  1. Being a couple of years older than @Krysbass I grew up with both systems and then worked as an engineer for a while where both systems were still in frequent use. Timber yards are the best. "I want some 4"x2" please" "No problem, 1.5 metre or 2.0 metre lengths? "I was hoping for 8 foot lengths "No problem, we can do some 100mm x 50mm!" The real bugger is not being able to buy Mint Imperials any more.
  2. I used to have a tenor banjo that weighed 12 Kg. Balance wasn't an issue.
  3. Thanks @Chimike, I'll check it out. I was thinking of maybe opening the holes out to square and putting some captive equipment rack nuts in. Edit: Actually those look just the job. Thanks for the tip.
  4. The effects loop runs at line level and is aimed at line level equipment, like rack compressors and other studio gear. Effects pedals are normally designed to run at a much lower instrument level. Some will work in a loop, many will not. Looks like you found another one that doesn't. There's probably nothing wrong with the amp. I suggest you forget using the loop and put the effect in the line between the bass and the amp, and all will continue to be well.
  5. Parcelforce Pat has just delivered a lovely old Burman 501 to the residence. Nothing to do with me, it's my eldest son who bought this on fleabay. It seems to work OK but has a couple of issues: The top of the chassis is supposed to be bolted to the top of the case. Some of the little threaded inserts which press-fit into the chassis have come loose or fallen out. I can see that at least one has been soldered in place at some point. Are there any better replacements that I should be looking for or do I attempt to re-solder the originals back in place? Secondly , there's no output from the spring reverb. Assuming that the valve is OK, are there any hints or tips to get this working again?
  6. Smoothhound is centre-positive, virtually everything else in the world is centre-negative. There's a reverse polarity adaptor, Diego make them and probably others too.
  7. Great to see they still go up to '11'.
  8. Paging Vail Johnson! Seriously though, a rack compressor could work for you, if it's just going to be always on and not used as an effect. A DBX266 new is 99 quid from various places, lesser known brands can be picked up second-hand (I have a Phonic 2-channel which I picked up for £35). The advantage is that you get really decent metering and all the controls you need to fully shape the sound. The disadvantage is that you have to know what you are doing.
  9. Distance Selling Regulations were withdrawn in June 2014, to be replaced by the Consumer Contracts regulations. These give you from the time you place the order unitl 14 days after your order is delivered to cancel the order. It seems to me that, providing Barefaced are efficient at turning around the order, under their one trial offer you are likely to have the cabs to try for a longer period than the statutory minimum, so it's not surprising to see them making a feature of it. In Barefaced's case, the offer also applies to cabs purchased direct from the factory, which you don't get from anything bought in a shop. I don't know of any other vendors or shops who exceed the statutory requirements in this way. Happy to be corrected. Disclaimer: I don't own and have never owned any Barefaced equipment, and can't be under any circumstances be described as a fanboy.
  10. Perhaps the OP's guitarist is a fan of Venom. I think the bass player (Cronos?) used a half-fretted bass, frets up to about the 10th fret.
  11. Easier said than done. Since the UK brewing deal with the brand owners Asahi expired in November last year, some supermarkets no longer stock them and bottles are getting harder to find. Asda and Tesco's no longer stock them. Flensburger might be an alternative but the bottles are smaller so I don't know whether the seals are the same size.
  12. The wiring of the OLP pickup is a bit weird - the 2 coils of the humbucker are each wired to a volume control. You'll probably end up re-wiring it or putting in a preamp.
  13. I'm using my Walkabout Scout head with a 2x12 4Ohm EBS Neo cabinet. It's impressively loud and relatively portable, and sounds great with the EQ more--or-less flat. Any decent 2x12 should work well.
  14. If someone has drawn on a whiteboard with a permanent marker, it's possible to draw over the top of it with a non-permanent whiteboard marker and then wipe the whole lot off. This might work on a lacquered or varnished piece of wood - maybe make up a test piece before trying it on the real thing?
  15. Does anyone use a nut and bolt tto fix the bass hanger to the plank, rather than a screw? It might need a bit of relief on the wall side, but with a nylock nut there would be no danger of it coming undone or pulling out.
  16. I have one identical to that on my Bass Collection fretless. Adjustment of height and intonation is as Andy says. It is possible to use it with through-body stringing or with the string anchor points on the back of the bridge, so it should retro-fit without needing any more work. I never realised until now that there was lateral adjustment, Hellzero is right about the way it works. Every day is a school day here on basschat!
  17. I'd just like to express my admiration for the mods willingness to keep this compelling thread alive despite it sailing pretty close to the wind a few times.
  18. But those local musicians will no longer be available to perform, because they will not have the revenue stream from working in Europe that allows them to be musicians. Instead, they will be picking fruit and working in care homes.
  19. Ten years might seem a short time to you, but it's more than the rest of my allotted biblical lifespan.
  20. Blimey, Herne Bay must have gone up in the world. When I was growing up in Canterbury, Herne Bay was "the place where people go to die - and then don't!"
