Scott Devine has some really good advice regarding GAS
Coilte replied to miles'tone's topic in General Discussion
But coming from a guy that sponsors a high end bass (and I love mine), and that repeatedly rants about economy of movement in the left hand... Try that on a chunky precision, see how much economy you get. His point is fair, but beginners should also be told some things about neck radius and profile, types of strings, PU position, etc having an immense effect on sound. To preach that it's all in the fingers is deceiving. Once you've reached a certain level, and with a decent instrument decently set up, it's mostly in the fingers - if you have some talent. That'd be more accurate IMHO. You will get to that level faster if you have a bass that suits you from the get go. Not any bass.
In fairness I dont think Scott (correct me if I'm wrong) said anything against getting a bass that suits you...or to pick up just any old bass. ..just not to make too much of a fuss about the bass itself, and instead to concentrate your time, effort and enthusiasm into learning it. I have seen great bass players pick up a "cheapie" bass and sound amazing. I have also come across mediocre players picking up a high end bass and sound....well....mediocre. Also, on his site he gives advice about choosing a bass.
Very good point. However, I'll put it from another perspective. My Mother used to have a colleague who's son has progressed through the Orchestral music profession very successfully. In the 80s when he was a young man he entered a music competition playing his oboe. Without being arrogant he knew from his performance that he was good enough to win. He came second and was gutted. The judges took him aside afterwards and told him they were making a special award to him of £2000 towards the cost of a new instrument. They knew he was of a higher class than the other contestants but felt the quality of his instrument let him down.
You make a fair point also, but I think we are splitting hairs here. Again, the message I drew from the clip was that solely concentrating on the guitar itself (I suppose you could also include FX pedals etc. here ) and neglecting other things like basic theory, technique, ear training, reading etc, is not the way to go. Granted, no one wants to play on an instrument that is not fit for purpose...the point being that it does not have to be "high end" to be fit for purpose. Lots of entry level basses (especially these days) are very playable and comfortable. -
I think the main point of his message was that he posted a video of playing, and more people were concerned about what he was playing on than what he was actually playing. As a bass teacher that must be a bit depressing.
Agreed.. and for that reason he was trying to get across the..." a high end bass does not make a great player"..message. -
Personally, I would go the extra £100 or so, and get a G&L SB2 Tribute. You may get cheaper on here if you wanted to go the second hand route. A winner either way IMO. http://www.ebay.co.u...=p2045573.m1684 http://www.glguitars...2_new/index.asp EDIT : One thing worth pointing out, that some may not like is that the pots are both for volume with no tone pot. If that's an issue then a slight upgrade would solve it.

The main message I took away from the clip..which some people seem not to have received.. is that a high end bass, or one especially made for you, is not going to make you a better player. -
Ooops i got a feeling of deja vu.
So do I. Going by the defensive responses on the "Jaco/Noodling" thread, it would appear that a lot of bassists are not able to handle other people's opinions on their heros....unless it is one of adoration.
Sadly, musicians still get treated like second-class citizens in a lot of countries - especially so-called 'Rock and Roll' musicians like Jaco and a lot of us on here, and what happened to him and the way the justice system in his own country failed him and his family, should remind us to support and celebrate our community of bass players just that little bit more, instead of knocking pieces off each other. Just my 2p worth.. But if he was still around, I'd happily have bought him a drink and shook his hand if I'd seen him after a gig.
Lets not get too carried away here. In fairness to the posters on this thread, they were merely making the point that his music did not appeal to them. The vast majority acknowledges his genius and his contribution to bass playing in general. I'm sure all will agree that how Jaco died was sad, tragic and unfortunate, though this should not be a prerequisite to liking his music. I'd also hazard a guess that the vast majority of the above people would also have shaken his hand, if they had been fortunate enough to meet the man.
I've been through every other example on this thread and I can't find anything else I like. It all sounds like "fret w***ing" to me, which I guess is the same as "aimless noodling".
Batten down the hatches Blue....another torpedo has been launched !!!!
-
BTW...it does not necessarily follow that if you like jazz/fusion you will like Jaco. I love, and have been listening to this genre since my teens (I'm now 61) and as I stated earlier in the thread, yes..Jaco was an amazingly talented player, but his music simply does not move me in any way. I much preferred Alphonso Johnson in Weather report.

Recording band rehearsals with a portable recorder
Coilte replied to Wilco's topic in General Discussion
Another vote for the Zoom recorders. I have the "H1" which is the basic version, and I'm happy with it. -
Bass is an instrument that really benefits from compression… so in my opinion you should all be using it!
While I accept that it is up to each individual to decide if compression is for them or not, differing opinions from experts like yourself and the guy in the link below, only goes to show how wide and varied people's views are. http://www.ovnilab.com/articles/necessary.shtml
A game-changer - a true genius. Even so, I can't bear to listen to most of his recorded material.
I agree. Most of his recorded material leaves me cold. Though, when you think about it, it is an odd thing to say about a genius and a game changer. It seems to be a contradiction in terms. Jamerson was also a game changer and a genius, but you seldom here the same comments about him.
-
You can't deny his influence, he completely changed the face of bass playing (along with Stanley Clarke) and while his work with Joni Mitchell is truly excellent and should be compulsory listening for any bass player, I find some of his work just leaves me cold.
+1.
Bass-lead-amp for me
Ditto here. Always thought I was in the minority. It would seem not, going by this thread.

Happy birthday to an often under rated bass player.

How long do your new strings retain their twang?
Coilte replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
bit of a faff taking them off to clean them!l.
Agreed. A lot of people keep two sets on the go. This way, there is always a clean set ready, when the other is due to be cleaned. -
Can anyone suggest anything to clean them with that might bring back a little brightness?
Soak them overnight is some mentholated spirit. Leave to dry for a couple of hours, wipe down, and you're good to go for a while longer. To help maintain the brightness, wipe down the strings after playing, with a cloth moistened with mentholated spirit. Be sure to put something under the strings (some plastic..for example) to protect the fret board. -
£15 for earplugs?! You must have money to burn! I just use those foam yellow ones typical in workshops etc.
You obviously dont think that your hearing is a priceless asset to have. People think nothing about spending hundreds of pounds on bass "accessories" but spend little or nothing on the most important one...your hearing...without which..would render all the other "accessories" redundant. Anyway, it's your hearing and so.. your call. I would advise people to spend as much as they can afford, to protect their hearing.

Glad that you are back.
Has anyone asked if this guy is maybe a mate as well as a band member?
If he was a "mate" in the true sense of the word, then he would take on board the other band member's suggestions and try to solve the problem, instead of dismissing their suggestions.

Jon Hiseman and Tony Reeves. Apart from their amazing work with "Colosseum", IMO they are the best rhythm section that blues man John Mayall ever had. Here they are on Mayall's "Bare Wires" album on the track "Look In The Mirror". On the section after the brief bass solo, I often switch the channel on my hi f to isolate bass and drums, just to listen to and admire their great contribution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnLOm74SoAM

are there any super bands with poor bass players?
Coilte replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Not exactly sure about what constitutes a 'Super Band'
My interpretation (correct me if I'm wrong OP) is of a band that is generally well known around the world, and fills large venues on a regular basis. -
I give it three minutes before someone mentions U2. Oh, wait, it's already happened!
I am by no means a U2 fan, as their music does nothing for me. Granted, Clayton's playing (AFAIK) has not been tested in another genre, but IMO he plays what the song requires.
