But at the moment, Simon Nichol is in the band, so they do have an original member. Likewise Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior has been in and out but is currently in.

You might also find that with your car, you can put the front seat and back seats flat, load the bass in through the back door and push it forward, and then put the back seat up, so you would be able to load the bass without driving onto the road to get the passenger door open. Does the rear seat split?

You used to be able to get something called Plasti Dip for coating handles of tools. In theory it peels off and leaves the surface underneath undamaged. Not sure I'd want to try it on a bass myself. Maybe some acoustic foam tiles on the ceiling?

Also those lugs at either side are a notorious failure point.

I don't think there's any octave up. It's pitched where you would expect it to be pitched for a bass guitar. Stainless round wounds, maybe a hex core?

I think the modern steel strings don't help. When I had a Hofner bass in the '70s it had black nylon strings which were lower tension.
