Just read his comments about using a heat sink for transistors and diodes when soldering. Whoops. I seem to have got away with that one until now. What do people do for this, clip a croc clip onto the wire or something?
-
That looks nice Si. Is that the Big Beefy? (Can't quite figure out some of Poodle's naming conventions!)
-
Thanks Si - not sure what I'm going to use it for, it was one of those things where the journey was more important than arriving at the destination. I might plug the bouzouki into it and see if I can do a PIL impression. It's the standard kit with no mods: both buffers and one diode for symmetric clipping.
That bit sounds like an NE1 at least doesn't it ?
I'm getting a bit confused here :-) I'm not quite sure where the NE1 fits into the scheme of things, or what elements of that circuit are common to the basses. The original Nathan East Signature bass had controls for bass boost/cut, treble boost/cut and a 3 position mid selector (and also blend and vol). The BBNE2 has a 3-band EQ (Bass, Treble, Mids all boost/cut) plus an additional mid-cut frequency control and a switch to turn it on and off. The NE1 pedal seems to be a combination of the two. There is a circuit for the NE1 pedal and a veroboard design produced by paulatlabs, and I think Max at SilentFly published some mods to it in the Affiliates forum, but I've not seen a design for either of the bass guitar pre-amps.

Hopeful is-there-any-news type bump?

That looks marvellous. Well done Xilddx and uncle Horrid.

Spent this afternoon finishing off the Pedalparts TS808 kit that I got from Bigwan . Here's the circuit: Apologies, a bit out of focus. Guts and finished pedal: The kit didn't include a battery clip or a stereo socket as per the instructions, and I can see why now: there isn't room in the enclosure for a battery. Other than that, no problems putting it together, everything went like a dream. Thanks to Tom for helping me with the info about pots.
Isn't the Yamaha NE1 just the pedal version of his pre? Or just the mid-shape? (Not looked at the bass layout) Si
The NE1, I have no idea. The NE2 pre-amp is different - it has 3-band EQ plus a mid-cut frequency that you can switch in and out.

Can a real man wear a...*Purple Metal Flake* Flea Bass?
I'd gig it!
I think it's only fair to point out that you did buy that green Yamaha because you liked the colour, to add a bit of balance :-) Seriously, I think this bass looks stunning and if I could cope with the full-on nature of these basses, it wouldn't bother me a bit. I once had a go on Kiwi's Sonic Hammer, and boy did that thing have a serious attitude! Someone will be along in a minute to tell you it'll look much nicer with a tortoiseshell scratch plate. -
Now the brand is one thing.... but sadowsky, aguilar, alleva copollo etc, their two band on board preamps - everytime you hear about them they are "the best preamp ever" - I wonder how, different can the cuircuit schematics and parts of a two band preamp be? like at the end of the day it's going to be a shelving (?) eq at a certain frequency and a certain Q value. Where does the "magic" of the sound come from?
I think there's probably more to pre-amp design than meets the eye. If I were going to build a pre-amp, I think an interesting starting point would be the one in the Yamaha Nathan East BBNE2 . I'm lucky enough to own one of these and in my opinion it's the best sounding bass I've ever heard, which must have something to do with the pre-amp. The pre-amp circuit and a list of all the components is included in the Yamaha Service manual. I think it would be an interesting project to build one of these - obviously you wouldn't need the active circuits on the pickups, but the rest of it seems feasible. It's a long-term project to take the circuit diagram, stick it into TinyCAD/VEECAD and see what the layout would look like. The service manual also includes the Yamaha PCB design but I think reproducing that would be beyond my abilities.
I've been fired for 'not having long hair', when in reality it was to get someone's mate in (who then cut their hair short!)
I didn't get a gig once, on the grounds that 'so and so has really good gear'. At the time I was using Markbass and EBS gear that was easily the equal of drummer's mate's epic Trace stack but only 1/3rd the size and weight. It turned out to be the right decision all round though, with hindsight I could never have worked with said drummer nor he with me. I did get the DCM (Don't Come Monday!) from a C&W job once, guitarist and I decided the reggae version of 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' was more interesting and relevant. Singer/Bandleader didn't agree! Usually all this stuff happens for a reason and the reason is often that there's something better waiting round the next corner, as others have said. In the words of the immortal Thomas Waller, "Son, don't let it bother you!"

Something doesn't sound right though - I thought that production stayed in Japan until well after 1991.

Nice one. Just found your other thread in Bass Guitars. Good result all round I reckon. Well done.

I have just put some Status half-rounds on my Duesenberg, which is a short scale with a similar tail piece, and they needed to be medium length. You need to measure the distance from where the string goes in the tail piece to about 1" above the nut, and this gives the 'speaking length', the minimum distance between the ball and the beginning of the windings. You will probably find that you need to cut the string about 2 - 3 inches past the string post before you fit it.

Who has the best / poshest SGC Nanyo Bass Collection on here?
pete.young replied to bagsieblue's topic in Bass Guitars
You need to look in the 'Musical Backwaters' thread for the truly rare examples. Someone had an 800 series and there was a guy who used to post on here called Karim who had a 600 series with LEDs . I have an SB465 which has been modified with a 2-band Nordstrand pre-amp and a GK-3B Roland pickup, also a natural ash SB320 fretless. -
Another problem with the way this has been implemented: normal users can't reply to posts, even to their own posts. So no bumping. Except that mods are allowed to reply to posts. Including thier own posts. So no bumping, except for mods. That doesn't seem fair or equitable .

How did it go Luke? Just over £300 seems to be a very good deal for someone.
Hi Pete, With the pot lugs facing you and the pot shaft facing up, the lugs are 1-3 left to right. The metal tab allows you to drill a second hole in the enclosure for this to slot into. Chances are you'll want to snap it off with some pliers and forget the second hole. Hope that helps! Tom
Hi Tom, Yes, that's very helpful, I can now see what I need to do to finish the build off. Many thanks for your reply.

Recent purchases mean that I'll have to stick with my similar-vintage BB800 .

Si I love your artwork! I'm working on a pedalparts TS808 kit and I have a couple of questions about pots. Firstly, there's nothing on the pots to identify which terminal does which. Pots are 'Alpha' like the ones in Si's DAM Meathead and Fuzz Face. PCB has 3 connections for each pot, outers are labelled 1 and 3, middle is presumably 2 but isn't labelled. Is there a wrong way to connect these up? Secondly, the pot has a cast alloy lug sticking up next to the shaft which stops it sitting flat in the enclosure - presumably I can just file this off to get the pot to seat properly, or is there something missing? Kind regards, Pete

This looks to me like a BB1200, from the date and the pickup configuration. In original case, with tools and an unfitted clear perspex pickguard. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=181238563983 I know there's some love for these here, so hopefully someone will be able to pick this up. Definitely not crap, so deserves its own thread rather than going in the Japcrap one.

So AnnoyingTwit, did you get any response? My son is going to Norwich and could pick it up next weekend for you , then you would only have the problem of how to get to Ipswich instead of Norwich!
