1.
Not many comments from any Irish folk band/drinking songs bass players yet?
Sorry, I was down the pub and didn't see this thread.
 2.
Walking out the pub the other night with my double bass: "That's a big guitar". How many times have I heard that.
Or "thats a big violin, can you fit it under your chin?" The polite answer: "No, I need to borrow two or three of yours"
 3.
Anyone recommend a good Manchester amp tech?
Dave Lunt in Stockport - his address is in the 'Recommended Amp Techs' sticky.
 4. Laney also make a 50W valve guitar head - that might be worth considering. It's called the LH50. Pics look nice but haven't seen one in the flesh.
 5. Very strange looking bass labelled "bruno" conqueror. I think this has to be Japanese, doesn't it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/60s-Bruno-semi-acous...=item4cf74eb151 Has a strange appeal. Probably means a trip to Specsavers is in the offing :-)
 6.
20 kg of amplifier is - well, not so much a catch as it would break your rod, more like a boat anchor.
It's a comparative lightweight at a mere 20 kg - my Burman is 35kg. Someone got a bargain, £753 quid! What was the BIN?
 7. No place in your list for Art Tatum?
 8.
Never heard Back Door - guess I need to.
We can fix that. Can you play vinyl?
 9. Back Door. Ron Aspery, Tony Hicks, and the living legend that is Colin Hodgkinson. Doddy, tell me that the bass isn't a chordal instrument, in the right hands.
 10.
Out moonlighting as a sound engineer I've got to say I've seen good, versatile functions bands die on their arses just because the audience aren't up for it.
I think it's important not to rely on the audience reaction for job satisfaction. Some gigs work amazingly well, and some gigs you have to feed off one another for your own enjoyment.
 11.
I've come to the same conclusion. Max power for minimum size. That's why the VOX looked interesting. 50-watt, all-valve, under £600. I've been slowly coming to the conclusion that what I need is either an old Hiwatt or build a 50w all-valveguitar amp kit and tweak the EQ values for bass. Firstly I need to get my SC 50PA running to see how much volume it gives.
I think you're seeking the unattainable. There's a reason why everyone got rid of their Sound City 50s and 100s as soon as they could. Decent valve amps like old Hiwatts and Burmans are going to no more portable than the AD200B because of the size of the transformers, which is what makes them sound so good in the first place. Catch 22.
 12.
On stage in front of an audience on a regular basis with a good drummer
+1. I studied music for 3 years, and got a degree in engineering ;-)
 13. JHS is probably short for John Hornby Skewes - I expect they imported it from somewhere and badged it with their own label.
 14.
True but at £899 for a new Fender USA Jazz Bass, you can't really go far wrong with that. I might have to now what with the new Fender prices
Something like this perhaps? http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedbasses.htm
 15. I have an EBS 2x12 which is an utterly brilliant cab, but it's the same size as a 4x10 so isn't going to achieve your objective of reducing the footprint.
 16.
Blimey! You get about a bit, or are there 2 Waxies Dargles about?
Probably at least three or four. This one is based in Ipswich, as am I.
 17. My 'other' band, Waxies Dargle, will be playing a fine selection of the Pogues wonderful music in the Royal Oak, Felixstowe Road, Ipswich, tonight. Be there or be somewhere else!
 18. Les Paul copy, I think this is probably Japanese but not sure what it is. It doesn't look like an Antoria copy. Shame about that bridge. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Old-Unbranded-Electr...=item20b9183b29 Does anybody know what it is?
 19. I'm pleased you got it sorted out. All that remains is to keep a close eye on the 'bay to see when it re-appears and make sure it's properly described.
 20.
I'm playing Ipswich Music Day in Christchurch Park on July 3rd with my band Millionaires by Morning, we're headlining the "Attitude" stage, you can mock me for my dull gear if you're free
Excellent - we're playing the Town 102 stage at 1.00pm so I should be able to come and have a listen. Mini-bass-bash anyone? Underline the Sky are there too - it's going to be a hench day.
 21.
That's great I wish I was nearer Have a good one!
+1. Couldn't have said it better!
 22. Today would have been Robert Johnson's 100th birthday. Even if we've never played a note of blues in our lives, the chances are very high that he influenced what we do, either directly or indirectly through the people he influenced. Respect.
 23. Thanks Lloydwt, it was a really great afternoon with some excellent bands, just a wonderful experience to be part of the day. Sorry you don't like my strings, someone else described them as 'gay' so you're not the only one!
 24. The MU is expensive if you just want instrument insurance: £165 quid assuming you're not entitled to student rates which gives you £2k of instrument insurance plus £10 Million public liability insurance and £10k personal accident insurance. I just got a quote from Musicguard for £2K instrument insurance was £65 quid, and also included £10k personal accident and £1 million public liability insurance. That extra 9 million public liability costs you around a hundred quid - how much public liability does one bass player need?
