1. Nice rig Nick, I have one of those cabs and I intend to be buried with it, or possibly in it! These days, you need to state an approximate trade value or the mods will be on your case.
2. I couldn't get past the left hand glove with the missing finger. What is all that about? The exercise is a bit contrived - I can play that just as fast using alternate index/middle all the way through without any rakes. The one in 'Sensitive' makes a bit more sense.
3. I think he probably means 'Alder', an equally unlikely claim!
4.
I know this is not a universally agreed approach but I recommend you read lots of stuff once, play it and, even if you get it wrong, discard the piece and read another one and another and another. Don't give yourself the chance to 'learn' what you are reading, just read it.
This is exactly the way that I was taught to sight-read, in the classical piano world. The other insight I found usefule was that it's not about the notes, it's about understanding the intervals between notes on the stave and how they relate to intervals on whatever instrument you're playing. It should require much less mental effort to look at two notes a line and a space apart and see that as a 4th, than to translate both positions onto the stave into notes and then work out the relative positions on the fretboard.
5.
I've never seen much sense in buying a lightweight rig and then carting an amp stand around with you.
The solution that Tecamp provide for the small Puma combos is light and effective: a 1/4" diameter hollow rod which slots into a socket on the back of the combo and allows it to be tilted backwards, and is stowed in a couple of clips when not required. Can't find a picture. FWIW, even if the maths say that a Gramma pad can't work, it does have a noticeable effect on boomy stages. I have no explanation.
6.
Our desk does have 2 aux outputs,
You need 2 pre-fader aux outputs, one for each mix. A post-fader aux output is not much use for a monitor mix because it changes when you adjust the FOH faders. Many small desks, such as the little Behringers, have one of each so you can only run one monitor mix. If I were you I would resist giving them the ability to turn it up themselves, because when it gets too loud in a small venue it can start to interfere with the level of the FOH mix.
7. I've seen both things: problems caused by an unshielded single-coil Strat which disappeared when he plugged in his humbucker-equipped les paul. We've also had an indiction loop causing problems with both bass and guitar backline which were solved by turning off the loop. If there is a loop, it MUST be turned off because of the potential damage it could inflict on the ears of an unwary passer by with a hearing aid.
8. Sorry to say that I had a popping noise from my Puma combo and it turned out to be a blown woofer :-( Hopefully yours will just be an eq problem.
9.
http://bit.ly/SUneVa
That one is in the 'For Sale' section here, without pictures (despite the fact that it doesn't appear to infringe any of the Rickenbacker trademarks).
10.
Or maybe we could offer Nigel Clutterbuck a seminar at the next Bassbash?
Along the lines of "How to play bass whilst wearing 16oz boxing gloves" ?
11. OK, well a quick bit of googling brings up this: http://www.contrabass.co.uk/about_the_double_bass.htm (By Peter Tyler, of Tyler Basses http://www.tylerbasses.co.uk/ ) I'm tempted to buy this myself, to find out how to lower the bridge on my upright since the action is much too high. And also this: http://www.violins.ca/books/bass_making_book.html I was only half-joking, I've met many violin-makers who won't touch double-bass because the size of the tools and physical effort required is too much.
12. Halloween coming up , so it's time to dust off 'Thriller'. Not, This year, I decided it would be cool if we could actually play the right chords in the break where the vocal goes: "... Thriller, diller, chiller, killer " .... There are six chords altogether: In C# minor, I've got A, F#min, A/B as the first three, B is the last and is tied before you go back into the riff. It's the 4th and 5th chords in the sequence I'm struggling with: I can hear D# and D as the notes in the bass, but struggling with the chords on top: maybe D# dim and D6 ? If anyone knows this or has accurate sheet music I'd be interested to know what it should be. I don't mind paying for the sheet music, but I can't preview that page to see if it's more accurate that what we already have!
13. Luthier? This is double-bass we're talking, you need a cabinet maker or boatbuilder :-)
14. This is a NL210 ? In fully working order, the best you're likely to get for it is £350 . Are you sure that the fartiness is a fault with the driver and not a cable or some piece of loose fluff resting on the cone? As it is, I don't think it's worth a great deal, because of the difficulty and cost of replacing the drivers. Replacing the drivers is difficult because they're custom 4 Ohm Eminence. EA will charge in the order of £300 for a pair of replacements. If you're lucky you might get re-cone kits and then you'd need to find someone to fit them. Deltalite II 2510s might be close, enough they're only readily available in 8Ohm and will cost you £205 for a pair from Lean. You could bung in another make of driver, but there's no guarantee that the cab is going to sound the same, or even OK.
15.
Same here but if I was local, unemployed and between bands I'd probably consider it. Beats watching TV in my pants.
Bit OT Bremen, but why do you have a TV in your pants?
16. Don't forget that it's been translated out of Italian, so it's easy to see how that could have gone wrong. It doesn't much matter whether it's 300 or 500 watts, what really makes it sound louder is having more drivers moving more air.
17. It doesn't matter whether you use two separate leads to connect the cabs, or whether you daisy chain them. The amp will see a single 4Ohm load.
18. Might be worth them talking to a drum specialist such as Soundattak http://www.soundattak.co.uk/home/default.asp . I bought a small Mapex kit from them a couple of years ago at a very good price and they were most helpful.
19.
Hate to ask, but want to be sure; so I'd need a power amp at 2ohms each side?
You need 4 Ohms each side.
20. Very nasty. I think next time I put something valuable up for sale on Basschat I'll put a watermark on the pictures, if I can figure out how to do it.
21. I can play a lot of different instruments, but I've never got anywhere with drums. It requires the kind of physical co-ordination of all 4 limbs that you've either got, or you haven't!
22.
i most certainly won't be using Parcel Monkey or Night Freight again. It seems that the former take the money from the punter and the latter does the job. Only if the latter doesn't do the job (as has happened), they're both pretty clueless, my cab's still where it was, and Parcel Monkey have still charged me for the pleasure? Come back Parcelforce, all is forgiven
Yes, I've had a bad experience when someone else used ParcelMonkey to ship something fairly valuable to me and it disappeared for 3 days, though it did eventually re-appear safe and sound. I guess if you pay peanuts you get parcelmonkeys.
