I've tried a little bit of recording my bass using it onto Audacity on the P.C. which worked well. When using it to play bass and listen via headphones, I've found that I have to back off the volume and gain and also keep the bass lowish, otherwise there is a little too much distortion. Be interesting to know whether things can be turned up more, if using the Phil Jones headphones.

I just treated myself to a Phil Jones Headphone amp. Covers all the requirements that you listed.

Another BC'er that I'm happy to recommend. Very helpful, friendly and a man who knows how to pack a bass for safe transportation.

I guess if it was me and really couldn't decide, I would be making a list of the pro and cons and considering practicalities. Also I would be thinking about where I would most likely be using it the most e.g. If I knew that most of my gigs were to be in cramped pub type situations, with difficult load in/outs, then I wouldn't be going for a big valve amp and an 8x10" set up.

I also agree that that cables don't have an influence on tone. Although of course, a decent cable will accurately transmit the lovely tone, generated by your choice of instrument and strings etc.

I'm sure we all experience this at some point. I most certainly have. On the plus side though, it has always inspired me to try harder or work at improving etc.

You won't need to, unless you fancy upgrading the pots. If you do, give Kiogon a shout. He makes up high quality kits, consisting of everything you need. It will drop right in and you won't even need to solder your new pups in, as there is a connector which will allow you to screw the cables in.

We still do need to see some pics Anyone concerned about the fanned fret thing, really don't need to be. I have mostly over the years played Fenders, G&L's etc. and still do on a daily basis but last night I was rehearsing with the band and using my Dingwall, it was quite late in the evening when I even thought about the fact that the frets were fanned. It very quickly feels natural and intuitive. I was experimenting with the pick up selector and tone control a fair bit last night, as our set is very wide ranging and I fancied trying to nail what I felt was the right tone for the various styles. Have to say I was pleased with the outcome and was worth the time/effort. To my ears it nailed the Jamerson vibe when required, the bloke from Muse, Bernard Edwards on the Disco and so on. The tone control has been upgraded to a Stellar tone unit, which gives nine (I think) very usable different settings. Really good piece of kit to add to a passive instrument and available from Bass Direct.
