I am totally new to bass guitars having previously been a drummer and saxophonist. I have had a long standing ambition to learn to play the bass and a friend of mine is a bass teacher. I am therefore in the market for a new guitar and I have decided upon a 5 string. I do fancy an American Fender Jazz 5 string, but availability is virtually non existent until October. I had also been looking at the Music Man Sterling 5 string, but that has a waiting time of 3 months to get the finish I want. Lastly, amplification for the bass. With me wanting a 5 string I am told that the low b string is in the region of 30 hz, so I will be needing a practice amp that will be able to handle the lower frequency. Thanks for any advice.
Seems like a lot of money to spend on an instrument when you don't actually know that you're going to stick with it. You stand to lose a serious amount on resale. I think you might be better off to check out the second-hand forums on this site and bide your time a bit - there's a lot of really good gear for sale second hand at the moment, for silly prices.
roost never had partridge transformers, they had some wound to the same specs but they wern't partridge.
This one seems to. http://www.andy-duke.co.uk/roost/sessionmasterguts.html And a quotation from Terry Bateman, who worked for Roost, on the Champ electronics site: The reason I remember this is because Roost used Partridge in the early days and changed to Electro-Voice about the time Sound City did (1975/6..??) - well Sound City were only across the town from Roost and there was a "flow" of parts to and fro between the two factories - ah what great days they were back then. I've also seen Electro-Voice transformers used in the Sterns Mullard 5-10 and 3-3 amplifier kits.

One of Brian Roost's finest by the looks of it. Some design similarities with Hiwatt and Sound City, and probably Partridge transformers. I've played through one of these and it was very very good.
I dunno, You wait all year for a Dave Pegg 62 P bass to come along and then ... Is it any wonder I didn't spot the previous thread, with a title like that? Sheesh.

Now here's something you don't see every day. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1962-FENDER-PRECISIO...=item45f2f9889b

I have a Korg G5 for sale. I bought it because I couldn't get either the Digitech BSW or the Behringer SYB-5 clone to work for me - the Behringer wouldn't track and the BSW was a great octave pedal but almost unuseable as a synth.
I'm happy to hand it off to you after I'm done, if that meets with Alex's approval. I'm often over in Bury/Newmarket, so can meet there if more convenient
OK, you're 16th on the list, so assuming that no-one else inserts their name ahead of yours in the meantime, you should get it around January/February 2011.
Cheers Alex Looking forward to trying the cab out when it gets here! On a related note, if there's anyone else in the Cambridge area who fancies meeting up at any point to have a noodle and chat about basses, then PM me! HTH, Ian
Yes, count me in. It's the closest it's likely to get to Suffolk. I waited 6 months last time after it was routed the opposite way round the country and it got recalled before it made it this far. Cambridge mini-bash?

Thanks Steve, this has really made basschatting a lot easier.

I'd always understood the 'Jazz Growl' to be what happens when you have both pickups full-on - because the pickups are out of phase this results in a mid-range scoop.
I saw Rocco Prestia playing a Precision with the PUPs reversed, that is, the top PUP (E and A strings) was closer to the bridge than the other. I assume this would make the A and E strings slightly tighter sounding whilst having the opposite effect on the D and G? Any thoughts/experience of this?
I have a BB800 with the PUP reversed and it doesn't make any appreciable difference.

Fat strings & Skinny strings & G strings........
No, and the laws of physics say otherwise. The tension increases when the length of string that is under tension is increased, not the 'speaking' length of the string. Hence string-thru-body does have a small increase in tension, and basses with separate tailpieces might also have similar.
Are you certain about this? My recollection of the laws of physics, or at least the laws of applied mechanics, is that the tension in a string depends purely upon the force applied, and is independent of the length of string. Tension is also constant when it passes over a smooth pulley, in this case the string saddle or the nut. String-through doesn't increase the tension, but it is likely to increase the downward force on the saddle because the angle of string is generally steeper with string-through. -
Any trade interest in anything I'm selling… http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=86369
No. As I said to you in PM, I am now using a Roland V-Bass and I don't need any more pedals. The only thing I'm interested in as a trade-in is a GK3-B pickup.

Very nice Aria precision copy http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-Pro-II-Primary-...=item1e5bd2503d This looks more like a '70s Precision than my CIJ 70's Precision re-issue! -
High end gear - are we kidding ourselves?
Ok I'll concede, you know what sound I like better than I do , your amp sounds better than mine at doing my sound, and your equipment is much more reliable. And your gear makes you a much better player I better start saving...............
Look on the bright side - At least you didn't ask him which compressor pedal would improve the sound of your rig the most ;-) -
Why don't you just simply mute your signal (with a tuner pedal for example) and use the same cable for all your 3 bases? Just need to unplug the bass, lay it down on the stand, pick another up and connect the jack! I used to play with 2 bases, a electric and a acoustic bass and used a Boss AB-2 to switch betwen both but the trouble you get from keeping the cables from wrapping arround themselves or even your legs simply isn't worth the trouble... and you save more battery having them disconnected (if active). As for your use of the looper i guess you'll have no problem with it. Go either way
One reason is that they don't all have 6mm jacks. It's a good point about the leads though.

I need a pedal which will allow me to select one of three basses, and turn the other two off so they don't resonate or start feeding back. THere's a mega-expensive pedal called the 'Trinity' which does this, but I'm not into spending 150 quid on a fancy switch, so I was wondering whether I could use my Double-loop bypass (which no-one seems to want to buy) like this: Bass 1 into the normal input. Loops switched out, Bass 1 out of the output. Bass 2 into the 'effects return' of one of the loops. Select the loop - output is bass 2 - no sound from bass 1 because there's nothing coming out of the 'send' . Bass 3 - ditto but into the other loop. Use the loop switch to swap between basses 2 and 3. I guess the obvious way to figure this out is to try it, but in the meantime can anyone find a reason why this won't work? I know there may be gain issues but I think it should be possible to balance the volume controls.

Gotta go - gotta go and listen to Little Stevie and his band. Stunning bass and the guy can play it too - who is he?
