1. That looks rather lovely Nothing to fear with Mexican instruments and some of them are exceptionally good. I've been working on a Mexican Strat this week and might even ask the chap if he would consider selling it to me. Hope the gig goes well.
2. Good job. It's very pleasing getting an instrument up and running properly isn't it?
3. New guitar incoming tomorrow, so this rather fine entry level Yamaha is up for sale. It played well enough when I got it but due to protruding saddles screws, it was very uncomfortable on the strumming hand. The bridge pick up didn’t function and the controls were noisy. Due to a few high frets and a poorly set up nut, it wasn’t possible to get a decent low action. I carried out the following works: Fully shielded the body cavities, with conductive copper foil. Swapped out the pick ups and controls, for a set from a 112 Pacifica. Levelled, crowned and polished the frets. Set up and refitted the nut. Rounded the finger board edges. Cleaned and oiled the fret board. Installed replacement saddle screws of the correct length. Fitted new D’Addario EXL 110 strings. I wasn’t keen on the white, single ply guard, so although not an essential job, I also installed a new 3 ply black pickguard and back plate and fitted replacement chrome volume and tone knobs. It now sounds and feels much better to play and is certainly giggable. The overall condition is very good but not immaculate, as can be seen in the photos it has polished up well enough though. There are a few dings and signs of wear to the paintwork but it is structurally good. The neck and headstock are very clean. All the controls and hardware function perfectly. I don’t have a case for the guitar, so collection would be preferred. Looking for what I think is a very reasonable £ 95, collected from my place in Herts. If postage is required, please contact me to make the arrangements. To reduce the risk of damage in transit, I will remove the neck, bubble wrap everything and pack in a sturdy box. Courier charge will be £15.99.
4. £75 or nearest offer. I'm going to persevere with an unlined neck, so this is up for sale. A decent quality lined fretless neck, taken from a Squier Vintage Modified P bass. With tuners and string tree. Maple neck with an Ebonol fretboard. 9.5 radius. Condition is good but not immaculate. A previous owner was not careful enough when filing the nut slots and managed to mark the finish behind the nut. Not serious damage but an annoyance, fortunately once the strings are on, it doesn't really show. It has obviously worn roundwound strings in the past, which have left some marks in the Ebonol but again they are not so obvious once the strings are in place. The photos show everything clearly enough. The black mark on the neck is not damage but a stain/blemish in the timber. Headstock is all good and the back of the neck has no dinks or other damage. Collection preferred from my place in Herts. If you want it posted then let me know. It will be sent bubble wrapped and in the box shown in the photos. Unfortunately the courier charge is £15.99. Bank Transfer or cash on collection. Thanks. 5. Great job Chris. I made use of your video for Grapevine a couple of months back, when I needed to get up to speed with it very pronto. Learnt it pretty much note perfect and then band leader decided to drop it after one outing and go for more of a Creedance version
6. This chap does absolutely brilliant work. Not Fens or London but on your route between the two http://www.guitar-works.co.uk/
7. Good day to you Andy, I've so far found Flickr very reliable and user friendly.
8.
Tiran is a monster bassist.... and a helluva nice guy. As a huge Doobie fan I've been honoured to get to know him as a personal friend, visit his house and play on his bass collection! He almost exclusively plays fretless these days and builds his own frankenstein basses..... I LOVE his playing on all the albums - but the Tom Johnston era (particularly Vices & Stampede) is my fave. He prefers his own playing on the 'Michael McDonald' One Step Closer though....
That's interesting that he prefers the One Step Closer stuff. A chap whom I would love to chat bass with.
9. Thanks for your usual high standard of review, sounds like a great piece of kit. I have the M80 and think it is superb, I know exactly what you mean about the distortion channel but by chance I found it to be very useful if used with the controls set very low. Instead of sounding distorted, it then just adds a pleasing, slightly overdriven/valvey sort of effect, well it does to my ears
10. I used a Markbass 12" cab with my Big Baby, I'm sure Alex from Barefaced would be horrified but it honestly sounded, to me, great
11.
If you want a bridge that is a little cheaper than the Gotoh I have a virtually unused high-mass bridge I'm thinking of getting rid of. It is like a Gotoh but the string-retainer block is solid rather than hollow as it is on the Gotoh. Also, top bass! I would stick a black pickguard on there!
You need to keep sale/trade offers to private messages.
12. Hope it's the one mate Look forward to seeing the full review.
13. Each to their own. I've not yet wanted to buy any of the artificially road worn instruments that I've seen. Some of them have played very well but I've not found them convincing to look at and I just prefer the real thing, vintage Fenders and G&L's.
14.
Isn't this part of what guitar shop assistants do.? Cant see them paying overtime for there hopefully knowledgeable staff to make sure what there selling works as it should. There is no excuse for instruments to be badly set up.
I wouldn't let a lot of the shop assistants I've encountered, go anywhere near an instrument with anything other than a plectrum
15.
When it comes to poor set up that really is the shop's responsibility. It amazes me that the one thing a bricks and mortar shop has over the likes of Thomann is that they can ensure every instrument from a beginner's cheapie, through to a custom shop Fender are absolutely perfect ( and still they don't)!!
I suspect the tight margins make them reluctant to spend out on set ups, even though it might well generate more sales.
16. I very nearly put in a last second bid but backed out
17.
I just picked up on this for the first time via another thread, and my interest is distinctly piqued! I'm in Sussex (so about as far 'darn sarf' as it's possible to get) ... is there anyone around here (or as far afield as London) who has one of these that I could try?
I'm hoping to get another one for road testing soon, will give you a shout when it gets here. I'm in Herts so a bit closer for you
18.
I just sent one back today as it was also over 11lbs I'll have to visit a shop.
Certainly the best way, there are some light ones out there.
19. I would just get comfortable with it at a slowish tempo, whilst building stamina and mastering the technique. You will then almost certainly find it much easier.
20. Love the Doobies rhythm unit, particularly on What were once Vices are now Habits album
21.
I need somebody (preferably in Herts) to earth the pick ups in a Spector fretless donated to the Herts Bash raffle - let me know if you can help (or direct me to a link which tells me how to do it)
I've sorted earthing, now just got to do some work on the nut and it will be ready for the Herts Bash next year.
