1.
I have never oiled a fret board ever. Not once.
Yep...just like all the basses from the 60's and 70's were generally never oiled, and yet these days, are much sought after. They also look and play as good today as they did back then. There must be a message/lesson in there somewhere.
 2.
Totally off topic, but I love your avatar name...a County Clare man perchance?
Thanks. No...I'm from Dublin. I have being using Irish words as avatar names and passwords for a long time. I just thought "Coilte" had a nice ring to it.
 3. I think there is a big difference between "playing" every day, and practicing every day. How the time is used is very important. Some people spend maybe hours noodling around or practicing stuff they already know. IMO a half an hour to an hour spent on intense and focused practice, say twice a week ( though regularity is best...i.e. everyday) is more beneficial than an hour every day simply messing around on the bass. It's the quality...not the quantity. As for my self, I practice every day generally. I concentrate on practicing what I consider to be my weak points, as well as learning new songs for my covers band.
 4.
"Solid playing" is another thing I hear a lot
I have been described in this way on occasion. I take it to mean, no frills, bells, or whistles, but can hold down a groove.
 5.
I'm after examples which show that a pick doesn't always have to sound "picky" or as above (with the Rush example) fingers don't always have to sound "paddy"
If your friend is not convinced by the posts so far, he is a lost cause. Leave him to it. It's his loss.
 6.
that Beach Boys' sound is very obviously a pick isn't it
Carol Kaye, as mentioned earlier, played on a lot of Beach Boy's songs. One of note is on the intro to "Good Vibrations".
 7.
It's a shame he doesn't do private tuition. I'd definitely put the money together and travel once a month for a couple of hours of 1 to 1. Would love to know more about Scott, especially if he's taught anyone of note (badump-tsh). I feel confident in saying he's more than capable of shining in any company. Genuinely one of my favourite musicians.
I think he used to do lessons via Skype. Not sure if he still does, as his site takes up a lot of his time. He seems a very amicable and approachable guy. I'm sure if you sent him a message asking about the above or anything else, that he'd oblige.
 8.
Hey, I love Coilte, he introduced me to the floating thumb technique!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found the FT useful.
 9.
Pedantry would be picking up Colite's use of turning underrated into two words
I stand corrected and have amended my post.
 10.
Coilte, you seem to be getting awfully pedantic here.....
Perhaps. Personally, I don't really give a damn whether Mr Devine is a world renowned name or not. I just happen to disagree that he is underrated. I was merely giving the reasons why I hold this view. Pedantic...? If you say so...
 11. Perhaps you should create a poll.
 12.
I think what FD is inferring is that yes, Scott is known and respected within the bass playing community, but probably not so well known compared to other talented players in well known bands and such like; i.e. not rated as widely rather than rated poorly. But for Basschat, I probably wouldn't be aware of him.
Fair enough, I hear what you are saying. However, I think there is a difference between being not so well known and being underrated. The latter would infer to me that he is well known, but under appreciated. Yes, perhaps he is not as well known as he (and we...) might wish. I suppose this is to be expected when his main publicity outlet is teaching bass players, rather than say...promoting his band(s).
 13.
And yet still underrated.
Don't know where you get that from. I have seen many quotes about him, describing him as the best on line resource. However, I respect your opinion.
 14.
I think he's massively underrated.
I would not have thought so. The vast majority of opinions about him, that I've encountered, have been positive.
 15.
Luthier guru Dan Erlewine recommends cleaning the board with spit.
Always play with clean hands and you won't have to worry about cleaning the fretboard. Plus, the natural oils from your fingers should be enough for the fretboard. In the 60' and 70's cleaners/conditioners were unheard of. Did not seem to do the bases of the time any harm. I see lots of such basses for sale and they look great.
 16. Move on...would be my advice. You can always try to find other social outlets that don't involve playing music.

 18. Sorry to hear about this. I personally have not experienced CTS, but I regularly read of people who have, and have come out the other end, reasonably OK. All you can do is to follow professional advice. It might be a good idea to let your band know that you may not be able to play those gigs. That way, they can have a dep on stand by. Hope it does not come to this. Best of luck.
 19.
I understand what's going on, so don't instantly think I need a new bass...
+1 to the above.. Often, as soon as I pick up the bass, even before I strap it on, I have a good idea of how my playing/practice session is going to be. Most times my perception is correct, but the odd time, after ten to fifteen minutes of playing, the "good time...happy feeling.." kicks in. On the other hand, I know lots of people, who, after a stressful day, look forward to coming home, strapping on the bass, and chilling out by practicing or playing along to music they like.
 20. My five in no particular order : Michael Hatzigeorgiou - Aka Moon Peter Cetera-(Chicago Glenn Cornick -Jethro Tull Alphonso Johnson Jack Bruce
 21. I think it's safe to say that of all instruments the bass needs to be with others to shine. If I were not in a band, I would still play the bass, but IMO a band is the best way to get a buzz from playing.
 22.
probably very useful but terribly uncool, reminds me of a baby harness for runaway toddlers!
Yep... perhaps it's uncool, but it depends on your priorities. Personally, I'd rather be uncool, and not be bent over with shoulder ache/pain after maybe two hours...plus..of gigging with a heavy bass.
 23. http://www.gruvgear....strap-signature Get yourself a harness type strap like this one, to help spread the weight. I have seen them at a cheaper price than this.
 24.
Which one is best for metals..?
You mean..thrash metal ?
 25.
I am a very new bass player
In that case, forget about modes for now. Concentrate on chord tones instead. Plenty of time to delve into modes when you have the ground work done.
the theory part of my lessons is moving more into modes
