1. 02/11/2010. Postie delivered the gold anodized pickguard and even though it was well packaged with “do not bend” written large on both sides, it had been nicely bent out of shape by some heavy handed royal mail git. Given that it hadn’t been insured, I felt that that there was little point in even contacting Royal Mail and therefore decided to attempt to straighten it out. Tool of choice was a rubber mallet. After a few minutes bashing it was reasonably flat again, with just a slight crease visible. Just about acceptable on a reliced project.
2. Old Horse Murphy has been advertising an american fretless p bass neck. And he's a splendid chap to deal with!
3. With that budget you could pick up something on this forum probably powerful enough to gig with. For example sold my trace combo on here sometime back for about 300 ish I think. Can't remember exact spec but 15" speaker 12 band graphic etc and with the option of adding an extension cab.

5. Japanese Fender P bass body that I intend to relic, and transform in to something resembling a 1958 model. 01/11/10 First job was to remove bridge and strap locks. Next the ageing, which I felt really nervous about as the body looked so good. I decided to just work on the rear of the body at this stage as given my lack of experience it seemed like the safest bet. So starting with 1000 grade wet and dry I nervously made a start. Then moved on to 1500 and finally 2000. At this stage it didn’t look good. Gave it a T cut which improved things marginally but the sanding had left the surface covered with fine scratches, which surprised me given the fine grade of paper that I was using. I stopped at this stage to do some more research. I’m not sure whether I need to buy one of those buffing pads to fit on a drill or to carry on with T cut and polish. That's it for the first session. Not much progress really, sanded the back, t cutted and polished. It doesn't look much different to when I started other than a whole load of fine scratches. But have now got a gold anodized pickguard and pups on their way from BC members. Checking the sale forum and ebay regularly for a maple neck and tuners.
6. Wondered where you had got to. No advice from me, sorry. But wanted to say have a splendid trip.
7. Thanks Chaps. First things first then, I guess I need to ascertain what the finish is. I think it's probably poly laquer given that its a 90's japanese body. I've not absolutely made up my mind on the relicing thing, until recently I wasn't a fan but then tried a mex road worn and found myself liking it. I may still end up just trying to make it look like a 50's model that hasn't been played much!
8. I'm about to embark on a project for the winter months. I'm planning on putting together a p bass with a late 50's look, but I'm on a tight budget so not sure how authentic it's going to be. Anyway if I decide on the roadworn look the first thing I want to do is to relic/age the body, which is a 90's Jap sunburst. I've been checking out a few websites that recommend varying grades of wet and dry sandpaper all over, followed by a good buff up with T cut. At risk of sounding very stupid, would that actually achieve anything? What I mean is, if I sand down and then T cut, won't that just make it look all shiney and new again? I can't afford to be buying vintage tuners (can't believe the prices on Ebay), so advice on ageing tuners and other metal parts would also be appreciated. I have read about various acids, but it all sounds a bit heavy duty. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gary
9. I don't know mate. But I would certainly becareful of making a decision whilst feeling at a low ebb or down/depressed. Not that I'm saying you are, but if that were the case, then I would hold off. Right I'll clear off in case of causing offence. Gary.
10. Just received a very well packed fender p body and odds and sods from Old Horse. A gent to deal with and I'm delighted with my purchase.
11. Finding posts by a newbie going by the name Member 321. Probably not even a bass player
12. I used them for years, mainly as i didn't have to pay for them. That said I would have paid for them, they were good, getting them free was just a very nice bonus.
13.
Seems like a good deal: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mark-Bass-1x15-Sub-/...a#ht_500wt_1156
Yes it does. Will have to watch this one
14. I've got both. A while back I loved my Jazz and didn't play the P for months. Decided I was a J bass chap. Then picked up the P again and decided I'm more of a P bass chap. So no help to you at all. Thing is they are both good instruments, they wouldn't have been about for all these years otherwise. My advise would be to visit a decent shop and try a few. Quality can vary greatly. Try them unplugged, try them plugged in and both sitting and standing with a strap.
15.
Personally I think all three of the shape filters are a waste of time. Much prefer the Markbass VLE and VPF.
Yes same here, love the amp though, I just dont use the shape filters, mostly cos the lights are blinding
16. I was watching that auction with interest as I have the same model in very similair condition. Even though I thought it was slightly over priced, I was surprised that there weren't more bids. Congrats hope you enjoy.
17. Just checked out Emerald City Guitars, so wish I hadn't. All gassed up now.
18. That's an excellent find, looks loverly. I'm going to check out their website right now, not that I have any dosh.
19. Strange really, twenty years ago that's exactly the sort of thing I would have wanted. Now it's exactly the opposite of what I want.
20. My daughter just got herself an Ibanez. I've given it a set up and have to say it's an impressive thing. Lightweight and nicely balanced on the strap. I went along when she was rehearsing with her band and thought it sounded very good.
21. I remember having a chuckle at his sales blurb/description last time. Bit of a scalywag it would seem.
