1. I've fairly successfully aged pick guards in the past. Plenty of info online on the various methods. Worth a try, unless you are happy to spend the dosh on the Spitfire one.
2. Wonder why they went with the shorter scale. Cheers Fran. Have a find day out there
3. That's interesting what you were saying about the Ibanez fanned fret thing. What is that they've not got right Fran? Just curious, I'm certainly not considering jumping ship from Dingwall.
4.
The passive sound of Pro Wal sounds just as good as its active version IMO. you'll get more tonal variations with an active circuit and perhaps a bit more pop, but the Wal sound, like Gary said is still there. I actually have a parts Wal bass i'm trying to put together and tested a Pro PUP that I acquired. If you want to get an idea of sound, here is a little thing I put together when i had test wires and such......believe the way i had it wired the pickup coils are in series (i show how i wired it in the beginning of the vid)....also the instrument jack is directly connected to the PUP so its as if everything is wide open. Will look forward to seeing and hearing the finished article ...........and time for a bump
5.
Wal all happened whilst I was not in the UK. They look a bit odd/naff like the JayDee things. What makes them that special? Good to play? Sound doesnt seem anything special from these examples. Enlighten me!
Tempting to move this one in to that other thread
6. For the ones who say that a Wal can't be used for rock/blues
7. Well done Trevor, good work Will have a proper listen later, just had a whizz through.
8. I love their Pro Steels, great strings. I had given up on Nickel strings in recent years, due to getting an allergic reaction when using them. My Jazz got a set of the D'addario nickels at the Herts Bass Bash and I was pleased to find, no allergic reaction and they sound and feel just lovely. Also their customer service is first rate.
9. Thanks for all the favourable posts gents.
How does the sound of the single PUP passive version compare with the twin PUP active? I find myself horribly drawn to this
In answer to your question Chris, I've not actually ever played a twin pup Wal, so I can't properly answer your question Being serious though, plugged in there's no mistaking that it's a Wal. I'm really not sure about moving this on. If I'm still as uncertain in the morning I suspect it might get withdrawn.
10. Wal Pro 1 1983. Four string, fretted. After much deliberation, I’ve decided it’s time to move on this lovely bass, although I reserve the right to change my mind. I’m not gigging with it and only get it out periodically to give it a polish and a play. I’m in no rush to sell and if it doesn’t go, well it’s not going to be a hardship to keep it a while longer, even it only gets occasional use these days. It was originally supplied by Wal to the shop, Gigsounds on the 26[sup]th[/sup] June 1983. I have owned it since around 1990/91. It is a passive bass, with the single Wal pick up and a series/parallel switch. Paul from Wal tells me that the body is Ash with some sort of Rosewood veneer. The fretboard is a lovely dark Indian Rosewood. As far as I know it is all original, with the exception of the bridge securing screws. I replaced them, as someone had managed to burr and damage them. For a Wal it is very light at just 9lb 6oz. Currently strung with a new set of D’Addario Pro Steel Rounds. Nice low action and buzz free. Frets are all good. Controls and electrics all present and correct. I’m selling with a decent quality hard case, although it is not an original Wal one. A previous owner did not treat it with kid gloves, so it does have some dings and signs of wear. Visible in one of the photos is an area of wear by the pickup and a couple of holes, presumably from a thumb rest. There are a couple of cracks within the lacquer on the rear of the head stock, this is fairly typical, I believe, on Wals of this vintage. There are also a couple of areas to the front of the bass that periodically fade. Not sure what has caused this but it is easily remedied with a quick wipe with Lemon Oil, I do this every few months to keep it looking good. There are plenty of photos down below. I haven’t got any under the pick guard or neck pocket pics but if required I can strip it down and take some. My price is a firm £2,100 Collection much preferred from my place in Herts. I will post if required but only with proper insurance and via the courier of my choice. Let me know if you want this option and I will provide a price. Any other questions or to arrange a visit please pm me. Now for the pics:
11. I was planning on buying a Fender Mexican P bass as a back up but I just find G&L's too hard to resist Happy to have another in the house, an 89 SB2
12.
They're undoubtably great basses. I've played one, but I like to play chords, so they don't work for me.
chords Fortunately they work for me but then I only play chords on my mandolin and acoustic guitar
13. Fender Reissue Tolex Case I've knocked a tenner off, so now its £105 Made in the USA by G&G For Jazz or P bass. As new condition, genuine Fender vintage reissue case, with keys. I can only spot one very slight blemish, which is on the underside and probably there from new. It is just visible in the second photo, just below the handle. I’ve only had this a few months and it’s not been out of the house. Purchased with a particular bass in mind but that has now sold. Price is £105 Collected from me in Herts. Or I can box it up and post. Charge will be an additional £15.99 Bank Transfer or cash on collection. Pay Pal if you’re willing to pay the fee. 14. I'm not usually a fan of pointy basses but have to say that one is a handsome beast
15. Very happy to recommend Mark. No messing about, good comms and a great chap to deal with.
16. The usual difficult load in and out, due to drunken punters gathering around the doorway and in a little narrow corridor, which is just about wide enough for my cabs. We played well, although I had a couple of brain blanks, strangely, in the numbers that I've played countless times in just about every covers band that I've ever been in. I'll put it down to the strong pain killers, combined with Sudofed and Imodium Getting a bit jaded with the pub scene. Roll on next Saturday when we do it all over again in another pub just down the road.
17. The position of the pups has a big impact.
18.
A set of Slade and a set of other 70s/glam material for a tribute band gig on Sunday.
Great fun I should think
