ChangesTwoBowie - Set Evolution
pete.young replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Difficult to get that balance of the later years: according to Wikipedia, since Absolute Beginners in 1986, he's had only 2 top 10 hits, Jump They Say and Where Are They Now. Certainly while you are building up a following, you'll need to play things that the non-Bowie fans will be familiar with. That probably means including stuff like Dancing In The Street. How good are your vocalists? I'd love to have a crack at Under Pressure, but we don't have anyone who can sing the Bowie part. -

Don't see many of these about: a flightcased Burman Pro 4000 and matching Burman 4x12 cab. Think the BIN is slightly optimistic, but who knows. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231440474340?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Just the thought of having to lift the cab makes me break out in a cold sweat!

Any excuse to repost this link to the story of the Burman 4x18, posted by Kiwi, no. 46 in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/58420-show-us-your-burmans/page__st__30__p__972632__hl__bumper%20brown__fromsearch__1#entry972632

Need to find a good acoustic for £300 - £400 price point
pete.young replied to jim_bass's topic in Guitars
I bought a Vintage VE300 for under 200 quid, mid-sized body, solid spruce top, plays and sounds great once I got it properly set up. Fishman pickup and pre-amp with tuner built in. Well worth trying one if you get the chance. -
90s sgc nanyo bass collection
This. There's a very nice example in the For Sale forum right now, for not a lot of money.

P Bass Pickup Placement - Help a Student Out Again?
pete.young replied to BruceBass3901's topic in Repairs and Technical
Front edge of the G-D pickup, or the A-E one? Some Fenders and Yamahas swap them round too. Since the cases are different, it seems more engineering to use the pickup centreline as your measurement. -
The Tecamp Puma solution is quite neat - a steel rod is supplied which you stick into a little socket on the back of the amp. It then tilts back so the end of the rod and the edge of the cab are incontact with the floor. There's a picture of the XS112 cab which also has one here. http://www.talkbass.com/threads/tecamp-amplification-club-is-there-such-a-thing-yet.617564/page-21

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
pete.young replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
The full price B30 is a 24 fret neck. The deco B30 is a 23 fret neck. Comparing the photos seems to suggest that the 23rd and 24th frets are in the same position on both models.
Both are 24 fret its a typo in the description. Someone already debunked this earlier in the thread. -

I suspect the furniture making references are to the Musical Instrument course at the London College of Furniture Making, which has been one of the two main places to go to get a degree in this subject for about the last 40 years at least. http://www.thecass.com/courses/undergraduate/bsc-hons-musical-instruments The other place being the Newark school of violin making, which tends to concentrate on violins, woodwind and piano tuning. A friend of mine was a student there. My web search also threw up South Thames http://www.south-thames.ac.uk/courses/musical-instrument-making-and-repair.html If you don't want a 3 year course you can probably find some places offering a diploma so at least you have some kind of qualification that you can reference.

Strange courier collection arrangement, advise sought
pete.young replied to KennysFord's topic in General Discussion
I would never give anyone those documents for a bass sale or purchase unless it was for getting finance or something, what are you even going to do with them if the money is fake, what does a legit Polish driving licence look like? (I dont even know how to spell licence or license!)
Me neither. The polish for 'Driving Licence' is Prawo Jazdy. This confused the Garda, who had been writing it down as the first name and surname of drivers they stopped. For a time he was Ireland's most wanted man. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7899171.stm -
I have a Tech Soundsystems ND 4x12 which is the same width as my Burman Pro 4000. Both of these are probably going to be up for sale in the near future so keep an eye on the For Sale forums.

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
pete.young replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Decoration only banjo, anyone? http://www.thomann.d...g_banj_deko.htm
I thought I'd get in first and say that all banjos should be decoration only :-) This appears to be a much better instrument than the non-decoration model which costs 10 quid less - it has much nicer inlays and a better quality pot. -
I have been very disappointed by the lack of DB stuff at the shows, the only DB being the one on the Strings & Things stand which is there to sell DB strings.
In fairness, it is the London BASS GUITAR Show. I'd like to see Yamaha amongst the exhibitors: finding their basses to try is quite hard in my experience. I can't believe that they can't afford the show fees.
Haha, I so agree with that. LBGS guys, the single massive improvement you can make to the show is seriously enforcing the 45 minutes to the hour (or whatever proportion is deemed appropriate) silence rule. Nobody seemed to do that on any of the previous years, and loud slapping and excessively high volume were constant, and that is costing you the goodwill and custom of many, many potential visitors.
Plus one for this. I didn't attend last year for precisely this reason.

2-channel preamp for acoustic- where to buy?
pete.young replied to cameltoe's topic in Accessories and Misc
Talk to Max at sfx sound - he has made a very nice 2-channel rack mount pre-amp and he will also be able to build something with the right input impedance if you're suffering from the usual piezo transducer impedance mismatch. -
Basses In/Basses Out 2014 - And What You've Learned......
pete.young replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Out: No basses One accordion One banjo In: No basses (I was going to say Duesenberg, but that was last year - where does the time go?) One Roland digital accordion One much nicer banjo Several Zoom pedals, before I settled on the M60B A set of decent round wounds for my Precision, which have replaced the TI flats that were killing the sound :-) What have I learnt? That I'm mostly happy with the basses I have - like Mick McCarthy, I don't see much out there to make an improvement for the money I have to spend. -
We have a gig this NYE, first time for a lot of years. How do others go about stopping in time for midnight, and what do you do about playing the chimes from Westminster? Radio? Fake it with a keyboard sample :-) ?
