South East Bass Bash No.7, Surrey, Saturday 21st September 2013
pete.young replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
Just a word to the wise ... don't take a DB/EUB to a jam session unless you're ready to play Superstition on it.
Could be worse. Could have been Sir Duke! -
Is there anyone here who has an Epi Les Paul bass and the case that goes with it - I believe the model number is 940-ELPBCS ? I'm hoping to find someone who can take some measurements of the case. I have a similar-shaped bass and I'm hoping it will fit the Epi case, which is a lot cheaper than the alternative.

New Bass Collection models - Anyone tried them or own one?
pete.young replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
The current crop of Bass Collections are nothing to do with the SGC Nanyo basses - it's the Bass Centre using the brand, that's all. I think the new stuff is made in China. The original SGC Nanyo operation, based in Japan, stopped making basses around '95 - 96. I've not seen or played one of the new ones so cannot comment on the quality. -

Not sure what this is, maybe Yamato/National ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Guitar-/290983559659?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43bff8c1eb My LP-shaped GAS is now firmly in check, so I'm not going to bid. -
Any suggestions for things to try on my newly acquired Duesenberg ? It's a short-scale bass requiring medium-length strings, which cuts the options down a bit. I'm thinking that it'll need at least 45-105 , looking for something to bring out the acoustic qualities whilst retaining some of the dark sound that it seems to have at the moment (has what look like 50-110 stainless rounds on at the moment).

Matt bought my Diago Showman board - he turned up exactly when he said he would, paid cash. He's an extremely pleasant chap and a pleasure to deal with. Recommended.

Roland Cube will be worth a look, as will the Yamaha THR10X (the one with the bass model) . If you can stretch to 300 you should be able to pick up a second-hand PJB briefcase.

Blimey, if I were you I'd go a buy a lottery ticket before your luck changes! -
There is a cracking little book called Basic Live Sound by Paul White that is cheap and is a great read for anyone starting off. Highly recommended. Have fun with it.
+1 for this, I found it a really good read and very helpful.

Based on the ebony board and the natural ash body i'd say this is an SB325 . The year is 1991 - that's from the first two digits of the serial number. I reckon you got a really good deal there, it's cleaned up beautifully. -

For sale - Fender Telecaster 72 Deluxe in moderately-hard-to-find Alpine White Cosmetically in good condition, with one dent about the same size as a straplock and another much smaller mark on the back. Neither of these affect the playability of the guitar in any way and they aren't visible while the guitar is being played. The neck plays very nicely and there is minimal fret wear. The back of the guitar is contoured for comfort whilst playing, a welcome addition to the Telecaster design. Also included is a used but serviceable Gator hard case. The guitar belongs to my son, who doesn't really want to sell it but is feeling the pain of London living costs. Now SOLD. Strap shown in the pictures is included in the sale but the straplocks will be replaced wtih standard strap buttons. Bass Collection 5 string - be quick
pete.young replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The 4-string fretless SB330 looks familiar, think it might be on sale here. I think £155 for the 5 was a pretty good price. It appears to have an ebony board, so is a better quality than the standard 315s. GregBass please explain to your mate how to string the B and G properly (ie the other way around the machine head post). -
Can anyone help with this? Frustrated :(
pete.young replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Index index middle for me. Wouldn't do index middle index because you've got a lot less time to go down to the E string than you have to go up to the D string. Or chuck it like Bernard, down down-up. -
Fender to finally make the Starcaster bass and reissue the Coronado?
pete.young replied to neepheid's topic in Bass Guitars
I've just been in Wunjos, today. They have three Coronado basses (sunburst, black and cherry) and one Starcaster. The guitar shop also has some of the guitar variants. I had a quick look and play on one of the Coronado basses. I have to say that the finish is exceptionally good, probably the nicest Chinese-made bass I've ever seen. The binding on the neck and around the inside of the F-holes is a really nice touch and is well done. Dont know the weight, but more heavy than I was expecting, probably because of the solid block in the centre section under the strings. Altogether it feels like a well-made and substantial instrument. The instruments have only been in for a couple of days and the setup hasn't been tweaked, but they're surprisingly playable for something fresh out of the box. Sound-wise, I'm not totally convinced. The standard setup has fairly light gauge round-wounds which run out of steam a bit on the E string and I think this bass is crying out for a set of flats to really do it justice. With the rounds, the tone controls don't seem to do a great deal, but all 3 pickup settings (neck/both/bridge) make a nice sound. I thought the output was a little puny, but I'm more used to active basses. I didn't look at the Starcaster, call me old fashioned if you will but I think it's a bit ersatz. Plus I really liked the block bound neck on the Coronado and think it's worth the difference. I guess if you were looking for this kind of bass, you'd also be looking at the Epi Jack Cassady and recent offerings from Italia Mondial, Gretch and maybe Hofner. BigRedX I don't know what that is (Warwick Star??) but it looks fabulous. -
I have a bass shipping box standing by, so UK shipping is going to be £10 - Interparcel standard next day. An off-peak return from Norwich to Ipswich is only £16, so you could make a day of it! Weight is 11lb according to my bathroom scales. 'Er indoors is convinced they err on the heavy side, I'm not so sure.
