Dean Pace Upright Stick Bass - Now Moved to Basses
davehux replied to davehux's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale

I've got a pair of sunburst VM fretted & fretless, and as you now know, they are great guitars. I've put Gotoh bridges on mine, plus Rotosound Swing and Jazz strings, and they sound immense.

Hmmmmmmmm.........I wonder if it will reach the end of the auction if it's well below that with a couple of minutes to go. Starting to see this more and more now, even though most auctions get bids in the last 30 seconds

One to watch if you're in the mood for a 10 string Chapman stick. Low start and no reserve http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-String-Rosewood-Chapman-Stick-Mint-Condition-better-than-7-8-string-guitar-/180991370820?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2a23ed2644#ht_545wt_1186

She's put the details on there now. Horrid picture

That's positively brimming with information compared to one of her other listings http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/painting-/170919884517?pt=UK_art_Paintings_GL&hash=item27cb9e76e5#ht_500wt_1156

I don't think you can beat some live videos. If the band are bouncing, look good, and plenty of punters are leaping around having fun, then I'd be more interested in booking you (in a theoretical sense) than some studio tracks - good as they are. IMHO having a live band at your function is all about performance and audience interaction rather than pure musical skill. I like the 'wanted poster' look, but it may be a bit too intimidating for someone looking for a 'nice' band for their wedding. Don't forget, it's not the bride & groom you have to please - it's their mothers!!!!! I'd go and see you in a pub, but I wouldn't book you for a function unless I knew what you looked and sounded like on stage Hope that helps (or not)
-
As has been said before - unless you sh1t yourself and then burst into flames on stage, no-one notices the bass player (or what they play) i get the basics right and then add a bit of stuff that makes me happy

Is it a bass, or is it an EUB? Well I'll try it in both places and see who bites 35" scale length, so fretless bass players will have no problem with fingering (don't!) The ball joint on the stand gives a large range of playing positions, and locks tight, so no slippage even when the neck is cranked over. You can almost get it down to electric bass angles to help you get started on it. Pretty good condition - you can see my grubby fingermarks in the photo, but it's free from any bad dings or dents. Comes with its original semi-hard case and the spanner for adjusting the main stand height. The stand height can be then be fine tuned with the normal finger clamp. I've fitted a Hollis GX10 preamp into it, to lower the impedence and give it a bit more boost, but it's a 2 minute job to unsolder it if it's not your thing. It has a single volume control - nothing else, so knob twiddlers will have little to interest them. Sounds more like a DB than an electric, with loads of sustain and a mwwaah that grows out of the end of any held note. £350 collected from Truro, Cornwall, or add your choice of courier on top if I need to send it to you

You need to get a continuous ground/earth. Line the pup and control cavities with the tape, overlapping it so that it's totally covered. If you have a pickguard, there may be a channel for the pup wire to the control cavity. If so, line that as well and ensure the tape connects all the cavities. If there's no channel, you'll need to solder an earth wire from each pup cavity lining to the control cavity lining. In the control cavity, put a little lip of copper on the edge in a couple of places so that it makes contact with the control plate (assuming it's a metal plate) This will then complete the earth circuit to the jack socket and earth on the guitar lead. Sounds trickier than it actually is, and it really does kill that annoying hum
-
Did 3 of my basses with a 4m reel of copper tape for £6. Totally killed the hum and only took about 30 mins per guitar once I'd got the hang of it ;-) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390468328691#ht_981wt_922

This guy has a limited range of valves, but they are a great price. I paid £24 for a set of 4 brand new, matched, Sovtek EL84's including shipping. Took 15 days to come across the pond via UPS, so don't buy if you need them in a hurry. They were well packed and work perfectly. Friendly guy to deal with and good comms. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/bmsanborn/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

Just bought a Line 6 G30 and the sound quality is superb. The transmitter is really light and you just don't notice it clipped onto your belt. My receiver Is down on the pedal board. I like the fact that it has no external aerial to snap off. Just looks like another pedal. My house is old and most guitars have some hum from mains interference when on a lead. None whatsoever when using the G30. Several people have commented about the battery cover, but unless you are a bit rough or ham fisted, it doesn't look too flimsy to my eyes. There's always Gaffa tape to keep it shut! Only got it today, but so far, very impressed

Finally got to give the little chap a proper workout with the full band at our practice last night, using my Ashdown MAG410 cab. It was up against a guitard who only knows one volume (LOUD!!!), keys, big drums and vox. No problem whatsoever in being heard. Lead plugged into the active socket to drop the gain, volume at 11 o'clock. Lovely valve lushness with almost no overdrive on it at all. Floor rumbling bass, plenty of top to cut through the mix. These really are the dogs donuts. Gigging it tomorrow in a small pub, which will be the same sort of volume as last night - can't wait!!!!!

He's at it again - MDP eat your heart out
davehux replied to davehux's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
He must have got Stevie Wonder to help him with that neck joint. Why is someone wasting their precious and limited time on this planet, by churning out unplayable lumps of crap like this? -
We use 2 studio/rehearsal rooms, depending on which is available. Both are £10/hour, but one has a minimum charge of 3 hours whether you use them all or not. One is in the basement of a large building in town, with limited parking. The other is a Portacabin on the edge of a small industrial estate in the country, with plenty of parking right outside. Both have a reasonable drum kit, but our tub thumper brings his own snare and cymbals. One has 2 x combos (bass & guitard), the other has 2 x head/cabs. Our guitard like to use his own amp, so has to bring a cab along as well for the combo. The basement is dark, dingy, hot and smelly - but has a good acoustics. The owner is very laid back, and we've ha a few issues with him turning up late to let us in. They use SM58's and a full recording studio type mixing desk for the PA The Portacabin is clean and bright, but the sound isn't as good. The owner is there waiting for us and everything is right on the money. The mics are Happy Shopper quality but the mixer is small and easy to use. So, in essence, we would like...... Good parking Clean, but not sterile Someone on the ball with bookings and letting us in Heads/cabs not combos Half decent drum kit Proper mics Easy to manage PA/mixer Over to you

Looks a bit like someone has taken a fretsaw to a Westone or Aria

I've got an HA3500 with a 410 and 115 cab and I've never had the bugger above 4 on the volume knob, no matter how hard the guitard and manic drummer try to play. Some serious power in that there box

Just received a couple of valves from Gareth. A more friendly and trustworthy seller would be hard to find. Many thanks

All that swirly inlay is giving me double vision

And so we now have the results of the Little Bastard Valve Swapout Test 2012 The volume control starts in the 7 o'clock position for no volume. All settings are based on that datum. No1 - ECC83 x 3 - breakup at 9.00 - total distortion at 12.00 No 2 - 2 x ECC81 in preamp. ECC83 as driver - breakup at 12.00 - total distortion at 2.00 No 3 - 2 x ECC81 in preamp. ECC82 as driver - breakup at 2.00 - total distortion at 3.30 Whoever worried that this little pocket rocket couldn't hold it's own in an average pub/club band, really should hear one in action. They are 'king loud, and playing with the valves gives so much more scope to find your own level of graunchiness than an SS amp
There's a GK MB150S in the FS section. That'll have the best tone for a small amp.
+1 from me - they have an amazing tone, loads of controls, easy-ish to lug about (compact, but not featherweight) and a built-in chorus for added fun A pocket rocket amp-nerd fest
