American accent?
+1. Happy Jack....you obviously did not even look/listen to a second of the clip.... but were in like a light with one/two of your own.

"Talkbass's" Fergie Fulton shows us some (IMO) useful stretches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMmzs5sXYaE
Just gets better, doesn't it? You need to be up to performance speed in "alternative / indie rock , grunge, post punk, maybe some folk, funk, jazz etc.".
Never mind the players....what about the potential audience...? They'd have to be up to speed on a lot of genres. "Thank you very much....this next song is by "Fairport Convention"..and that will be followed by some Charles Mingus..!!!

I have two G&L basses....an L2000 ( 1.75" at the nut ) and a SB2 which has a jazz neck. While I am happy enough playing both, invariably I find myself drawn towards the narrower neck.

Out of control 'Lead' Guitarists vs Out of control Saxophonists
Coilte replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
the problem with Sax players (and Harmonica players) they don't know what to do when they're not playing, so they don't shut up,
Coltrane was one chatting to Miles about his (Coltrane's) extended solos and how he found it hard to bring them to an end.. To which Miles responded.."try taking the god damn horn out o' ya mouth.."!! -
I think it's a good idea to have somewhere for people to ask questions without feeling silly
People should not be made to feel silly for asking questions...no matter which section they post in. We were all "that soldier" at some stage. I agree with the OP that a sticky for beginners would be a good thing.

Sad news indeed. R.I.P.
True. I guess it's just made me think about it because I was really surprised by some of the reactions.
This is the Internet. You are always going to be surprised by the reactions of others. If YOU like a certain bass, then that's the one for you. Best of luck with your new "toy".
-
I suppose as I've recently bought/ordered a few versatile basses I've noticed a certain resistance from certain members to this kind of bass, so I thought I'd explain my personal reasoning behind it.
Why should you feel the need to justify a purchase ?
The Monkees?
Ha ha !!!...beat me to it.
As others have said I'd start with a thin pick since you're in a bit of a tight spot. It'll bend more as you hit the string so you won't have to grip it as tightly and you'll have less chance of dropping it because of this.
To each their own, but I'd recommend no less than a 1.5mm pick. Any thinner and the hand has to work harder to get the same sound. If the OP is gripping too tightly, then only time and practice will solve the issue.
-
Does anyone have any general tips on playing with a pick? Again, any advice on how to grip it?
Here is some advice from iconic pick player Carol Kaye. See tips #26 & 27 : https://www.carolkaye.com/www/education/tips1.htm
I'm 66 and 1/2 - what the heck does OFPFmean?
I'm 61 and 1/2..... one finger per fret !!!!
-
Yeh i get that, i thought of it as a good excercise to "connect" his fretting and plucking hand. I'll take that on board though. Excercise will still work playing it as 1,2&4 on each string. Cheers!
IMO the best way to teach the OFPF is to do it above the fifth fret..e.g. on frets 9,10,11,12. As he gets used to and comfortable with that, he can move down the fret board. Personally I always recommend using fingers 1,2 & 4 on frets 1-5.
-
Firstly, don't do 1 finger per fret. Start with 1,2,4.
+100. Playing OFPF on the lower (1-5) frets is too much of a reach for some seasoned players, not to mind someone picking up a bass for the first time. OP you asked why......: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXkxu_7Tn48

IMO the very first thing you should show him is how to hold the bass and how to play with a technique that will both enable him to play to the best of his potential and also avoid injury problems further down the line. Both are covered in the link I posted in post # 15.
So the question here is, where shall i start with him?
Here is the ideal thread from "Talkbass" on getting started. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/how-to-get-started.1098564/
'Warm-up' or not, too much is too much. Maybe more frequent/longer rests between sessions..? If it hurts, stop, or risk losing much more than you've gained. Break the sessions up, and change activity between them, I'd say.
+1 to this. I'd also consider if your technique is questionable. You say your wrist aches. Do you play with a bent wrist ? If so, this could be a contributing factor.

Being the old dinosaur that I am, I started to listen to music at a very early age on my parents "wireless". Later I started buying LP's and later still.. CD's. I have not really kept up with technology since that. I was never really into listening to music on the go. I love to chill out by listening on my hi-fi separates (told you I was a dinosaur.. ). IMO you cant beat listening through "proper" speakers.
I've bought the Korg Pitchclip, TC Polytune clip and the Planet Waves nano. For me the best of the 3 is the Korg. .
Glad to hear it. On the strength of this thread, I have just ordered the Korg.

To sell or not to sell that is the question
Coilte replied to smurfitt's topic in General Discussion
If you really need the cash and the bass is surplus to requirements...sell it. Simple as that IMO. -
There's something therapeutic about listening to music at high volumes, especially if you know that there's no-one else there and you're not bothering anyone. You can really get lost in the music and you can understand how music works at those sorts of levels.
Therapeutic !!!!!?????..... You are entitled to your opinion, but I just dont understand this concept. Perhaps I just have a special gift, but I can "understand" and enjoy music perfectly, when played at low volume.
