The other day I spent 6 hours going between my two bass heads
If you have not got "your" sound after six hours, perhaps your search lies elsewhere. Other things influence your over all sound...not least of which are the strings you use. Perhaps this is an avenue worth exploring ?

Cant speak for the Black Beauties but I love DR Sunbeams. Perhaps you got a faulty G string ? AFAIK, Dr has a very good customer service. You could try contacting them.
Was thinking about this last night. We have a special gig planned and I think a horn section will top it off. Trouble is we can't use them in the entire set...and so they will be expensive per song.. Really keen on the idea tho and I know the one I want isn't working that day... hmmmm
I'd jump on the chance, if it was at all possible. Just thought of another long running band with a horn section....."Roomful of Blues". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X-iLebWI0U

Another great band with a horn section springs to mind....."The Crusaders". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV28lBjo4TU

I particularly loved the horn section on Herbie Hancock's "Fat Albert Rotunda" album : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42wNF5kjWAU

Peter Cetera - Who was keeping this guy quiet?
The guitarist in my band has been banging on about the first two Chicago albums for a while and this thread jogged me to download them. For someone whose previous experience of the band was the the rather winsome ballad If You Leave Me Now when it was in the UK charts back in the 70s it's been quite a revelation!
Yeah, this happens quite a lot. Most people's idea of "Chicago" are songs like "If you leave me now". The music on their first three or four albums is light years different. After these albums, I lost interest in the band as their music steadily became more radio friendly. I particularly love Cetera's playing on "Introduction" from the first album. Someone asked about the pronounciation of his name. On an early live album, Terry Kath introduces a song and the singer (Cetera). He pronounced it as..."setERa " Here is Cetera in full flight on "Introduction" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V41bEZPo-J4&feature=kp -
Okies, got the missus to take another pic. http://s1235.photobu...104219.jpg.html When this was taken, the bass was in its normal position when I stand, and my thumb was dead centre to the back of the neck. So, is it looking like I'm holding my left hand in the wrong place? And if so, any ideas how program my brain to alter this? Thanks, John.
My suggestion would be when playing the E string, to move the thumb to slightly below the middle of the neck, drop the wrist down and forward, and finally, try to keep more of a curve on the fingers. This clip might help : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeRoQuXlj9w
Also did some great work with Gary Moore.
Yes, he did alright, though I always think that the music of "Blodwyn Pig" displayed his talent a lot better.
-
I was listening to some old "Blodwyn Pig" albums ("Getting to This" & "Ahead Rings Out") yesterday and admiring the great bass playing by Andy. AFAIK he is still playing. Not sure if he has been mentioned here on BC previously, so I thought I'd do so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVr2wMTfOYo
Seeking the approval of people you've never met & know nothing about sure sounds like insecurity to me, or maybe some form of masochism.
I think you may have missed my point, which was that by posting on You Tube, far from getting approval, you may get criticism (if you are lucky) or downright abuse...the last thing you'd want/need if you are insecure. As for machoism, it can be par for the course in some types of music.
-
I enjoy playing music but I have no need to be told how great I am by a bunch of strangers, I'm just not that insecure.
You are the way you are. That's fair enough. However, it does not have to be a sign of insecurity. Quite the opposite can be required in some cases when posting clips on You Tube. Even if you are genuinely good, you can still leave yourself open to all sorts of unwarranted criticism. IMO, to post anything on You Tube you need a neck like a jocky's b****x !!
There is a bit on his 68 come back show.. lots more I'm sure. https://www.youtube....h?v=zVaBVZaS7So

Yes. He played the bass intro (and maybe the rest of the song too) on Your So Square Baby I dont Care, asfter Bill Black couldnt do it and walked off in a huff. Elvis picked up Bills 57 p bass and the rest is history.
Thanks guys. I was never a fan of Elvis, and as a result I know little about his background.
-
Well he played guitar
Granted, he was always seen with an acoustic guitar strung over his shoulder. However, I dont actually remember ever hearing him play it.

Does anyone know if he could actually play ?
got a book on walking bass but find it hard going.
....which means it is a challange, so why not stick at it ? Walking bass is one on the best (and most enjoyable IMO) ways of practicing arpeggios. Most walking books come with a CD. If yours did not, then invest in an Aebersold play along as suggested earlier.
That's what our drummer asks us.
+1. I have been in two bands where the drummer was the only one who did not drive.
The cat is ok. He's got an ongoing kidney issue but is over the worst. He freaks out at the vet because he's a shy type of cat and gets really scared. I don't blame him at all as it's totally not in his nature to scratch or bite
Fair play to you for being so understanding and for caring so much for you pet. If only more people were like yourself there would not be the animal neglect problem that exists both in Britain and here in Ireland. It was tough what you had to go through physically, and aslo having to cancel your gig. Hope you are back rockin' soon.

Interesting thread in that if the shoe was on the other foot, i.e. a guitarist "suggesting" to a bassist what or how he should play (regardless of whether the "suggestion" was warrented or not) lots of people would be up in arms with things like..."tell him where to stuff his suggestion.." and phrases to that effect.

You could try practicing chord inversions. This is when different notes, apart from the root in a chord are the lowest sounding. For example Cmaj is CEG which is the root inversion. Starting on the third (E) is the first inversion (EGC). The chord is the same but starting on a different note gives it a different flavour. Here is a link to inversions : http://www.scribd.com/doc/2087887/a-comprehensive-chord-tone-system-for-mastering-the-bass-jeff-berlin Learning walking bass lines is a great way of opening up the fretboard and getting away form familiar patterns, even if you dont care too much for jazz. Below is a link to Dave Mark's series of lessons on WB. I think there are nine in all. Later in the series of lessons, he deals with inversions and gives some great exercises to get familiar with them. Learning walking bass will be beneficial when playing all types of music. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dave+marks+walking+bass Finally, here is yet another link which contain lessons about connecting chord tones. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=scott+devine+connecting+chord+tones Sorry for the lack of personal input, but these lessons explain things a lot better than I ever could. Hope you get as much benefit from them as I did.
Ultimately the most important members in any band AFAIAC are the ones who write the songs I like the best.
I agree. However, you may not have liked those songs quite as much had they not being interpreted and performed a certain way by top class musicians. AFAIK, the great James Jamerson wrote little or no songs. Yet at one time he was not allowed to leave the studio to tour, in case some major artist wanted to record. Most artists at the time, wanted him and only him as the bassist on their songs. Chuck Rainey did not write any of "Steely Dan's" songs, yet he was an integral part of the band for a long time. Just sayin'....!
I come from the school of thought that says "if you can't say what you want to say in 3 minutes, you're saying too much"
If the great John Coltrane was around, he would disagree. There is a story where, at a recording session with Miles Davis, Coltrane confesses..."when I go off on a solo, I dont know how to stop.." followed my Miles' quick retort..."try taking the horn outta ya mouth !!" As for jamming, I would agree with others in that it depends on the band.

Another possible name that could be considered might be Meshell Ndegeocello.

In his book "Street Player: My "Chicago Story" drummer Danny Seraphine states that bassist Peter Cetera was regarded as one of the "better" musicans in the band. I'm surprised that so far no none has mentioned the elephant in the room....Jack Bruce..."CREAM".
