I need to acquire a stompbox (one of those things you er, stomp on which make a noise a bit like a bass drum if fed to a PA). What Seasick Steve calls a Mississippi Drum Machine. My plan was to build something using a cigar box, half a precision pickup I happen to have lying around, a bit of steel plate or a tin lid or something to replace the strings, and some double sided tape. Has anyone done this before, and have any suggestions or tips?

A Hofner Senator bass, £15 quid from Bell Music in Surbiton, and a Watkins Westminster 10W guitar amp from the late '50s that my old man had lying around from his failed attempt at electric mandolin.

And if all else goes wrong, play a bottom 'E' (or better still a bottom 'B') because 90% of the audience won't be able to hear it properly anyway!

If you are anywhere near Offton, @jonunders has proposed a Bass Bass (a kind of informal gathering where people get together to try out each others gear and shoot-the-stinky poo ) at the Limeburners on 2nd November. I'm assuming this is still on, although the thread has been tidied up a bit.

Mine runs quite happily off a standard 9v centre-neg daisy chain and wall wart with no isolation, so I think you need to have a look at your BDI21.

Mandolins don't have scroll heads. F5 ones don't anyway.

Fender Precision. What do I win?

Unfortunately not. Check out Morgan Monroe F4 . There's also a guitar version, T Bone Burnett was using one on Nashville.

Tuner recommendations for acoustic upright?

I have a Snark too, not great for bass guitar and utterly useless for my DB. Maybe there's something particular about my bridge, but it doesn't work that well. A TC Polyclip on the other hand is utterly brilliant. This one, if you don't need the polyphonic guitar capability: https://www.andertons.co.uk/tc-electronic-unitune-clip-tc194?lgw_code=16284-TC194&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwb3rBRDrARIsALR3XeYl0P2OzbBYR-mU0hqF9bTOhdehz0seonLLkF0h3eFPbLJsrKIXsfwaAteiEALw_wcB -
Could be a co-incidence! Whatever, I'm glad to hear that your bass has been found and hope that you are re-united soon.

I have a older dual AB looper by bright onion. It works fine and is well made, but one of the loops is labelled the wrong way. QA seems to have improved a bit since. You can use an loop rather than an AB/Y - thats essentially what the LM2 is. Just don't plug anything into the loop send.
-
Make sure you get the Bigshot I/O and not the Bigshot AB/Y (that's for switching one signal between two amps). If you don't need the gain controls, a simple AB/Y foot switch will do this. Micro mixers don't switch the unused instrument out of the signal path, so you can end up with resonance or even feedback. Another option is a lead with a Neutrik switching jack, that allows you to unplug one bass and plug in the other without getting huge 'clunk' noises out of the amp.

Peavey Milestone I think. I thought they were made in Korea - the Grinds were Vietnam. Could easily be wrong though.

The dimensions of the Mesa soft bag are 11.5" wide, 13" deep and 3" wide if that helps. Might be a bit tight front-to-back (the 13" measurement), the only way to is to try one and see.

That's the worst attempt at putting on strings I've seen yet.

Weirdly, I have no problem hearing those.

"Vocalist has no transport" ? To my old-fashioned way of thinking, a vocal-only PA (forget putting a bass drum through something like this) needs to be provided and transported by the vocalist. The singer in my old band bought a Stagepas 400 for use on her solo Karaoke-style gigs to backing tracks and with the odd acoustic guitar accompaniment. It wasn't up to the job and she eventually replaced it with a Bose L1 system. Neither would have coped with the full band. This system does have a single monitor channel, it's the row of blue knobs. Not sure why they labelled these monitor instead of aux 1 - normally on a Yamaha mixer 'monitor' does something altogether different. I think a better starting point would be one of those oblong mixer amps with 7 or 8 channels and stereo power allowing you to drive FOH and monitor speakers - these pop up from time to time, usually made by Peavey or Yamaha. No particular issue with ABS cabs but cheapo powered cabs need to be treated with respect. We had a pair of Behringer 15s, one of which got dropped, and the impact was enough to separate the heavy transformer from the lightweight circuit board that it was soldered directly to.

Tell me about Groundwound/Halfwound strings

+1 for Status. I have a medium set on my short-scale Duesenberg, very nice old-school sound but still has some definition. -
AH, of course. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm really not safe to be allowed out without a minder these days 🙂

Is there any possibility that these are real, and not fakes? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142816406026

There are some talented luthiers in the 'Build Diaries' forum who can build what you need.
