnion that everyone should have one in their collection and so, I put this together to satisfy the P bass craving when it appears. Squire body, Jap 57 reissue neck, Wilkinson tuners, Kent Armstrong Hot pickup, wiring upgrade kit and Halfords Montego red paint job. It`s sound pretty good through my Sansamp and is nice and light. I think the TRB's are brilliant instruments. I've only tried four stringers but the quality was impressive

I've got to nail a set list for a depp in a week or so and was struggling a bit with a couple of numbers, so in an attempt to save myself some time I downloaded the tabs. What a miserable experience, not very accurate and I just found myself losing the will and getting very bored with it. Gone back to relying on ears and some improvising. I know TAB is a useful resource but I really can't get on with it. Right off to learn Shine by Take That and Read my Mind/Killers.
