1.
There is no 'rule' for that i think, but if you want to create one, here is my experience. The tele made of ash is mostly heavier than alder, but this depends on what kind of ash is used. The 60s p i have held and own are really light, as well as the earlie 70 ones. Following the timeline in the 70s the basses get more heavy, but as i said before, there is no asolute rule about that. Against the myth, that a bass that weighs a ton has also a tone of a ton is not right. The best sounding basses i have heard are the light ones, They are more resonant. But to make my words senseless, i have heard also amazing basses which seem to be made of ironwood
Absolutely spot on, this is also my experience. Best bass i've ever played was a very light 1961 Precision.
2.
Wow, if this is all original then it's a good £500 under-priced, maybe even more. I've seen refin 4 bolt 70's Fenders priced at clost to £2K. Looks like a '73 to me, can't remember when the long G bridge saddle was removed?
Even i'm not 100% sure on that although I think it is original. However, this guy on Talkbass has a 73 precision and his has the long G by sounds of of, so it looks correct to me. I have underlined his quote Here: Quote: Originally Posted by JTE Other than the date-codes on the pots and the dates on the pickups, these items simply didn't change for a LOT of years. I don't understand why anyone would WANT to, let alone be able to, tell the difference between a '73 thumbrest, PUP cover, or bridge versus a '74, or a '76. Heck, most of those are so generic a current replacement would generally be indistinguishable. John I just got a 73 P and have been doing some investigating on the parts used that year that differ from later years. First thing is the thumbrest. Its not black like the one used in later years, its a very dark brown/maroon color. On the P basses, their pickup and bridge covers have more angular bends than later years as well. I dont know if its the same for Jazz basses though. ****The bridge has the long g screw, so a reissue bridge or later 70's bridge isn't exactly "correct"***** Also if you're looking for a pickguard, i believe 73 was the last year they had celluloid tortoise shell. My P-bass has a celluloid guard that's shrunk over the years and developed a tiny crack. I will say that it is still the nicest looking tort I've seen, even though its got plenty of wear. Good luck with your search. Ebay seems to be your best bet. I myself only need a thumbrest, pickup and bridge cover, and possible a case. Everything else on mine is all original. Last edited by thisSNsucks : 01-20-2011 at 09:59 AM.
3. And here is another....... http://www.normansra...9&cat=45&page=1 I'm pretty sure you can't always authenticate a basses age, based on where the thumb rest is. Tony (cameet) is correct about the neck date it is from 1972 and is typical of Fender using older parts.
4. Of course i'm sure. Here is a 1973 jazz exactly the same see where the thumb rest is. http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/our-catalogue/fender/electric-basses/item/7602 The one i'm buying is also on the top but moved slightly in the past, obviously to suit the player's needs.
5. Sort of Parker Fly-ish, but a bit too weird for me.
6. Yes, it's me who is buying it! thanks Tony! I am a very lucky man. Oh, and it is a 1973 Jazz bass not 1974. Pots also indicate 1973 serial no' 502*** indicates 1973. http://home.provide....der.html#serial
7. Tough it's mine! mwaaaah well hopefully!
8. Wow that really is nice and welcome to Basschat.......What a first post! PM sent.
9. It looks right to me. The neck dates it to 1962 and the headstock logo is correct for 1962. If he get's to keep it he's a very lucky guy, assuming it's not a hoax!
10. A friend of mine had one of these with his Les Paul back in the day. He dropped it down the stairs, ran down in panic, took out the guitar expecting it to be trashed, but......NOTHING! So I can vouch for these. Good luck with the sale mate.
11. I think the word "genius" comes to mind.
12. So sorry to hear about this, let's hope that it gets returned.
13. That's sad to hear Clarky. It's always gutting when this sort of thing happens, especially when you put your hear and soul (and cash!) into it. Take a breather, i'm sure something else is waiting around the corner for you.......maybe even better than before.
14. Secondhand Laney VC30 or a newer alternative, a Vox Nightrain, Francis Dunnery (ex - It Bites uses one of those).
15. The guitarist and drummer in this band are also in my band In For The Kill.........(Dan the bass player is also a mate, and he is a fellow Basschatter! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqX1f7IJ3wo&feature=related
16.
Any of your band mates uploaded a youtube vid or soundcloud track that your proud of or just makes you smile? Here's my guitarist
Hey Charic, that reminds me of a guitarist who works at my work-place. His band is called Merciless Terror.......here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqiYqfraRwI
17. We usually play locally anyway so the drive home isn't a chore for me. I'll normally put the old cd's on and it's quite nice and relaxing. I'm normally alone but very occasionally i'll have a mate with me, never the band mates as they have their own cars. I just hate taking all the gear back upstairs afterwards and packing it all away. It takes an age for me to get to sleep usually. I wouldn't change a thing!
18. The colour reminds me of Autumnglo. It's not my fave colour by any means but it's still a Ricky! and i've seen far worse.
19. Another fan of lemon oil here but I can't use it on my Ricky bass of course. I currently use Planet Waves.
20. I use EzDrummer for recording it's very good at what it does.
21. Nobody famous i'm afraid. A mate from school, Kevin Brown was playing sax in The Beautiful South. Not musical, but Leyton Orient football manager Russell Slade was my footie team captain at school.
22.
One of the bad ones, and not in a way that I ever expected. We play a once-a-month slot at a local pub and have built up a healthy crowd. Last night I had to make the announcement that we were a duo, rather than a trio, because the drummer's wife had died two weeks ago. She was 32 and collapsed and died at home, alone, due to a blood clot. Totally out of the blue. Craig, the drummer, is devastated, as you would expect. Particularly as they'd only been married 18 months. She always came to see us, and we dedicated the gig to her.
That is really sad, sorry to hear that Len.
23. Very nice!
24.
Thank you bluejay, I'm taking a look at it, it seems to be interesting. Are you from London? Clark are you italian?
No, but it seems i might have American / Italian decendants though! Someone at work had started teaching me some Italian but he left and unforunately I didn't continue. Oh, and it's Tony actually! I thought it would be nice to greet you in your own language to make you feel at home here.......It looks like you are fluent in English anyway. Welcome!
25.
I actually quite like that.
Me too.....but in NO WAY would I have altered a 4001CS
